I called Ellis aquatics because I saw on a post they had biota yellow tangs. The owner was friendly and held the tang for me. I drove from an hour away to pickup the yellow tang. Unfortunately, I had an issue with the yellow tang and it did not make it. I contacted the owner about my issue and he helped me out. He took the time to text me and tried to figure out what happened even when the store was closed that day. He went above and beyond also gave me advice on how to prevent issues again. Long story short I ended up getting another yellow tang that he held for me which was the last one as well. Almost two weeks later and the tang is thriving and happy. Definitely will be coming again they also have other healthy exotic fish and coral for the best prices Ive ever seen. Super clean and very friendly environment would definitely recommend!

Small but plentiful. The store is packed with plenty of saltwater livestock at very competitive prices. Many coral frags to choose from starting at five dollars. Dry goods are also plentiful and cheaper than anywhere else. A one stop shop and a great place for saltwater hobbyists.

There is so much to say about Ellis Aquatics. So please bare with me. This is proudly, my new LFS and I've been coming here once to twice a week since December of 2021 for my reefing needs! Let's begin with prices. Their prices are unbeatable, in ALL of SoCal. If not, in the whole state (Never ventured into Central or NorCal for my reefing needs)! Trust me...their fish, inverts and frags are affordable. You don't need to get approved for a loan like most LFS's nowadays. To touch briefly on their dry goods, simply put, Amazon has nothing on their dry good pricing! Secondly, the quality of their animals. Exquisitely put, they're impeccable!!! Their fish, although not QT, hardly if ever have ich (I only spotted spots once and it could have just been sand to be honest). Which says a lot about their care and attention to detail. Their animals are always happy and healthy. Never see dead fish, ever! Corals will be corals, that we all know. For the most part though their corals are ALWAYS shining bright and polyp extension is on point! Third of all, their moral compass! The reason I'm writing this review. I was able to have a moment with the owner today (rare for me, because I like to be in and out due to my busy life and they're usually tending to customers (newer reefers)). He allowed me to pick his brain on a few things. Although, extremely knowledgeable of the hobby and the love of the reef industry shows in the quality of the animals. I could never figure out why the quality didn't match the pricing! I've been a hobbyist since 2004, I've shopped at the majority of shops from as far up as the Valley to as far south as San Diego and as far east as Las Vegas! I know pricing for the most part! This leads me into my final take. Lastly, the main thing I took away from that conversation is why he keeps such competitively low prices on beautiful pieces, because he has ETHICS! Not like a lot of these LFSs! He made two points regarding price gouging and I quote "....I wouldn't be able to sleep at night and I remember when I was a kid in a LFS." He is trying to keep the hobby going for everyone especially the kids. The future of our hobby! Not just those that can afford it. Not just the wealthy, but the "poor" as well. In conclusion, although I don't know for sure, I can say with confidence that's why he chose to serves the City of Compton and not the City of Torrance. He has his philosophy and he is sticking by it (kudos) and that's why the locals will always be there, entering and exiting. Rain or shine. He allows his philosophy to guide his business decisions (rare in this hobby). With that, I pray that Ellis Aquatics is prosperous for many, many years to come!

Awsome reef and equipment. Jayson and Jose are great help. Amazing price. 10 plus 10. please come and enjoy so many fishes and corals. i can be there all day. Looking 4 a golden angel. Jayson said yes we can get it. worth the trip from anaheim. 30 mins drive. i expect to spend 49$ came out with 149$. lolz wife will not be eating this week. j/k thank u both. will come back 4 more.

I've done my rounds around LA looking for the best LFS now that I've finally gotten settled in the city. Super glad to have gone out of my way to visit Ellis Aquatics - there's a couple reason I deem this to be my go-to store from now on. Long review ahead, but it's a synthesis of my now 7th visit after doing serious homework around the LA LFS scene. How I define "best" -- To me, there are three dimensions I care about the most, and they are the following: (1) Ownership cares about the health of the fish. Jason (the owner) is an outstanding reefer himself. You can just tell by how he runs his store / operation. Ask about how some of the steps / set up he has in the store to minimize disease (key word: minimize - it's always difficult to be disease free in any operation where hundreds of livestock from all over the world are imported weekly). On top of a huge UV sterilization system, the fish are fed with anti-Protozoa soaked food and the like (and this is just me paraphrasing basically half of everything they do to minimize fish disease in the system). Not to mention, there's a recent development to move the fish-section to a copper treated system. (2) Variety. They've got it all: from your zoas and mushrooms to your torches/hammers and an entire SPS selection; they've also got a beautiful selection of fish refreshed weekly from anywhere, and the owner will also do special orders if you're looking for something specific. My favorite has also been their own home-cultured phyoplankton and pods at great prices. I can't afford the space in my own house to run my own cultures, and Ellis has exactly the amount that I need and am able to purchase. They've got your RO/DI water which they check for TDS several times a day, along with saltwater they sell at extremely reasonable prices. (3) Prices are reasonable. First time I walked into a store and my jaw dropped at how reasonable the prices were for everything. There's a reason I drive 45 minutes every week to get my RO/DI water filled along with the occasional random doodad, be it the recent macroalgae I got to feed my picky Foxface, or the extra syringe I desperately needed to dose my phyto accurately. Thanks for caring about your livestock, your inventory, and your customers. This is the only fish store I'll ever need to go to so long I'm living in LA. read more

This has to be the most affordable saltwater store I've seen in the hobby. I have heard so many saltwater keepers raving about the place so I had to go and I was Not disappointed. They have so many affordably priced zoas and other corals in the front as well as bigger, more expensive kinds. Their sexy shrimps were some of the cheapest prices I've seen in the area and incredibly healthy as well. They keep some macroalgae in stock although not many varieties but it's uncommon to see them in most SoCal stores. They had multiple varieties of bubble tip anemones and lovely acros. Each tank has multiple pointer sticks so you can point to the coral you're interested in getting which is just a minor detail that shows how much thought this business puts into every action. If I could give 6 stars I would! read more

Unfortunately I am not able rate more stars since this store is deserving of it. This store has been recommended in a Facebook group that I'm in by different people multiple times a day. Only problem is that it is close to 1.5 hours away from me and I just thought it wasn't worth it. Bored on a Saturday I said screw it and made the drive. Soooo sooo worth it !!!! Their coral selection is the best I've seen in a store EVER!!! Their prices are hands down the best !!! I will no longer go to any other store besides this store !!! I was helped by the owner and he is the nicest person ever. Thank you guys so much !! I think it's time for me to get a second tank with these prices. read more

This place seemed great at first, the staff seemed very helpful but they were Just trying to sell their stuff. I spent a good amount of money at this store on corals, frozen food, sand, chemicals, and an anemone. I explained to the staff member that I had never had an anemone before. He didn't tell me it could ruin my entire tank, kill all my fish, poison all my rocks and sand, he didn't even tell me I had to acclimate it. And this is exactly what happened. Working in the customer service industry it disturbs me that when I brought this to the attention of the staff via Facebook messenger and text message I was ignored. Educate your clients. Don't be so excited to sell stuff. read more

I like this store because of the wide variety of frags but I do wish customer service was better. I went there and no one asked if I needed help. I had to wave the guy down a couple time for help. I guess their conversation about protein drinks was more important then customer service. Updating my review because they reached out to me and offered me store credit which I didn't asked for. The fact that they did this was absolutely customer service! read more

Hey guys, it's Ash. This is by far THE best reef aquarium store in California, and I've been to quite a few. Check it out. They take great care of their coral and fish/inverts and they always have high quality specimens. Excellent service without fail. As far as I'm concerned, everyone there deserves a huge raise. Worth every single star, if I could I'd give them more. Never disappointed coming here. The effort and care they put in shows big time. You guys have a lifelong customer. Keep it up read more

I've been to this location a hand full of times now and while they have a good selection and great prices I feel like their customer service has room for improvement, I usually go with my cuz. Because we both have tanks and we are never greeted , we do a lap around the tanks and then wait to be helped , the workers get to taking to what I assume are their regulars and forget your even there, I don't wanna be rude and interrupt so I just wait and wait , then someone else will walk in and they help them, so I have to be like hey Ive been here for a while can I get some help, it's not a bad shop but this place is about a 45 minute drive for me and I feel uncomfortable the whole time I'm in there cause I feel invisible .... I just wish they were friendlier I'd probably shop there more ... read more

There's some beautiful corals and more than expected from a small store. There are some neat frags for good prices. Very full and healthy corals, my hammer lasted through a long tire repair and a long drive home. Ellis aquatics always returns your call and just exemplifies great customer service. read more

I absolutely love this place! They have by far, hands down, without a DOUBT the best prices for corals, fish, CUC. I live up in Bakersfield and I never mind the drive down to just visit his shop. The guys there are always friendly and helpful with my choices. They have an amazing selection of corals, from frags to full colonies and again always at great prices that you probably won't get any where else. Not only just corals and other livestock. But they carry a great selection of food, cleaning supplies, supplements, lighting and much more all at great prices. Definitely would recommend stopping by here. read more

I was new to this hobby and searching for a good tropical aquatic store and found this place on yelp. Ellis aquatic is awesome place for coral, fishes and equipments. Everything you need for your tank the they can order it if they don't have it in a store with a reasonable price. JIMMY aka big cat and Jason was really helpful not pushy at all on buying their product but they will give you really helpful tips to be successful on your tank. I recommend this place 100% to people who are looking for a tropical aquatic store. read more

I been coming to Jason's store for about an year, how frags are of amazing quality, healthy and colorful! (My fav is the 5-10$ frag sections, you can find amazing gems in there at times). What I appreciate the most is Jason's honesty and knowledge. He helped me figure many spec of keeping a healthy, stable tank and he good at matching your understanding of the hobby. Most tanks were maintained and maybe one or two small ones needed attention. I spent lots of money on back to back visits. 7 months later went for more corys and unfortunately some changes have brought on this review. Peering into some of the very first tanks as I walked in, I'm noticing dead fish sprinkled about. I understand they could've had a busy rush, but they didn't look freshly deceased. Not a good look. Algae growth in some areas, yikes!.. and this is the first time seeing significant hair algae in a high tech display tank. Higher prices on basic plants than the competitors. They aren't rare, large or fancy and half are raggedy or already dying. Their anubias (cased) used to be BIG and impressive, but now small and they're charging the same price. Lady behind the counter helped me, but when she made a "portion" of guppy grass I discovered it was HALF the portion those guys have given me in the past. And I still got charged $8.99 for it! Not like they didn't have enough to sell- they definitely did, but even so I feel she should've pro-rated for just plucking out 5-6 sprigs. I also bought some (Venezuelan?) corys, albino corys and amano shrimp. The Venezs are super happy but now I see one has white on his back, hoping that's not fungus! And sadly two of the albinos didn't make it so far. They were tiny and delicate, so it might've just been a sensitive species (even though I acclimated them slowly over hours) but still that's money I'm out. The good part is they have a pretty wide freshwater fish and shrimp variety and most of the tanks are kept clean. Fish I've bought previously are still happy and thriving. They also have a large supply of dry goods, frozen food and supplies which is convenient. Parking is plentiful in the rear and access through the back of store is awesome. I still want to check out the new fish they get in. Don't know if I can trust in it sadly. *EDIT* The owner reached out to resolve the portion issue. I'm hoping they fix the rest so I have confidence with live purchases again.

They also clearly know what they're doing. The staff is knowledgeable and can answer questions without giving you that blank stare you sometimes get at other aquarium shops. But the pricing is honestly kind of shocking. A lot of their equipment is outrageously overpriced compared to what you can find online or even at other local stores. For example, I saw a UNS double valve connector selling for about $60 when the same thing is easily available online for around $20. They also had the Kessil 35° reflector priced at $50, and I've never seen those go for more than $30 or $35 anywhere else. I get that local fish stores have overhead and can't always compete with online pricing, and I'm totally fine paying a little more to support a brick and mortar shop. But some of these markups feel excessive. If you need something immediately and don't mind paying a premium, it's a solid store with good selection and knowledgeable staff. Just be prepared for some pretty steep prices on certain items. Overall I'd say it's worth visiting, but definitely price check before buying equipment.

This is one of my all time favorite stores for both fish and coral it's more of a one stop shop than anything at amazingly low prices!
