I had a tight schedule today and was in the mood for pizza so I stopped at Tomaso's on the way back to Cedar Rapids. I freely admit to being a long time pizza snob, but on the other hand I eat them at Subway now and then. First, the pizza at Tomaso's is very expensive. I spent $16.00 for what amounted to about 2 slices in the real world, and notwithstanding some decent toppings, this pie was VERY overpriced. What is pizza? Crust/bread, sauce, and toppings. The crust was forgettable at best, I ordered thin, and all I can say is that in fact it was thin. The sauce was red, no more to say, nothing to justify almost $20 for a small pie. The toppings were OK but were mostly green peppers (gross at best IMHO) chopped by a machine and thrown here and there on the pie along with canned black olives. At least the artichokes were not all choke and were edible. I spent a year near Scranton PA in the small town of Tunkhannock PA. There is a place there called Antonio's Pizzeria, and in my view, the people from Tomaso's would do well to make a pilgrimage there. I often had two slices, the most I could eat, and they cost me around $6. They made big pies, reheated the slices in a few minutes, and the result was really good. For what cost me $16.00 at Tomaso's I could get there for less than half, and it was WAY better. This included premium toppings such as fresh broccoli, fresh mushrooms, and chopped tomatoes, WAY better than what I ate today. In the end all Tomaso's has in its favor is way higher prices. I have no idea how the pizza fans in CR voted Tomaso's #1 nine times. There is no way I'll shell out big bucks for more pizza barely above Pizza Hut quality, and that is most certainly NOT a compliment. I think in the end I'd rather go to Subway and eat one of their little pizzas, and that is a sad comment on the state of pizza, mostly Tomaso's, in lovely Cedar Rapids. I would try Pappy's to see if there is hope, but they are only open at night and I avoid stuff like pizza late in the day. read more
