Visiting Denver I knew we had to visit the REI Flagship store located in downtown. The store itself is huge and located within the restored 1901 Denver Tramway Building. This building is all brick and just stunning to walk up to and into. They offer every type of equipment one would need for their selected sport whether it's hiking, climbing, cycling, camping, paddling, skiing, snowboarding or overall fitness. They also offer the option to rent outdoor equipment, provide a full range bike shop and ski and snowboard services. The store features a 47 foot tall climbing wall right in the middle of the floor and other unique decorations. I have never been in such a huge REI store but it was a fun experience. My husband managed to spend all his saved up gift cards (Ha! Ha!) Service was friendly and helpful from the staff. REI can always be a little on the spendy side but I always try to catch their sales. I love being a member and receiving my annual rewards. Parking is the only downer as it's only free for the first hour. After that you must pay and believe me, an hour is not enough time here. So glad we had the opportunity to stop in, shop and check out this historic location.

Wilderness Exchange is across the street from the flagship REI megastore. Park in the large lot (first hour free) next to Wilderness Exchange. We always enjoy hunting for bargains but it was not fun going through the mostly meh merchandise here. Hiking wear was still expensive even with tags showing markdowns of 25-50% off. We found the choices for women's clothing limited and less appealing (ugly colors and zero style) than the men's clothing. Plus secondhand clothing was mixed in with unworn merchandise. As for camping and hiking gear, it's hit or miss. Gear is expensive here even if it is marked down. If you are a hiking or camping newbie, bring a friend who can advise you about brands, quality and prices plus do some comparison shopping at REI. Confirm Wilderness Exchange's limited return and warranty policy.

I don't get the chance to visit many 'mountaineering' shops anymore for one reason... I've got a…read moreton of very high quality gear that has lasted me for many years but when I need something, like a recent pair of SCARPA boots, I visit Bent Gate. For many of us climbers, we used to have similar shops from yesteryear, Holubar, Frostline, Boulder Mountaineer, the 'old school' REI and the vintage Neptune Mountaineering, these shops had high quality gear that lasted the test of time and wear. Nowadays, fashion rather than function seems to be the selection at 'outdoor' shops. Ok... there's Bent Gate that still carries higher quality gear for folks who like to 'get at it'. Sure, you get what you pay for but the stuff does what it's supposed to do albeit at a price point a little higher than average. However, if you ever needed gear that will not fail, buy the better stuff for in the long run, you'll not only come out ahead but it might save your life. Bent Gate is such a company that strives for selling better gear... period!

There were three young ladies working at the front of the store, chatting amongst themselves. Not one customer was greeted when (we) walked in and checking out felt like an inconvenience to the staff.
