The new owner has given this place a new life! She works so hard and cares so much. I never go wrong with a special here! Take-out service keeps this place busy. But a sit-down meal of grilled or baked seafood is delicious with a glass of Portuguese wine. Not entirely thrilled unfortunately today. Went to T&P's around 2:00pm today after a trip to the zoo as my daughter wanted pasta. We were one of six tables within the facility that were occupied. Our server came over and greeted us after about five minutes of sitting, so we'd already knew what we wanted to order. We placed our order and waited about 37 minutes for the food to come out. During the time we waited, all the table next to us did was complain. They complained the music was too loud, they complained the service wasn't fast enough, and then when they got their check to pay, the server accidentally placed the itemized receipt of another table on their table. Good lord, that caused the man to absolutely flip out. Very loudly he goes "ARE YOU KIDDING, CANT THEY DO ANYTHING RIGHT?" which was so very offputting. He flagged the server down who apologized tenfold. Our food came out, it looked...well..you can see from the pictures. The mushrooms and calamari were just disappointing. The mushrooms were very dry and could have used a lemon wedge, if not some kind of sauce. The calamari I had specifically ordered because it was named "Calamari RINGS Rhode Island Style" but when it came out, the plate was full of the body/tentacle style which I do not eat. The breading was also not crispy in the least, it was soft and soggy. Calamari should have that crunch to offset the seafood. The marinara was also very watery. My daughter (8) thought her pasta was okay, she didn't touch the meatballs but we took her leftovers home. This was the first time I'd been to Tony and Penny's in over a dozen years. The service was ok. We ordered drinks at the shift change. Our 2nd waitress brought in her 2 children with what appeared to be a happy meal and sat them at the table behind us. eventually their grandmother(?) came in and had a drink and dinner with them. We waited more than a half hour to get out meals. I had the stuffed shrimp. The stuffing was like paste, and detracted from unspiced shrimp. The mixed vegetables were cold (I'm guessing came frozen) and butter was added so what I had was cold vegetables with water and butter. The roasted potatoes were ok but were luke warm. The salad was a small portion of iceberg with a taint of romaine, small wedge of tomato and two slices of cucumber. Overall - less than meh. My wife had chicken parm - overcooked pasta and enough cheese for three people. Service was ok considering the waitress worked the bar room and the seperate dining room. read more

Let me preface with they were short staffed... Stumbled upon this place. When we walked in we were a little confused on where to seat as they had a banquet going on. When we got to the correct seating area it took awhile for us to get someone to greet us and get us menus, we would have gone somewhere else had more places been open. However, when we got our food the portions were huge... like you could have a solid 2-3 meals from one plate and the prices are beyond reasonable. I hate to do this to what seems like a charming local-friendly place but I'm honestly not impressed. We arrived at 6:00 with a reservation for 6:15. They did not have a table saved for us, so we could've waited for a table or sit at the bar. We opted for the bar since we had somewhere to be after dinner, so we figured faster was better. Unfortunately, we didn't get served drinks until 6:20. Then when they came back for our order, the food took an additional 30-35 minutes to arrive, which means we had just been waiting over an hour. When the food came out, I would say it was mediocre at best. Oh, and I almost fell out of my chair on the way out. I'll say this seems to be a very friendly local place, but if you're just visiting...better to find somewhere else. read more

Not an authentic Portuguese restaurant it's more "Americanized" a feel of some Italian on the menu as well. For an app the flaming sausage is a must, slightly hot (spicy) and a really good char! I got the home style shrimp dish and my partner he got the alentajana. Really good portions and good amount of flavor classic Portuguese favorites. Downfall is the bar is okay you definitely only go for beer or wine because the espresso martini and cosmo we ordered were not worth drinking! The quality of food has gone down hill significantly. Ordered 3 meals and an appetizer tonight for takeout . Was told it was an hour wait, which was acceptable. The bifana grinder was inedible as a grinder, the top of the bread was rock hard. The portion of pork was small and there was a scant amount of gravy with the onions. Fish and roasted potatoes was decent. Rice was bland. Thankfully we ordered the spicy shrimp appetizer which came with the gravy to enhance the tasteless rice. The Bacalhau dinner was the complete opposite of what I ordered. All in all, this is the third time I have been less than pleased. I don't think I will go back again. Years ago it was top notch. They seem to not care about their food quality any more. About a year ago they gave me fish that smelled beyond spoiled. I was excited to see swordfish on the menu. However, the swordfish was a major disappointment! Not only was it not fresh but it was very over cooked and tough. Because it was the main course, I can only give 2 stars. I noticed the table next to us was struggling to cut into their chicken. Veggies and boiled potatoes were good. Starter salad was tiny. We recently had our 45 class reunion here. The service and food were wonderful. Salad soup Portuguese rolls excellent. Food served family style was very nice, no standing in line for buffet. Chicken with sauce, baked fish and mixed vegetables were very good. Dessert was carrot cakes or apple pie. Coffee. A very enjoyable evening. We've been to the restaurant side many times and always enjoyed the food. Often gotten a bifano sandwich or roasted chicken and potatoes to go. My parents had their wedding reception here 70 years ago when it was a hall. Then 40 years anniversary also here. We've been to many meals here following a funeral. On the way out we met the lovely new owner. Wishing her continued success. Needless to say I would keep Tony and Penny's in mind for your go to venue. Easy parking. Great service and food. They NEVER disappoint!! My daughter got married today and Tony & Pennie's catered the event. The staff was friendly, polite, on time, (if not a few minutes early) smiling. Weddings are a a stressful time. So to watch the staff work and not have to worry. Can't ask for more than that. When the kids told me who was catering, they asked if I wanted to know if I wanted to see the menu they chose. I said "no thank you" my daughter asked why. My reply was "you can NOT go wrong with Tony & Pennie's, I would eat there anyway, any dish they are amazing" We had buffet style. There was more than enough food. And it was DEE-LISH!! Everything, amazing!! Our guests were so impressed with the food, can't thank you enough for being you!! Food pick up was right on time and again, smiling, pleasant, courteous, hard workers, I witnessed a guest interact with one of the workers. So pleasant!! I went after a funeral and didn't have high expectations because when is after funeral food something you think about being great right.. The food was fantastic! The Fish -fish was awesome at this event. The salad was fresh and not just lettuce, t he veggies were crisp and bright, the other dishes were also fabulous but I was blown away and the fish being so good cooked in bulk. The service was fantastic. The room was nice for the event as well. I was pleasantly shocked at how great it was there. I absolutely LOVE this establishment! Not only do they serve a spectacular meal, they also go above and beyond for their clientele. My grandmother turned 100 a couple weeks ago and unfortunately due to COVID I am unable to travel to MA and she is unable to leave her assisted living residence. When I called to place an order to go I asked if there was a nearby service that would deliver to my grandmother. The woman I spoke to on the phone said THEY would be delighted to deliver this special meal to her! I couldn't believe it! My grandmother was in tears when she saw the feast that was prepared for her. I have eaten there twice myself, always great food and friendly service. This gesture however will stick with me for life! It really goes to show the importance of small businesses during these crazy times and the the extra steps they take to make their customers happy. I don't know why this place is considered Portugeuse besides a small portion of the menu with some port. dishes. This honestly detered me - it should be advertised as a seafood place. We were BLOWN away by a random location in a random location. Actually got right in on a Fri night but they recommend reservations. The waitress was AMAZING. SUPER knowledgable, funny, and efficient. When you get there they ask what type of bread you want and they bake it there... or maybe they just heat it but we got wheat and onion - 2 diff kinds. HOLY AMAZING. This bread is soooo fresh and soft and melts in your mouth! Steaming hot out of the oven too. We ordered a pitcher of sangria which wasn't that good after the bartender (also very nice) mentioned it's made w/ apple juice... that was all I could taste once I knew. But it was strong and yummy nonetheless. For my entree I had a salmon salad which was a very generous portion and for NINE DOLLARS.... really shocked by the amazing deal on a HUGE piece of salmon. Any chain restaurant would have cost $14-16. My husband got the stuffed lobster which was pretty good and equally as good of a deal. Mashed and gravy was so-so... kind of box-tasting. Calamari app was fresh and good. Ribe eye was HUGGGE and the whole table raved about it (I never tried it). Oh AND you get a side salad that's also huge with every entree. Wonderful option for very large groups, With options for fresh meats, salads, and soups. I came for a banquet and loved the fresh fish, Along with every other single dish. My family organized a banquet here recently and we loved the spread that was laid out for us. The Arroz Con Pollo was hot and cheesy. I went back for seconds...and thirds. The fried fish was perfectly battered and ridiculously fresh. The Portuguese rolls were HUGE! The roast beef was tender with a great au jus sauce. We ordered a few drinks and the bartender was a nice guy. Beer selection was pretty bad in the banquet hall since I hate American macrobrews, but they had some draft beers in the regular bar so maybe the beer selection was better out there. My brother missed out on cheesecake (there seemed to be a shortage). However, when one of the servers heard about this she had a piece prepared especially for him. Talk about service! Plenty of parking and plenty of room inside no matter how large your group is. And the food is excellent, which is what matters when the rubber hits the road. read more

We were a party of 8 at the restaurant last night. We ordered 8 main dishes. Some scallops, surf & turf and baked seafood. The food was very good but the service was flat out terrible. Once she knew there weren't any liquor sales at our table she put us on her low priority list. There were 2 tables that came in after us (one of 4 and one of 8) both having liquor sales that had their meals delivered long before we received ours after ordering much earlier than them. Patrons shouldn't be penalized with poor service due to no liquor sales. We had to ask for bread, water, etc. The waitress never came back to check on how our meal was, drink refills, etc. We have been to the restaurant multiple times and enjoyed our meal and service. This was by far a terrible experience and we aren't sure if we will be back. read more

We went there wendsday evening about sixthirty,it wasn't crowded but yet no one greeted us or showed us where to sit.We took it upon ourselves to find a table then waited f or ten minutes to get a drink and another ten minutes to order our food.Then it went down hill from there.It took 55 minutes to get our food and when we did get our food it wasn't even hot,just warm.It seems that the staff takes care of the regulars first as many people were served there meal prior to our party getting ours.First time there but may not return as it wasn't a good experience for us.Not recomended read more

Went on a Monday so maybe that was the reason for the bad food. They have three specials each day. Monday one of the specials was Boston Baked Scrod. The fish was way over done. So far over done the topping was hard. The fish sat in more watrer than it swam in orginally. The topping and fish had no flavor. The french fries were on ly hafl cooked. Mentioned to server after meal was over, never checked on meal when we were eating, offered to comp dessert, refused it I just want my meal to be good. When I can make better fish and french fries at home then the restaurant has no excuse for serving food like this way. read more

We recently (July 2010) went to Tony and Penny's as part of an event and were blown away by both the food and the service. We have eaten at all major restaurants, both casual and fine dining, and are very picky. (I would classify Tony & Penny's as a fine family restaurant; nice but not formal so relaxed, comfortable atmosphere; lovely for a date and enjoyable as a family) As an example, we have been disappointed by both RuthChris Steakhouse and Morton's, both of which we paid hundreds for in which to dine. The filet I had at T&P blew away anything we had ever tried before; first of all, it was enormous! Secondly, but more importantly, it was seasoned and cooked to perfection! It was melt in your mouth! After traveling around the country trying various steakhouses in Boston,Hartford,Charlotte, etc. it was a shock and surprise to find the best steak we have ever eaten right on our own backyard. Compliments to the chef! Lastly, the charge was extremely fair, about $20. I would have paid three times that amount,as I have other places and have never felt it warranted; this was the only $60 steak I would consider worth it, but considering they only charged about $20, I was the winner here. What a value! It was the best steak I ever had in my life. They are a nice family restaurant that is fair and not looking to rip people off. My husband had the grilled salmon and again, perfection! Portion size and grilling technique. Our son had the green bean soup, a specialty, (along with their kale soup) and NY strip, both excellent. The sides are all homemade and fresh and delicious. The Roast potatoes are a specialty, be sure to try those. We topped it all off w/desserts that are about half the price of other places with a greater variety (Grand slam pie, Creme brulee, Strawberry shortcake, which had the freshest strawberries I had ever eaten at a restaurant). We were stuffed and satisfied! Best of all the waitstaff was extremely attentive and solicitous. Water was refreshed constantly, fresh, piping hot bread refilled, etc. They were dealing with a larger group w/us (altho we ordered a la carte off the regular restaurant menu so it wasn't a banquet function, tho I have been to those here as well and those are equally well regarded about town) and were friendly and efficient, never distracting or intrusive. I cannot say enough about our recent experience w/Tony and Penny's and how it blew away even the "fine dining" alternatives in Boston and Hartford we have tried. We were very pleased and will be making it a regular stop from now on and will be reccomending it to everyone with enthusiasm. Check their website for their extensive offerings, everything our group had, which varied across the menu from steaks to salmon to fishbowl and Portuguese specialties, was a hit. This chef/family/cooking crew (not sure how many are in the kitchen; side dishes are equally well prepared and delicious as main entrees) is tops, they master across the board. I have only had the takeout from here (party platters) and I am quite pleased. The seafood rice is unbelievable. Succulent shrimp, fresh large tender melt-in-your-mouth scallops, tasty littleneck clams, and luscious lobsters. It has a delicious sauce from all the shellfish, but does not smell or taste fishy. Also, the roasted chicken is extremely juicy and flavorful. The codfish cakes are crunchy-fried on the outside, with semi moist cod inside, very good. And the oven roasted potatoes are delicious. I am not a huge seafood person, but everything was so good that I went back for 2 extra servings! Viva Portugal !! read more
