We were…read morehaving a fall neighborhood stroll in the Lockerbie Square district this rainy fall past weekend and popped in here to check things out. What a treasure chest! The Whispering Shelf features a fabulous assortment of stationery/ cards, gifts, books with handwritten recommendations (always a sucker for these little personal touches from a bookstore) and an expensive children's section. I was especially enamored by the children's section and display. There were several interactive elements to keep kids busy while you peruse the shelves (smart!). They offer a variety of events throughout the month for book clubs, storytime and more. Can't wait for more future visits and to do our Christmas shopping here!

There are still a lot of empty shelving and racks with the books in boxes on the floor. But I would say at least 70%-80% is back on the shelves. Because of this there is a 50% off sale on top of the current marked down discounted prices. This is a large store for a reseller and they have books for children, pre-teens, teens, young adults and the usual adult fiction sections, like mysteries, romance, science fiction, and fantasy, plus non-fiction sections like historical, science and biographies. I browsed for a long time but I didn't find anything on my lists. The store was so interesting, I just kept on browsing the shelves and racks. I saw a lot of interesting titles but by this time, it was my third bookstore of the day and I needed to depart for home. I was sad I didn't find anything because the prices were so attractive.

This is the place where you'll find some used treasures, but also new books and and some rare and collectible books. Whenever I visit a new bookstore, I gravitate to the children's section. This bookstore has lots of children's books, from picture books to graphic novels. I saw some ancient Nancy Drew novels, with original covers. I'm not a Nancy Drew head, but I can appreciate a vintage mystery collection when I see one. One of the best things about Fallen Leaf Books is that they leave (leaf?) you the eff alone. I don't remember if anyone greeted me or talked to me, and frankly, I don't care. All I need in a bookstore is books and cozy nooks and quietude, and that's what you'll find here.

What's not good is downright ridiculous. For some reason, instead of fiction having nice wide open spaces where you can peruse books and find something new, it's now mostly in an aisle just wide enough for 2 people to stand in. Imagine standing in front of a bookshelf that goes from the floor to 6-7 feet in the air. Imagine not being able to back up more than a step or two and trying to see what's on the shelf. It's not an easy feat. Meanwhile, there is a great open sea in the middle of the store that's wide open. Clearance, you'll be happy to know, now takes up the former fiction spot. So the books that are easiest to see are the ones nobody really wants. Makes perfect sense. In other ideas that clearly make perfect sense, with fewer DVDs on the shelves these days, an upper shelf that is very convenient to browse has a few titles with the cover side out. The bottom shelf, where almost no one wants to go, is still full of product. Changing something and improving it is welcome. Changing it and actively making it worse sucks. I used to spend a fair amount of time browsing. Now I hit a couple of areas and I'm done. Oh - whoever decided putting a dvd rack by the exit should not be making important decisions. Ever. Other than that, it's an ok place to shop.

It feels so intimate especially with the books laying on the shelves flat instead of standing up. This way you can read the titles easier instead of having to lean your head over to read the spines. This bookstore is well organized. Our old friend Ken said it best! The books are grouped by genre first, then alphabetical by author within the individual genre sections. I had no problem finding my favorite authors, Lee Child, Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben. For Karen Marie Moning, I had to ask, but the staff knew exactly where she was without having use a computer. She was on the very bottom and we had to get down to the floor to see her books. No wonder I couldn't find her selections. But fortunately the staff is very knowledgeable about their shop and very willing to help you. I was pressed for time so I didn't get to shop for as long as I would have liked to, but I found one gem for only $5. I had to rely on Books In Series Order dot com slash "Author's Name" instead of my usual typed lists (they were not as up to date as I would have liked). I'm near the end of reading all the Reacher novels and Harry Bosch novels have been completed. I'm beginning to buy all the Harlan Coben stand alone books I've skipped over in the past. I'm finding the newer Moning books to be very rare finds in her Fae series. I gotta come back here when I have more time. I just know there are more treasures hiding from me but I'll find them because I am determined.

I've always wanted to go, but didn't know what to expect so I waited. How silly of me! It's bright and clean and is full of books - both new and used (mostly used, of course). The prices are very fair and there were some great deals. Even new bestseller books were a dollar or more cheaper than the manufacturer price. A great deal of: - romance (historical romance paperbacks, especially) - children's books (used and new!) - westerns - Young Adult - Large Print - and basically everything you can think of! The woman worker provided great customer service - she explained how everything is set up and the multiple sales that were going on. I told her she had an adorable store and she told me it was her mother's! How awesome to have a family owned local bookstore in the neighborhood! I will definitely come back. Today I got some pirate bookmarks as a gift but there's a lot more to check out. You could be in here for hours looking at all the books.

It was also difficult to walk through the store as everything was pretty tightly packed in. The lady who checked me out was very kind. We had a brief discussion about the interview I was waiting to attend. She told me to remember to just keep breathing, which I appreciated greatly. Besides that interaction, no one else in the store talked to or approached me. It would have been nice to be welcomed in. Altogether, though, a very sweet shop ! With a ton of variety.
