From the first time I was in there, I was spoken to with respect, treated like a knowledgeable customer instead of talked down to by someone assuming I knew nothing. This is one of the reasons I go there instead of anywhere else -- no mansplaining. Garber's is a true, old-style hardware store, with generations of family behind the counter, everything you could possibly need to fix up your house or apartment (or a promise to order it if they don't have it), and yes, even a curmudgeon or two. So what? They're not obsequious, but they are very helpful -- and busy with tradespeople, which tells you everything you need to know about how good they are.

More often than not, I find that the sales associates are not cross-trained so, if the product or solution you're looking for is not in the section they have been trained to oversee, you're left with the options of seeking out sales associates in different departments to tell your tale of woe multiple times or assume they don't carry what you need & leave.
