Side of fade, on 3b curly hair
    Brandi B.

We had a fairly uncomfortable experience at this shop today. We came in to get a faded cut for my 6yo son who has 3b hair type. Shortly after sitting, the person in charge prompted one of the barbers to service us. During the prompt, they both used their fingers to rub the back of their other hand almost as if they were calling attention to skin. They did this while laughing and speaking in Arabic, which wasn't a good look as my son is a little brown boy (I'm biracial and his father is black). I asked the man in charge if everything was okay and probably looked a bit concerned because I was. He quickly saved face saying they were discussing how they would do my son's hair because it's curly and that the barber who would do his hair didn't know English. Again, my son's hair type is 3b, his curls & texture are like that of biracials/Dominican/arabs w curly hair, and we have no problems when getting services at Latino barber shops in the downriver area. I found it weird that they're using gestures that call attention to skin while talking about how to do his hair when they hadn't asked what style we wanted yet. The owner/supervisor asked for a reference photo & I pulled up google images of fades with more hair density at the top. The barber started work immediately and did check in to make sure the hair was our desired length. At first, my son complained about the clippers hurting. One of the men in the shop spoke up to advise that he needed to raise my son's hair with a comb to alleviate tension. Mid way through the cut, the barber stepped away from my son to talk to the other guys in the shop in Arabic, again, using his index and middle fingers to rub the back of his other hand and did it while laughing. It was odd and I think some of the other men picked up on this; they made effort to ignore whatever joke the barber was making and would only speak in English. The owner/supervisor was very friendly aside from the awkward moment between him & the barber at the beginning; and he did go out his way to make small talk, but I honestly was already uncomfortable and just trying to get by. When the cut was done, the owner entertained my son by adding some spray-in hair color for fun, which my son really enjoyed. The cut alone was $35. A part of me didn't want to leave a review because of how much effort the owner/supervisor was making to build rapport, but I feel this experience should be shared in case there's another family in a similar position as us. Again--the owner/supervisor was friendly, the cut was OK, but based on the weird moments w the barber (& even owner, in the beginning), I wouldn't recommend to POC.

Now, there's a haircut you can set your watch to.

High-quality cuts at a reasonable price, with an exacting level of precision and attention to detail. For the uninitiated, Tony C started out working at a number of barbershops before finally settling at the Monroe Barber Shop at this location at the southwest corner of Monroe and Outer Drive over 60 years ago. He eventually bought out the owner, changed the name of the shop to Tony C's Hair Styling, and the rest is history. He had developed quite a loyal following in SODA over the years, with some shop patrons having stuck by Tony for almost the entire length of his career. While I was disappointed to see him finally walk away from the business and retire, his successors have more than done justice to the legacy of this neighborhood barbershop. I visit the shop once every 2-3 weeks, and I opt for full-service treatment every time: haircut, beard trim, straight razor shave, wax, and a hot towel. After 30 minutes, I walk out feeling fully refreshed and ready to face the world. Amir not only cares about his customers, but is dedicated to his craft and takes great pride in what he does. My wife agrees: she has told me on multiple occasions that since I've started going to see Amir, my hair has never looked better. In choosing to keep the name, Amir honors the legacy of Tony C's, and continues the tradition of providing excellent men's hair care to SODA residents at an affordable price point. On a side note, I would also like to applaud the shop for respecting their customers' safety by enforcing the mask order during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

    Before and after!

I was ok with the cost because I've already explained how the girls had a bad experience with hair cuts overseas. After the employees said it would cost $25 each, the owner decided it would be $40 each because their hair is long and thick. Which was fine by me if the job got done as it should. Only to find out After going home that my daughter who was supposed to have a v shaped layered hair cut, has now very unsymmetrical layers, her hair is a zig zag, line over her back. And the second daughter's hair was barely touched, with some left short and some left too long. So disappointing. Sorry Fatima but you failed me. Never again.

From the color, to the blend, to the root smudge and don't even get me started on the over bleaching and lightening my ends when it wasn't needed.. it's just all awful. I've spent hundreds going to other stylists to try and fix my hair, when instead my hair was already so damaged I had to chop it all off and start growing my hair out all over again. I only can speak for myself and my experience, but there's SO much more out there if you do proper research.
