Have only gone here for the past couple of years to buy various kinds of fish but after the last experience we won't be returning. Clearly asked for clarification on whether specific kinds of fishes could mix with each other and someone who claimed to be the owner's brother said yes. Later on we realized that one of the fishes literally bullied and chased down the others so bad that one of them ending up dying. We had to separate them after realizing. Went back to the store to address our concerns and was met with hostility and attitude, stating he never said that. Hooting and hollering the whole time. But the fact is we wouldn't have purchased the different fish had we known they wouldn't get along. But I guess the store desperately needed our money. Mind you, we approached him kindly. I've given this store multiple chances, but the customer service has been consistently rude. The older Asian gentleman has been unpleasant every time I've visited. On my first visit to buy salt, I was told I couldn't use my card because I didn't meet the minimum purchase amount and was told to go dig around my car for quarters. Today, I stopped by to look at the fish before buying supplies, and after spending a few minutes browsing, he abruptly yelled, "Can I help you?!" in an irritated tone, as if customers aren't welcome unless they're immediately making a purchase. Part of the fun of visiting a fish store is taking your time to look at the livestock before deciding what to buy. I shouldn't feel rushed or like I'm being treated as an inconvenience for browsing. I'd rather pay a little more at another fish store than support a business that makes customers feel unwelcome. I have given this place another chance. The reason their prices are lower compared to their competitors is that they do not quarantine their fish so you are at high risk of introducing fish that come with parasites from the wild or will cause Ick outbreaks in your tank due to the fish being stressed and their immune system being suppressed. I have setup a quarantine system and I quarantine every single fish I buy from them for a minimum of 2 weeks unless I see symptoms of parasites or illnesses in which case I will follow a strict quarantine regiment. Using this approach, I have successfully introduced several marine Angelfish into my system who were significantly cheaper than the competition. So I typically don't go to this fish store, but I came here to see if they had CPD's and they did so I ended up buying 10 in total and within about three days five of them have died. I have other fish in the tank so a different store that are completely fine as well as three other tanks that I've never had any problems with. I've never had fish died before. They were on the cheap side so I'm not sure if they're fish or just not as well taken care of. read more

Definitely come here if you're looking to support your local fish store to get a new betta fish. They all looked very healthy and they had such a large selection of king/huge bettas which is exactly what I was looking for to add to my 10 gallon planted tank! Affordable prices compared to large chain pet stores and the workers were all super friendly the younger guy helping me out was very nice and helpful. I frequent fish stores in OC and LA county, and this place has the BEST prices undoubtedly. The staff here are for the most part, pretty great! The fish I buy from here sometimes come with some disease, and I do not mind that because of the price. **Basically, You know what you are paying for. I once bought some fish from here and went on a short trip after, and ich wiped out some of my oldest fish (5 years+) by the time I came home. I attributed this to my own negligence, it is not uncommon to buy fish infected with ich anywhere. I bought some Pearl Gouramis from here that I had been searching for months, and I asked for all *females* because males tend to be aggressive. The guy helping me said "OK" and proceeded to sell me 3 *males* LOL. The day I brought them home, they had big white lesions on their heads, severed pelvic fins, and nipped fins. Not surprising and I didn't really care because the tank they were housed in had just about every type of gourami, all of which are more aggressive than pearls. The screenshots below is from the day they came home, where the white bumps are visible. I decided to keep the male gouramis once I realized they had in fact sold me all males, if they were to be peaceful. I watched them steadily tear each other apart in my 40g over the span of a few weeks. My female dwarf gourami also had the same white lesions, so I figured they were bullying her as well. I decided they must go. Fast forward to today, I returned 2 of the male gouramis, and the store so graciously gave me credit for my gouramis, a few weeks after purchase too! This is not common in my experience. This would have been a 5 star review after my experience today, because they gave me credit for the pearls and let me pick other fish. I didn't take home any female gouramis because they had white patches and were pretty beat. However, upon getting home and deciding to take a better look at the gouramis I DID keep, I noticed their white lesions grew bigger, had legs, and were crawling over their scales. I removed the now obvious parasites with a knife and set them on fire lmao. I called the store back, to inform them that the bumps on the gouramis I had just returned are in fact crawling live parasites that I had just removed from my own fish. Parasites that I had brought home, from THEIR fish initially. They said "dont worry we will take care". I know some of their workers try their best to keep everything up to par, but be wary of sick fish when shopping. They have the best prices, so there's the tradeoff. Update: parasite I got from here was fish lice, Argulus. I will probably still go here, because it is so damn affordable, but DO BE AWARE that you may be walking into a big pain in the ass when you bring home diseased fish. Inspect your fish carefully before you buy them, don't be like me. Do not settle and buy beat up fish. This way, you will get the best of both worlds, the cheapest prices whilst avoiding their sick fish lmao. Tong's nearby isn't all that great either, with double the prices AND sick fish At the end of the day, if you love your current tank, I wouldn't risk bringing home fish from here unless you have a quarantine tank, which I do not. I have had MANY good experiences here, hence the 4 stars, but all it takes is a few sick fish to cause mass destruction. Nobody has time to be constantly identifying the new disease they brought home. But I love this place nonetheless, and the select knowledgeable workers :) read more

This store has been there awhile. Unfortunately it shows. Walked in and passed by at least 3 employees and not one said hello. Dry goods are well stocked. Fish looked ok, but the tanks are so old, a lot of them the glass are damaged that you can't really see the fish well. Would do lower than 3 stars but I'm assuming it's a family business and don't want to ding them too hard. Hopefully they take the criticism constructively. LFS store are a dying breed. Eric is the one and only person that cares about the customers and their new fishes! He isn't there to make a sale but to make sure these pets are well taken care of in their new homes. Before we even purchased anything, he thoroughly went over what we needed regarding set ups, how to set it up, which fish gets along with each other, etc. We purchased a pufferfish from another store as our gold fish's tank-mate. Eric quickly educated us on why this isn't the best idea (esp bc we didn't have the proper set up for the puffer yet). I would return here to buy more fish. Came here specifically for small freshwater fish for my little Nano tank and they didn't disappoint. They had a pretty good selection and the prices were extremely reasonable. I've been running around to several different fish stores and while some look nicer in ambience and have bigger selection, some of the same type of smaller fish such as tetras and guppies are just as nice here and for half the price. Wish I lived closer. Visited family and luckily they live down the street from this shop so it was easy. It is located inside a plaza right beside the 405 freeway. I mainly like that this shop has great prices. I wish I came in much sooner before starting all my tanks. Easily spent over $100 here but came out with more than I would have at my LFS. Bought mostly cardinia skittles colored shrimps, Cories, Betta, Balloon mollies, and some frozen bloodworms for my puffer fish. Also grabbed a nano rimless tank to give my shrimps privacy. I plan to return for more shrimps if I am in the area. Would love to grab some live mealworms next time too. They had shelves full of supplies and treatments. Tanks. Cichlids tanks. Frozen fridge for fish food. Live mealworms. I received excellent customer service from a young guy who helped w/ all the fish. Owner was friendly too. I've been going to this store for years. They're pretty much the only place I get fish. There's a wide variety and they have the lowest prices in the area by far. They also have a great selection of frozen fish foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, which are also at a great price. There's the common fish like neon tetras and tiger barbs, but they also bring in some harder to find species like Congo tetras, killifish, Denison barbs, hillstream loaches, and rainbowfish that you wouldn't normally find in your chain stores. The owners have always answered my questions on how to take care of different types of fish and I've gotten better at the hobby thanks to them over the years. I'm currently sporting some Conchu's blue tetras and Boesemani rainbowfish, with plenty of others, that I all got from here. Most of the fish came into the store small, but they grew and colored up over time. The only downsides I can think of is that they don't have a great variety of plants and I have gotten fish with ich a few years back that nearly wiped out my aquarium. I'm hoping that was a one-time event. Pro tip: they restock their fish early in the week, so don't wait until the weekend if you want first pick! (But be sure to quarantine before adding to your tank.) read more

Also very knowledgeable so any questions they would try to help you find an answer and help you save $. I had a pump internal filter problem and wanted to buy another one. May was helpful to tell me to clean the propeller as it's the cause and not a motor problem.. duh... I forgot about propellers !! I kept cleaning the sponges and shaking the motor .. Before covid I used to buy fish from them and they were cheap. Now after the pandemic I went to buy a few guppies to give my little sister as a pet and I asked an employee that I wanted 5 feeder guppies. He misunderstood and netted too many and tried to charge 5 dollars worth and I wanted only 5 guppies for 50 cents. He got annoyed and put most of them back in the tank and gave me 5 for 50 cents. The owned said "Next time I will charge 5 dollars per guppy". It goes to show they care more about profit than the wellbeing of their fish. Some people who bought goldfish before were complaining that they were dying from disease the next day. I wont be coming back here due how poorly they treat their customers and the fish they have in stock. read more

You're not going to find better prices for healthy fish in OC. If you're in the hobby you know that some fish dying is inevitiable. I have the best survival rate with 405 compared to other fish shops (especially Tong's, their fish seem to always be sick). Workers that I've encountered are very helpful and friendly. If you see a variety of a fish that you like you should probably get it then and there because no gurantee that they'll still be there next week (I learned this the hard way when the guppy I wanted was sold out when I came back next week) they sell a lot of fish. However, their shipments are pretty consistent and they might restock on it or even get a different variety! read more

The prices are very low at 405 Tropical fish. The tanks are clean, and well marked. I find that the main reason I go to 405 is that the fish are healthy. I have otocinclus, dwarf pea puffers, and chili rasboras, all of which carry a higher risk of parasite and other infections. I have never had a single problem with the fish that I've gotten from 405. And the prices are less than half of what they would be closer to my home. I have a tank of orange Sakura dwarf shrimp that I'm breeding. They cost $4.95 at petsmart, and only $2 at 405 Tropical fish. And the ones from 405 are a higher quality. Keep in mind, this is a fish store. It's going to be humid, smell like a fish store, and the employees are going to have a lot to do sometimes with all those tanks. It's not going to feel like a fancy hotel or restaurant. None of them do. I never expect information from fish store employees, I do my research at home first, to decide what fish are right for my tanks. Sometimes I do an internet search there at the store to find out a fish's size, temperament, tank requirements, and how best to acclimate it to my tank. I don't expect someone to hold my hand for a $2 fish, but I do always find the best value and the healthiest fish at 405 Tropical Fish. read more

Great pricing on salt water fish. Smaller selection but good variety . Small store but they pack a lot of suff in that space. The staff was friendly and helpful. The salt water runs $0.70 cents a gallon so $3.50 for a 5 gallon water change is pretty good. Probably stop by whenever I'm in the OC next time. read more
