It shouldn't come as a surprise that they've been open over 40 years at this location. Apparently, they were going to have to close the doors for good not long ago, but they found how long time owner of The business next-door who decided to buy the place. It definitely does feel like a neighborhood Barber Shop. But, enough about the architecture in the history: let's talk about the haircut. The cut I got was exactly what I wanted, and it only cost $13 (she did such a good job and I gave her a tip to make it $20, and that's still a lot cheaper than you'd pay anywhere else). When I was there, there was a guy with his dog; the dog sensed that I had dogs, and jumped in my lap. Yes, it's that kind of laid-back place where everybody's a friend, and where they don't seem to mind adding you to the list of friends. And, of course, they do a bang up job with haircuts, for a very reasonable price.

The worst experience I have ever had at any place. I'm new to Inkster and I was looking to find a…read morepermanent barber while I live in Inkster. My first mistake was stopping here at this barbershop. Firstly, I walked in and spoke to the three barbers that were on duty. Three light skinned black men. One older with light eyes, the other had a bald head and the other wore braces and he was lighter skinned of the three. And after speaking they were all very non chalant(like whatever hey). I sat down and waited because all three barbers chairs were occupied and there was a bit of a wait. Ok, the bald barber approaches me and says, "I have a couple a people ahead of, so it's going be a minute, but not long" my response to that was, "do you think you'll be done around 2:30 I have to be at a funeral at 3:00(the current time was about 1:45 roughly). Bald barber says, I don't know how long I'll be just like if you say in my chair I won't know how long it is. Hmmm.... If you're a professional you'll know roughly when you'll be done with a customer based on their hair lenght head size and style request. I said ok I understand and he went about his barber business. About 10 minutes pass and the lighter skinned black man with the braces signals and tells me that it's my turn. Ok! I sit in his chair and he says "bald fade" I say "yes". The last time I got a bald fade was two Fridays ago. It's saturday. Then my barber proceeds to ask "do you want me to trim the top a little?" Red flag red flag!!!! If I said yes to a bald fade.... Give me a bald fade. Standard bald fade!!! So I didnt trust the barber at the point and I asked him just to do the face. With one of the most smug expressions and sarcastic undertone he says, "why you change yo mind quick like that?" My real reason was because you don't know how to bald fade a black man and you're a black man. But I just said do the face. He didn't do that right. I go to stand up and look in the mirror, my barber literally nudges me back into my seat and said "you don't have to do all that I'll give you a mirror" all while looking at the older black light skinned man with the lighter eyes. So I told him just to stop I'm good. Then I asked my barber for the clippers to touch-up what he apparently does not know how to do. He says, "tell me what's wrong, because you not touching my clippers". I said ok then I asked the older light eyes barber very respectfully because I respect my elders for his help and he rudely told me "you can tell him what you need done hell fix it". Man when I tell you I wanted to do more than write this review. I'm a man at the end of the day like those men in that Barber shop. And the level of disrespect that I received from these black men in a black barber shop was mind blowing. I really wanted to fight, but I'm grown with kids. If one of y'all barbers are reading this, the level of disrespect from one man to another without being disrespected is sickening. Grow up!

My first visit to this barbershop was better than I expected. Lashell took her time and gave my…read morehair a careful, detailed cut that matched exactly what I was hoping for. I was pleasantly surprised to get a hair wash and a hot towel massage as part of the service. The regular price is on the higher side at $29 plus tip, but with the quality of the cut -- and the compliments I've gotten -- it felt worth it. I usually go to another barbershop that charges $20 plus tip. It's a quick in‑and‑out cut, and sometimes a lazy or incompetent barber does a questionable job. No wash, no hot towel, no neck shave. For the price, it's probably fair. As a fixed‑income retiree, I'll likely continue using the less expensive barbershop for routine cuts, but I can definitely see myself coming back to Hair Mechanix every few months to treat myself. Sometimes it's worth paying a little more for genuinely good service.
