I am comparing my gluten-free everything bagel, toasted, with cheddar/jalapeños and lox to the same item One had at Modem Bread and Bagel on the upper East Side (Lex and 80th). I will need to eat at the Chelsea Modern B&B to really compare? But my guess is similar results food-wise. Modern's bagels are superior. The texture of Tompkins Square's bagels is softer, almost verging on gummy, but not there. Wants to be gummy, but just a shade less. The texture of Modern's is 100% real bagel, the kind you tear at with your teeth. Much more authentic NYC in texture. The "everything" and pretty similar as does the cheddar jalapeño and lox. Price too. ($16 ish). Ambiance I cannot compare. I didn't go to Modern down here, obviously, but will and will report in over there when I do. The ambiance at Tompkins is cleaner East Village circa 1990s. Crammed in, alternative music, real art on the walls. Hand-painted signs. One sign saying "commit some kindness" -- which has that particular NYC mix of chutzpah with a socialist attitude. (It's not " please commit", right, it's a command.) All things I sure. The exposed brick even makes me feel old school St. Mark's Place without the mohawks, but some instances of cherry red, green or blue hair. Service is sweet and efficient--Modern on the upper east has one employee who is great but others who are "wuuuuut huh?" So that's a comparison to fine. But ambiance, service, whatever? I probably will pick Modern if I am alone because the GF bagels are spectacular. If with a glutinous companion? Maybe Tompkins. Have to see after I visit Chelsea Modern. I stopped by the Union Square branch of this mini chain during peak brunching hours late on a Sunday morning. As expected, the place was packed but staff keep the lines flowing, taking orders while customers are waiting to move through the line. The shop offers a pretty decent selection of boiled and wood fired bagels, and a list of cream cheeses and smoked fish. I got my whitefish salad on whole wheat and ate in the park: with only a few tables inside and out, most take their orders to go The whitefish was creamy and smokey without feeling too heavy, while the bagel had a great combination of char and chew. read more

Probably one of my favorite bagels in NYC because they're so chewy and soft and just the right amount to crunch. I didn't get to eat it this time fresh but I did stop by to get some to go to bring home with me in my flight and they basically gave me 2x the bagels I ordered because they wouid have gone to waste anyways. Tompkins Square Bagel is schmear heaven! They have all kinds and so many different varieties. What drew me here was their honey fig schmear! They gave samples of their schmears which were also delicious but the honey fig was hands down the best. I got this with an everything bagel and it was amazing. The bagels itself were nothing special but they were still pretty good. They do put a lot of schmear, which i did not mind, but it got messy. My husband got a breakfast sandwich that was good but again, the schmear options here were the star players for me. There was a small line that moved pretty quickly but it's confusing to find the line since there's quite a bit of people standing around the entrance waiting for their order. I stopped here on a Tuesday morning around 11am. It was busy, but not packed. I ordered the Garret Jones, which had egg white, chicken sausage, onion, and spinach, on a toasted whole wheat everything bagel. My order came out quickly. It was good, although I would probably try a different sandwich next time. The bagels are really fluffy and flavorful: a dream NYC bagel! There is limited bar seating by the window and a few long high top tables with stools. I wouldn't really sit and linger here, but if you need to stop and eat your food, it gets the job done. Another patron recommended adding bacon which definitely made it better. Strongly recommend this if you're looking for something hearty. Tastes like just plain cream cheese with cheese Blueberry bagel with cookie dough spread: this was also pretty disappointing. It just seemed overly sweet and didn't taste like cookie dough. Although we were disappointed by some of the choices, the quality of the food is still good, so I would just make different choices next time! Tompkins Square Bagels is famous for good reason. I came on a Saturday morning and there was a pretty significant line, but it moved fast. There were some people eating there, but most people seemed to be taking their food to go. Very casual spot, with a nice charm. It was packed with a long line inside all the way to front door. They had workers taking orders in line. Mine was helpful since it was my first time and I wanted recommendations. After ordering I had a fun time observing the ambiance, decor, menu, and huge cream cheese selection. Also, observed the kitchen. All seemed like controlled chaos! Someone takes orders In-n-Out style and writes each person's order on a piece of check paper. Customers can then present their order up front, and within a few minutes, they get their bagel order and can be out the door! We got an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and tomato, a plain bagel with eggs and sausage, and another plain bagel with eggs and taylor ham. While seemingly so simple, the bagel sandwiches were soooo good. We asked for all our bagels to be toasted, which really emphasized the chewy + crispy texture of the bagels here. Came here for a bagel breakfast and to buy some to take home. It was around 11am on a weekday but the place was still packed. I liked their order taking method. A couple of staff were taking orders from customers with the old fashioned carbon copy notebook type of stuff and one copy goes to the staff inside and the other handed for the customer to take it to the cashier to pay.
