The atmosphere seemed like something you would find at your local Cheesecake Factory. They turn over tables fast, it's a large restaurant, and it's definitely not an Italian family working the restaurant. Service is stretched and you will hear perfect English spoken. This restaurant was recommended by a local. The location is in the middle of "restaurant row" . We had a reservation and were seated fairly quickly. There was a line at 7pm. Food was good. This was hands down one of the worst restaurants I visited in Italy... I was on a family vacation when we decided to head to Trastevere (a neighborhood in Rome) for dinner. We eventually came across Tonnarello, and it was very crowded--which made me think it must be amazing. We asked if we could get a table for four outside, and the waitress told us to wait in line. The line wrapped around the corner of the building and practically disappeared into the crowd, so it was hard to even find. We ended up waiting outside for 30-40 minutes, just standing there. But we figured, hey, if it's this popular and we've waited this long, it's gotta be worth it. Eventually, our table was ready. But instead of being seated outside like we requested, the waitress led us inside--after 40 minutes of waiting specifically for an outdoor table. At that point, we were already disappointed. To make things worse, the guy sitting behind us was the LOUDEST HUMAN BEING ON EARTH. I'm not exaggerating. His normal speaking voice was a full-volume yell, and his actual yelling? Pure torture. I genuinely thought my eardrum might rupture. And his laugh? It still haunts me. We sat at our table for about 20 minutes before a waitress finally came to take our order. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. I got the Cacio e Pepe--which the waitress said was their highest-rated pasta. It was... average. Definitely not worth the wait or the chaos. The restaurant has several dining areas, an upstairs room, 1st floor dining in a bar area/dining area and outside dining as well. Since it was extremely hot the most comfortable dining was outside with a nice breeze. The star of the show was the food. We were seeing the size of the portions being served so we decided to split an appetizer and a pasta dish. We had the fried calamari which was absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly. For the shared entree we had the Tonnarello Al sugo con la polpette. The freshly made pasta had to be the best pasta I have had so far. The food was simple but yet elevated. We walked by T's several times during lunch & dinner time, and it was always packed. Its located in Trastevere, on the corner of Piazelle di Santa Maria. There is seating inside, adjacent and across the narrow cobblestone street next to the cathedral. T's serves traditional Roman food, and has been open since 1876. We started off w/ the carciofi alla giudia, but ordered something besides pizza or pasta for our mains. ITC ordered polpete alla vaccinara, while I had salmon. First of all, the carciofi was the best version of this classic Roman dish we had during our stay in Rome. All of the inedible part was neatly trimmed away, and we enjoyed the sweet artichoke heart the way it is meant to be. Secondarily, my salmon was super fresh, and the overall plate was a big portion. It was a nice change of pace fr all the pizza & pasta we had been eating in Rome & Tivoli. Lastly, ITC's polpette were outstanding. There was a piece of oxtail stuffed inside the meatball, and there was tender oxtail in the sauce. In addition, the plate was very large w/ the sides. Regarding the ambiance, the inside is two story and contains the pipi room - LOL. We dined al fresco and it was great for people watching. There were many locals, and a lot of effin American tourists who seemed to overrun Italy during my trip. The service was fantastic. Our waiter was super nice and attentive. He jokingly said I sounded like a local bc we both ordered in Italian. The food came out quickly, and it was nice to enjoy my Americano on a hot day. If you go to Rome, T's is a must visit for awesome Roman food. Go early during lunch or dinner, or prenote for dinner (make a res), so you don't have to wait a long time. read more

Discovered this gem walking through the Trastevere neighborhood on a Saturday. The entire area was busy with pedestrians and this restaurant was no exception. What attracted me? The menu board listed "spaghetti and meatballs" the first time I had seen that offered in the three weeks I had been traveling. I'm a big fan of meatballs, make them often at home and am always looking to compare restaurant styles and ingredients to my own, to see if I can learn something I can improve on. These were good, not heavily spiced, kinda small, but in a tasty red gravy. The pasta was done perfectly, of course. Our fluent English-speaking waiter made the day pleasant, despite being slammed with work. He paid enough attention to get drinks flowing, good explanations of menu offerings, and prompt responses to the slightest requests. FInished our meal, rarely have dessert, but a flavorful frozen concoction covered in nuts caught my eye. It was superb. I only take exception to one incident. In a "tipless society" he wanted to make sure what we understood if we tipped on a card, the management would take half, so we should tip in cash. He said this to all the tables within earshot. In a "tipless society" I left ten percent. Under my coffee cup saucer. We had barely stood to leave when he scoured the table, pushing aside placemats, flatware, cups looking for the money.
