This shop is run down. I honestly feel so saddened by the lack of care for the fish. I would not be surprised if purchased fish came with any infection or parasites. There are tanks with dead fish and there are tanks with huge fish in small tanks.. examples are 8in fat fish in a 20 gallon tank. No room to swim and looked very stressed. I bought some fish because I felt so sad. This location also smells like weed nothing wrong with that however not family friendly due to that. The store is very dark hard to see some fish there for hard to see if their sick or have a parasite. I would strongly suggest a whole new management and lots of improvements to better care for the stock read more

It's a generic fish store but I personally have two problems with this place which is why I'm giving them one star and I will not be going back. Upon walking in, I immediately smelled weed which is a huge problem for me because the smell of weed really bothers me and makes me gag. So either one of their employees likes to smoke weed during their down time and forget that they smell like weed when they come back to work, OR the employees all like to smoke weed in the back of the store. Either way, bad smell right as you walk in which made the visit unpleasant. While they do have a large selection of fish to choose from, all of the tanks looked dirty and the water looked bad. There's old, white water stains on the outside of the tanks and on the inside of the tanks the water looks foggy/dark which all make it hard to look closely at the fish for health and color. I personally WILL NOT go back to this store. read more

I moved out here to about 7 months ago! Been to a few different fish stores and all was pretty much the same. Your usual African cichlids, goldfish, discuss, betas, and plecos. But after walking into this shop I was greeted by Ty, which was very helpful and knowledgeable! I purchased a nice 3Inch SRD flowerhorn from him at such a good price it was hard to say no! I highly recommend this shop if you're lookin to get a tank started or just want something out of the ordinary that other fish stores don't carry. It's alright, nothing special about this place. Good place to go when other shops are closed. Went there a few times and thought I was in the liquor store or a bar. First time there customer service was good, second time it was alright, 3 time cold shoulder. However I bought a few stuff there and after that I stopped going. I went to that store in the early 90s and the old gentleman that ran the shop was more helpful and respectful and had more product to sell. I hope they clean up and give us fish keepers a wow when we walk in the store instead of a empty looking store. read more

First went to Tom's when I just started in this aquarist game and I couldn't really appreciate all they had to offer. Now that's it's been a good amount of time I can really give a good evaluation. This spot is definitely a hidden gem. Not in the greatest of strip malls but that has never deterred me from checking out a fish store. When you walk in and make a left you encounter a huge room wrapped with tanks with them going down the middle as well. The neat thing about this place is they have fish that are small and also grown for you fish lovers with more mature tanks. They also sell rare fish you won't find elsewhere such as Pikes, grown Arowanas, Sharks and Rhino fish. They also had one of the healthiest tanks of about 40 tiger barbs that I have seen in any store. The owner is related to the owner's of Tiki's in Bellflower and P&P in Cypress and are always willing to cut deals. Especially on items in the front of the store where are of their supplies and dry goods are. This place is definitely geared toward the more advanced hobbyist but have a little something for everyone. read more

Really good selection of tropical fish. It might not look like a great store from the outside, but it's pretty well stocked. You can strike good deals with them... no tax if paid in cash, two of the same type of fish for a lower price, etc. I was a bit intimidated by the location, but it was a pretty cool visit. I was pleasantly surprised by the deals I was able to get just by talking to the young guy working there. read more

I went to "Tom's tropical fish" on Sunday June 14, 2009. The store was a bit larger than average, and they did seem to have quite a large variety of fish to choose from, both large and small fresh water fish and an equal selection of marine fish, They seemed to have an interesting mix of some unusual fish as well, (they do advertise "import from around the world") and they had a good quantity of them, they also had plenty of the standard fish store fare such as tanks, plastic plants, little plastic bubbly toys, larger rocks and pieces of river wood for tankscaping. They also had two tortoises and a rather large Gecko, mice and hamsters, as well as some birds, cages and other pet supplies. Unfortunately, today I feel I have to give a far less than stellar review. The large store was way over packed with merchandise, the isles were very small and in some cases stacked well over my 6 foot height, I found many products on the shelves that had obviously not been cleaned or dusted in years, and while they did have lots of fish and a variety of them, their tanks were dirty and not well maintained, many of the fish were not healthy, in fact I saw at least four dead fish in the tanks and several with on going parasite issues, one had a hole eaten though it's side! Further most of the tanks had several types of fish in each tank and they were very poorly marked as to type of fish and price of fish. Lastly while it's not unusual for tropical fish stores to be a bit hot and humid Tom's was overly so. Finally I believe Tom's could do far more to present a clean, inviting and comfortable retail experience for their customers. In short I am sorry to say that I could NOT recommend Tom's Tropical Fish as a good place to get tropical / marine fish, fish supplies or other pet supplies. I ended up here to get live bloodworms since they're a little hard to find. I must say I wish the Parakeets were kept in better conditions. They didn't have any toys or stimulation. They seemed really sad and bored. It was just a cage and 2 perches. The employee that helped me was really nice and friendly and we chatted a little. I did mention to him that the birds need toys. I have a Green Cheek Conure and I know how much attention birds need. He assured me they get sold so quickly they're hardly there at all, but even a few days of that would make my GCC depressed. Wouldn't hurt to give them a better quality of life, even if they do sell fast. Or maybe stick to fish. Birds really shouldn't be second-thought type pets. I hope they go out and get some toys and treats for these birds if they continue to sell them. read more

This is one of the best fish stores. The owners are cool guys and they always hook me up with a discount even without me asking for one. (If they know you, they'll hook you up too.) I like this place because it's one of the best places to find harder to find fish that only hardcore fishkeepers like myself like. They have a good selection of bichirs and arowanas (saw a couple black aros there before), and will have fish like flagtails, datnoids (saw a new guinea one there before) and even lungfish. It depends on the season though, and they won't have all the HTF fish all at once, but it's still better than 90% of the other fish stores. I like that they sell big sized fish and not just the small, cute kind of ones like Petsmart has. This store is for real fishkeepers with the 100-200 gallon tanks who know what they're doing. It's a little dark in there and in the ghettos of Long Beach so watch out for that. Otherwise, this store is top notch. read more

Great place to buy fresh water fish. Everybody who works here is helpful and knowledgable. I've visited other fish stores but so far this is my favorite one. The quality of the fish here is GREAT, they are always healthy and they will not sell you the fish if they are ill. Although this place is a little cramped and a bit smelly, it's a sign that it's a good pet store. Prices are cheap and pets are plenty. You could sometimes haggle them for a better price. Being from North Long Beach ive tried numerous fish stores in the greater LA area and have not found one that even comes close to Tom's. The staff is friendly and helpfull and is always ready to help. Ive always come out happy and satisfied. I have been coming here for many years and the selection of rare fish always amazes me. On my latest visit I got lucky and scored a healthy and rare Korean Perch. There are many common species of fish as well. I would recommend this place to anyone from beginner to advance aquarists. There are many common and hardy species for those who just want a simple setup in their living room. Yes this place is ghetto and not as appealing to the eye in terms of cleanliness but the most important thing to me is that they have fish no one else does and at really good prices. They're also willing to bargain which is also a plus. I've been going here since I remember back when my grandpa took me with him 25 years ago when I was 3-4 years old to buy feeders for his fish and it's pretty much the same. LOL I give five stars because I've been to countless shops in the South Bay/LB/north OC areas and nothing compares in terms of prices and selection of fish. read more
