The concept is so needed in this neighborhood and felt like a great addition as the menu stood out and there aren't many Japanese izakaya style restaurants in Queens. We went for a late dinner around 11pm and were advised that we can only order from the late menu as the sushi bar was closed. The appetizers were on the small side but expected. We thought the hamachi collar was well seasoned and very good. We then waited over 20 minutes for our entree and the staff were apologetic about the wait so offered dessert for the trouble which we also waited for over 20 minutes for this said dessert. This became a very long dinner, over 1.5 hours. There were many staff that came to check on us but the pace was off and it felt like our food was forgotten about or not sent to the table who ordered the dishes first. A table that came in 15 minutes after us got the same eel entree we ordered before we did. It felt slow and disorganized. I hope they work on this and can improve.

I've been seeing the viral eel omelette don in Japan and can't believe you can get it in NYC now!! Tomoni just opened in Woodside, Queens with a cozy izakaya vibe, and the sashimi quality is honestly on par with (if not better than) some omakase spots. We went on a weekday night and the restaurant was busy! Service was still very warm and attentive. Highly recommend getting a res. *Una Tama $39 * It was stacked with an extra-long grilled eel and a fat piece of japanese omelette over a bed of rice. The tamagoyaki went so well with the unagi. The eel had a nice charcoal-grilled aroma and a soy glazed exterior, with crispy charred edges and a tender center. It was already well seasoned, but they give you a mini brush so you can add more sweet soy sauce if you want, so it never gets too salty. *Sanshoku $36 ** It was beautifully arranged with bluefin tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. The raw egg yolk made the chirashi extra creamy, and the salty pop from the ikura tied everything together. I didn't even need any soy sauce! *Yakiniku $25 ** I wasn't expecting much from a gyudon at first, but I WAS SO WRONG. The beef had a smoky jbbq aroma, and the rice soaked up all the yakiniku sauce and the runny onsen egg. *Goma Hamachi $14 ** We also got a couple of their most recommended apps to share. The goma hamachi was seriously out of this world. They marinated the yellowtail with sesame sauce. But a bit pricey for just four slices. *Tsukune $9 * The tsukune (chicken meatball) was delicious, especially dipped in the raw egg yolk. *Geso Kara $14 The fried squid eggs were a solid snack with mayo on the side. The squid was meaty with a thin fried batter, but nothing mind-blowing. *Hojicha Parfait $15 ** It came with a generous scoop of hojicha ice cream, topped with kinako powder, red beans, kuromitsu syrup, mochi, matcha warabimochi, and strawberries. I devoured the whole parfait by myself. Definitely save room for dessert!

What a great addition to Queens! The ambiance was warm and cozy, and everyone was so welcoming and attentive. We ordered a few things to share. The chirashi was amazing. It was super fresh, and the sushi rice was perfect. I'll definitely come back to try their other dishes.

Went with a party of 4 and at a glance the place was spotless & effortlessly beautiful!! The little details from the utensils, plates, cups and lighting were astounding. We ordered the chirasu, salmon bowl, yakiniku bowl and shenshoku. The fish was fresh, melts in your mouth like butter. The raw egg on top made the fish more creamy and delicious. The salmon--- jeez was amazing!! It was most likely the best cuts I have ever had here in New York. The service was attentive, quick & accommodating. We wanted the Ebi-tama (eel) however was told they didn't have it. We later saw another table got it and it made us wonder why we were told otherwise. After confirmation with a server it was because the eel had to marinated for 20 minutes. We just wish there was a more clear heads up, otherwise we would have waited and gotten it. I can't wait to see how well this restaurant will continue to flourish.

Cuisine: 8 Service: 8 Decor: 8 Value: 5 Overall: 8 Queens has always lacked quality Japanese cuisine, hence there was genuine excitement when I heard about this restaurant opening a few weeks ago. What I heard was how this shop exceeds what I should expect from a local Japanese restaurant and therefore I have been here several times over the last two weeks to make my personal conclusions. Tasting a good portion of the menu, here are my thoughts on each item. I will provided summary at the end of this review if you wanna skip this portion. Shimesaba Tartare (8.5/10) - If you are a fan of Mackerel, then you must order this dish. It has very well balanced flavors with a strong emphasis on rice vinegar. I wish they provided more toast. Also, it would be nice if the toast was slightly more crispy. Negi Shio Tofu (8/10) - A surprise hit for me. I really enjoyed the texture of the creamy tofu and the combination of flavors from the amazing sauce. Shirasu Salad (8/10) - Recommended by the hostess as one of her two favorite appetizers, we decided to give it a try. Notes of bitterness from the arugula matches so well with the slightly sweet and tasty sauce. The cream cheese somehow worked well too. Misozuke Cream Cheese (8/10) - This was another restaurant recommendation and I had to try it because of how odd it sounded. Though the portion size is insanely small, the dish was quite delicious. Geso Kara (7.5/10) - If you like fried squid legs, this is right up your alley. I would prefer a bit more crunch, but it was fried well. Hamachi Kama (7/10) - Unfortunately, the collar we received was undercooked. I'll chalk that up to rookie mistake, but what we had tasted was delicious. Sanshoku (8/10) - You will hear me repeat that the rice is amazing for all the donburi options. I particularly enjoyed the raw egg adding extra flavor to the dish. However, the sashimi was just decent. Una-Tama (8.5/10) - Huge portion, good but nothing really special about the eel compared to what I experienced many times in Japan. Wish there was a crispier skin. Omelette is just average too. Yet, the eel sauce on that wonderful rice elevates the dish to one of the best in the city. Chirashi (8.5/10) - If you like sashimi on top of great sushi rice, then this option is for you. I would have liked a sweeter scallop or higher quality bluefin tuna, but once again, the rice makes everything better. A5 Miyazaki Wagyu (6.5/10) - With the accompanying sauce, the rice may have been the tastiest of the donburi options. However, I could barely taste the thinly sliced beef. Definitely not worth the price. Uni Negotoro Ikura (8/10) - This handroll donburi was good, but somewhat of a letdown because it should be divine. It lacked the richness I want from good quality chopped toro, as well as the creamy and sweetness from better uni. Vanilla Parfait (7.5/10) - $15 for two small scoops of ice cream with some toppings and a matcha sauce just seems too pricey for this neighborhood. The cornflakes added a nice touch, but the price! If you read this far, then you can tell that I am in love with the rice that Tomoni makes with all of their donburi items. It is their number one asset by far. I dare say that their rice rival some of the top Japanese restaurants in NYC. However, the food comes at Manhattan prices and not everything is worth that extra spend. If you find specific dishes you don't mind splurging on once in a while, then this spot will save you a trip to the city. It does have nice decor and excellent service. Unfortunately for me, Tomoni does not reach 5 star status because its fantastic rice could only cover up so much. There are still flaws in their food offerings that I pray they address. Furthermore, the price is slightly too high for what you receive, especially in Queens. Lastly, considering we have spent few hundred dollars each time we have been there, charging us for a couple extra pieces of toast and seaweed feels a bit lowbrow for a restaurant aiming for a high paying clientele.

Phenomenal food and the service was great. You can tell the sushi chef takes great care of his work. He chucked multiple eggs and scraps of leaves that were not up to his standard. Portions are fairly small except for the eel, so be prepare to order a few dishes. But the quality is definitely there!

It all starts with the rice, clean and friendly ambiance and service. We have been saying this for 6 years, that there is a good Japanese restaurant missing in this neighborhood. Now we finally have one The dishes are expertly crafted one leaf, flower and fish/meat piece at a time. Everything we had from make your own hand roll, to A5 Wagyu donburi to the sashimi appetizer was worth it! Excellent place to have authentic Japanese food and just a great time! We loved it so much

    Chirashi

Great new Japanese restaurant. All the dishes were pretty good, best was the una tama donburi MUST GET! The unagi was huge and tender. Chirashi was pretty good too, tho some cuts were better than others (lean tuna was ok but toro, salmon, and scallop was really good). I would definitely go back again! Affordable and good :D

I went on opening night of their soft opening, I typically don't like to go to brand new places but my friends wanted to go so I went with them. I checked out Tomoni last week and it was every bit as a delicious. As someone who eats a lot of sushi, the main thing I look for is not even the seafood, it's the rice. I thought the rice was made well, the texture was excellent, you could feel each individual grain and it was nicely warm, I enjoy warm rice as opposed to room temperature, but I did wish it had a bit more seasoning but that is preference. The highlight dishes for me were the chirashi, the eel and omelette over rice and their hamachi Kama, all three are must orders. It's also worth mentioning the restaurant is part owned by a Japanese owner and the head chef is Japanese. I thought all the food was good to very good, only part that needs some work were their cocktails. It's literally their first day so I know they will make some adjustments but I didn't love their cocktails. Overall the prices are high but this isn't your neighborhood sushi joint you order rolls and stuff, it's a fancy spot you go for a special occasion. The food: Chirashi- Bluefin Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi, Scallop(Hokkaido), Chutoro. This was my top dish of the night, the rice was a standout, so was the quality of the seafood. The $45 is on the high side, but this is better than any Chinese run sushi spot so it is worth it. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=TyIMngc8Qn0-97jvqx5Huw Una-Tama- Grilled eel with homemade eel sauce and dashi tamago. This dish is a show stopper, it looks so inviting and should be ordered. The eel and egg was huge! It was $39 but could easily feed two people. I enjoyed the flavor and texture of the eel and I also liked how the eel sauce wasn't too sweet. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=yK0eyDDlwtF2eCL61n0DNg Hamachi Kama- Grilled yellowtail collar with grated radish and lemon on the side. This was amazing, this was a huge collar and was cooked to perfection. I always order collars at Japanese restaurants and this should be no different. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=KeXSL9v7Qp3aFnJb7LORpw Uni Negitoro Ikura Handroll Donburi- Uni(Hokkaido), negitoro, Ikura. The uni with tuna diy handroll was good but it felt it was missing something, on paper it sounded amazing but it was just ok. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=GZqN5mrNtvPZf5Eka1fkJg Tsukune- Chicken meatball yakitori w/ raw egg yolk dip and scallion. Welcome to Woodside, Tomoni! We are so happy to have you here. All I can say is WOW. What a welcome addition to the neighborhood! My husband and I have been longing for a truly authentic Japanese sushi spot to open in our area, and Tomoni is beyond what we could've ever hoped for. It is SO DELICIOUS. As others have noted, rice is often in afterthought at inauthentic sushi spots. It's rarely seasoned or cooked properly. The chefs at Tomoni have truly perfected it. The fish is incredibly fresh and tasty, and the A5 wagyu donburi is honestly a mic drop dish. This is a difficult time to open a new business given that many restaurants are struggling and people are dining out less, but this place is so worth every penny. I plan to come here often and truly wish them so much success. I wish I could give them more than five stars. I also want to note that the service was excellent and everyone was extremely kind and welcoming. The restaurant is also really aesthetically pleasing. Very modern and minimalist approach. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan and can't wait to return!

Great food and service. For sure the best Japanese food in queens! I've been to this restaurant several times every week and love ordering their sanshoku, maguro, uni negitoro ikura, geso Kara, and karrage. Highly recommend this restaurant, amazing addition to the community

I Brought my family here Great service , awsome staff , very tasty food , will definitely go back again .

This place is exactly what Woodside needed. The food is so good. I had the donburi and the quality of fish was amazing. Every cocktail on the menu is different but they're all so good in their own way. You can really tell they put a lot of time and thought into each one. The staff is super nice and the whole place just has this cozy feel to it that makes you never want to leave. So happy this is in the neighborhood now, and can't wait to go back!
