Chaves is a hidden gem that I wish I discovered sooner. Apparently it's not a secret to all, as they were packed last Sunday afternoon. My husband and I went to Chaves in search of the francesinha sandwich we fell in love with in Portugal. Chaves Restaurant's version was incredible and authentic. It had all the meats, the cheese, the sauce, egg...and it came with fries, but we ordered Portuguese style chips instead. They were excellent as well. While the sandwiches were huge and filling, we wanted to try an app as well, so we ordered some cod and shrimp croquettes. They were great. We caught a glance of dessert at the next table and decided we were going to get that to go. We got 2 slices of "grandma cake", one vanilla and one chocolate. They were biscuit cookies layered with a rich cream. Both were delectable. Chaves has a large menu and daily specials. The service is friendly and they don't rush you. We can't wait to go back and bring friends. The food is wonderful!!

We were so excited but cautiously optimistic when venturing to Chaves. Being Portuguese and having grown up with some of the best Portuguese food in NJ we have been less than impressed with some of the Portuguese restaurants in CT. However, Chaves ranks in our top three Portuguese restaurants in Connecticut so far. It's a small place and it feels like you're going to your relatives house and I love how all the locals just seem to know each other. Overall, the food was fantastic some of the best sauces and the most unique chorizo dish I've had -- more so because of the way the scoured the meat -- check out the picture. Our entrées were also fantastic. What could be better: Caldo Verde soup. It was way too thick and maybe this is personal preference bc we make it at home. But the one thing that I found pretty offensive was there sangria. It is not a proper sangria. It is basically cheap wine with fruit. There was no alcohol in it. A traditional sangria usually has brandy maybe some orangejuice or orange liqueur and sometimes a little bit of seltzer this was not that at all, and I couldn't even drink it. The waitress confirmed that they prepare it in batches but really it was a bottle of wine and if I'm wrong, I'd love to have a discussion about it. For a traditional Portuguese restaurant this was highly disappointing. For that, I'm taking away one star and will say that this restaurant is a Connecticut four - I can always order wine instead to make up for it. Other than that we look forward to returning. It was our 1st time here and the waiter did a great job of explaining how everything works and how the food will be served. We got the full experience. The salad bar has waaayyyy more than just salad but don't get caught up there bc when they start bringing the food/meats to your table you might be a little overwhelmed. I tried everything lol. I had a lamb chop for the 1st time it was amazingly delicious. Flank steak might be new favorite cut. Filet mignon wrapped with bacon. They just keep bringing food to you like you're a "King" or "Queen"!! There was the grilled pineapple and they also had this honey cheese. I'm getting hungry and having flashbacks as aim writing. I can't wait to go back. It's a very nice intimate setting with music playing but just loud enough to hear and still have a conversation. I will definitely be back soon. It's so much more I can say but I think you have to just experience it for yourself. Also remember this all you can eat so bring your appetite. Next time I'll add more pics. Had to enjoy the moment!!

There are tables but the spot in general is no-frills. I got the yellow rice and peas, black beans, Maduros, Pernil, and steak. Everything was great but I wasn't a fan of the maduros. There's a bunch of buffett tables with hot and cold dishes. You get a tin carry-out container, you fill it with what you want, then head to the spits to get your meats. The guys behind the counter will take out the meat you want and will carve you however much you would like. They charge by the pound, you weigh your foods then pay at the counter. It's very much like a buffett in terms of the ring out process. The foods fresh, tasty, and abundant. They are not labeled well, so some things are guesswork as to what you get. But although you can't identify some things, it's going to taste good. Price is reasonable for the portions. It's not pretty, but it's tasty

Their lineup offers nine entrees served with two sides ($12-$19) and eight solo sides ($6-$7). The entrees are three kabob plates (Churrasquinho) with a half pound of chicken, pork or beef and two sides, steak, salmon or stew specialties, and two vegetarian options. I wanted to try their Feijoada ($15) "The Most Popular Brazilian Dish" - an enticing stew of black beans, sausage, bacon, beef, rice, plantains and kale. But it wasn't available right away and I didn't want to wait 20 minutes for it to get cooked up. Instead, I went for an order of Churrasquinho with Chicken and sides of Kale and Yucca fries for $16. It was delicious!! Everything on the plate was delicious. The grilled chicken was tender and flavorful with nice grill marks. It was stellar. The Yucca fries were very good too, yes, they tasted a lot like French Fries, but the texture and taste were slightly different. And the kale surprised me a lot -it was soft and tender and delicious, nothing like the cardboard or Styrofoam-like kale I had experience with. The crowning glory of my lunch came when the cook asked "Do you want some of our hot sauce?" Of course I did, and he handed me a quarter cup plastic container of beige/orange sauce. Prepare yourself before you try it because it is nuclear! Of course I loved it. I also liked the way the owner walked over during my meal and asked how I liked it. We exchanged some banter about his hot sauce! The Gulla Grille was a hit for me.
