bulgogi hot stone
Bernadette T.

I go to Tofu House whenever I'm craving tofu stew! This location in Mira Mesa is quite larger than the Convoy location. I came around 6pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy, but became much busier when we left. The menu is posted on large posters on the wall, and they have a selection of hot stone bowls and soup. Service is pretty straightforward, they take your order quick, and bring out the banchan and food quick, they don't really check up on you unless you call them, that's just their style of service I usually get a special combo (chef's special and bulgogi hot stone). Chef's Special has a good amount of seafood fillings and tofu! I laugh at the "baby on board" zero spice level on the menu, and apart from that there's 4 spice levels to choose from. The spice levels don't seem super accurate, I got a medium spicy and it wasn't very spicy to me. The bulgogi hot stone has veggies, rice and bulgogi, and comes out SO hot and stays hot for such a long time, I feel like I have to wait a long time before I can dive in. The rice also burns onto the bowl if you're not careful; I do like crispy rice, but the bowl is SO hot, it just burns. I do feel like their meat portions are smaller than usual, which disappointed me a bit. They used to put out eggs at the start, but they changed it so they bring it out after you order, where you only get 1 egg per order, which you can crack into the hot stone/hot soup for it to cook. Overall, I still liked the flavors of the food but was mostly disappointed by the amount of meat in the dishes.

meat party

I honestly love gate keeping this place but the food is so good. service is super quick and ambiance is also lovely and chill very cozy as well. I always order a meat party and it never fails literally delicious. But don't come here if you want to eat food fast this place you definitely have to take your time with because the food comes out SIZZLING!!! So be patient and chat and pro tip .. stir the food frequently to cool it down!

Bro I only came here cause I was craving some tofu soup but oh my gosh, this is possibly one of the worst tofu soup I have ever paid for . The service was ok but the fact the server immediately brought out the check after my food came was kind of shocking. Like bro, I barely got a glimpse of the food. I ordered the Chicken Tofu Soup ($17?!) which was so disappointing. The chicken was crumbly (?) and there was hair in my side dishes . The soup didn't even taste like Korean Tofu Soup, it tasted like what my mom would cook for me when I was sick, AND THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT it's just I came here for Korean Tofu Soup, not my mom's remedy soup (no offense). I'm ngl, I was studying for my finals before this and was feeling really unmotivated AND THIS WAS MY LAST STRAW! Try this place at your own risk!!

Vegetarian boiled tofu, comes out boiling hot!

My boyfriend took me here on our very first date almost 3 years ago and we've consistently kept going. I've only dined in here twice, both times with friends and both times have been great. The service is really fast and the food, while I can only speak for the vegetarian boiled tofu, is delicious. It comes out extremely hot, like boiling hot so my boyfriend and I usually let it cool down for 10+ minutes before digging in and even then, it's still hot. Obviously there's a different experience when you dine in, like when you first sit down they give you kimchi, fish cakes, cucumbers and a few more things but unless you request it, you don't get that during takeout. The only gripe that I have is they seem to kind of want to shoo you out once you're finished eating so they're constantly coming to the table, asking if you need anything, dropping off the check, and clearing the table so be aware if you go with friends and you want to hang out and enjoy yourselves while you catch up. You might want to check out a dessert spot if you want to keep the party going.

Bulgogi Hot stone with brown rice

First time to try this place since we were down in San Diego and glad we did. My husband ordered the hot stone pan fried tofu and he loved it. I ordered a combo meal which includes bulgogi hot stone with brown rice and chef's special tofu soup. Everything was delicious and a pretty good sized portions too! The interior dining is clean and restrooms are clean and well stocked. People were already waiting outside for the door to open at 11:00 AM on a Sunday. I would highly recommend this place if you want to try authentic Korean food!

Service is always fast here. We were seated quickly upon arrival. They bring out 4 banchan dishes right away. The waiter took our orders and brought out our dishes soon after. They only give you one free egg per dish. We both liked our seafood tofu soups with the nutty black rice and banchan vegetables.

Hot Stone + Tofu Combo

Glad there's one in MM but it's more of a nice to have as an option rather than a must-have all the time thing. Came recently with a group of 6 for lunch. Food: They do have a good combo deal where you can get a hot stone crispy rice with a smaller bowl of boiled tofu which is great if you're hungry or going to split with one other person. Also I really like their banchan. Service: Workers are pretty flat but straightforward; they take your order and leave you alone for the most part. It took a while to get our check though as it got busier. Ambiance: Spacious with lots of seating and great for groups. They were playing a bunch of kpop (especially Twice) so they get points for that. Water: THEY DO NOT GIVE FREE WATER HERE. You have to buy Kirkland water bottles for 50 cents each. NOT COOL. At least they were cold but still, NOT COOL.

First time at Tofu House and the last time too. Food is just OK, edible. The hot tofu soup looks like just water instead of a broth. I can make better tofu soup at home, haha. Not much of service. I don't consider taking the order and bring food to the table as good service. That is just the bare minimum service. Nothing is free there. Water is bottle water which costs $0.50. They would bring to the table 2 eggs without telling the customer that one is only allows one egg per hot tofu pot. The other egg is $1 extra. "Brown rice" is also extra charge. They would also bring your check with just a total amount without itemizing. Terrible!

We were in the area and thought we'd give Tofu House a try. We frequent the Convoy location, and didn't know they had a third location aside from this one in Mira Mesa. With regards to parking, the Mira Mesa location doesn't have to share a lot with 10-15 other businesses so the parking situation is much better. This location is much bigger than Convoy. Way more seating and looks like they have a massive waiting area. I'm not 100, but they may have had tables outside for dining in the past? Looks like that's no longer the case. Service at this location is better. The servers actually greeted us (lol). They have QR code menus at the tables. If you don't want to go that route, they have huge poster sized menus plastered all over the restaurant on nearly every wall you turn to. I'm not sure what the thinking was in doing that... it definitely doesn't help with aesthetics in my opinion. We ordered one of our faves... hot stone meat party (for me) and hot stone seafood (for the wifey). The hot stone was good... it didn't taste much different from Convoy. The banchan (side dishes) didn't look super fresh, but had good flavor and we're the same we get at the Convoy location. Prices have gone up due to inflation. They also charge extra if you use extra eggs because of the egg shortage. They also charge $2.00 extra if you order brown rice for your hot stone. It's been months since we had Tofu House. I don't remember them charging for that in the past. I'm not sure if that's something new or just something with this location. Another thing to note is that they only serve bottled water (for a fee)... no cups or glasses of water. 4 / 5: Hot Stone 3 / 5: Banchan 4 / 5: Service 4 / 5: Cleanliness 4 / 5: Overall

Dumpling tofu soup (bottom) chefs special tofu soup (top) bulgogi stone pot (top)
Kellie C.

If you're looking for something quick and warm, I'd come by here if you're in town. The menu is smaller than most tofu soup restaurants and you can't swap the soup out if you are ordering the combos. The soup itself was good. I got the dumpling tofu soup and my boyfriend got the chefs tofu soup with bulgogi stone pot combo. The stone pot had a weird burnt smell to it. The stone pot was okay. A little on the sweet side. The food came out pretty quick. The banchan was pretty typical: kimchi, fish cake, cucumber, and daikon.

Tried the bulgolgi hot stone bowl. The presentation of it didn't really look like something you would get at a restaurant, more like something I threw together at home with all my leftovers. It tasted fine though, a pretty standard bowl. The banchan was overall also fine, except the fishcakes were on the salty side. They charge for water and that's a huge turn-off for me. 50 cents for a costco waterbottle. I'm not sure why they don't offer tap. TLDR: a pretty average restaurant that charges for water, but seats you fast

Food was actually pretty good and service was also decently fast. Kimchi pancake was extremely large and we certainly appreciate that! Definitely good value for money there. Flavor was also exceptional. It was soft and light and had that kimchi flavor but wasn't too overpoweringly strong either. It was fairly oily though so I had to press out some of that oil using paper towels. Spicy chicken entree item was really nice. Not too spicy and it also had some veggies in there which I appreciate. Sauce itself was delicious and I think the only downside is that there was not as many large pieces of chicken so it was hard to tell what was chicken and what was rice cakes. Friend and husband definitely enjoyed the beef bulgogi. I only tasted a little and it was definitely good. I was really excited about the Hot Stone Bibimbap, but it didn't deliver as much. Rice on the side was fairly crispy which was nice, but overall I think it was missing a little something. The Bibimbap sauce they gave on the side was a 10/10 though!

Came here with their revamped fine dining Korean Asian Fusion menu during Happy Hour and this place…read morewas absolutely amazing!!!!! First off, there is free parking available, just circle around the building until you see a garage entrance for retail parking. Two hours for free! Let me first explain the aesthetics of this place. Clean and modern with mid century feel accented with greenery throughout. Please note that they won't seat you until most of your party is present. We came here for Happy Hour which was from 4-6pm from Tuesday to Sunday! This is fantastic that HH includes the weekend!!!! To start, got a wellness shot which had a meld of juices and ginger. A great drink to ready your palate. For cocktails, I tried the Suika Spritz, which was refreshing! The Absolutely Pho-nomenal definitely tasted like cold Pho broth but spiked. It wasn't my favorite drink, but glad I tried it nonetheless. Of course we ordered the $1 oysters, and ordered all three - Baja, Pacific Northwest, & East Coast. It came with some Asian fusion sauces to dress our oysters. My fave was the Baja as these were the freshest! All three were smooth and non briny. On the HH menu we also tried - Bulgogi Birria Vampiro - Tender meat with bulgogi seasoned beef on top of a tostada. Really liked the meld of the two cultures in this dish. Duck Liver Mousse - Comes with rustic bread & crème fraiche. Very duck forward. I liked this because it was rich with flavor. Stone Crab Taco - Loved the nod to Loganisa in this taco! This was by far, my favorite protein dish on the HH menu!!!! Regular Menu - Mango Nasturium Kimchi Salad - I absolutely loved this vibrant and fresh dish!!!! I had to go back for second and thirds! Shishito Peppers with Bonito Flakes - This was definitely a fun and flavorful dish with lots of umami. Dessert - Hotteok and Vanilla Ice Cream - this was my favorite dessert! The pancakes were flaky and delicious!! Bonbunja Tiramisu - Beware! This has a strong coffee taste. It reminded of the strength and flavor profile of a Vietnamese coffee. I can't believe it's not cheesecake - Definitely a mix of a brûlée but with a cheesecake flavor. Confusing but works lol. We met the executive chef, Kyler, who explained and served some of dishes we ordered. The entire staff was so accommodating and even reminded us if we needed our parking validated! Our water never ran empty and our dishes were promptly taken away as we finished. Definitely a place to visit during HH since they offer amazing food and cocktail choices.

My wife and I went here for dinner expecting to eat great food based on all the high reviews and…read morethe upscale price, but we were instead left with disappointment and a big fat check with an unexpected automatic 20% gratuity fee for 2 people. Food: We got several appetizers and 3 entrees. We had the Mango Kimchi Salad, Bulgogi Birria Vampiro, Silkworm Pupa Tacos, Doenjang Risotto, Miso Lingcod, and Braised Short Rib. We got plenty of dishes to try, but unfortunately they were either simply mediocre or had an issue. The Kimchi Salad was too strong in spice and the mangos were unripe and hard. The Birria Vampiro was simply mediocre and sort of bland. Silkworm Pupa Tacos were again sort of bland. The Risotto was undercooked and crunchy instead of 'al dente'. Miso Lingcod had a very fishy taste and not much else. And the Braised Short Rib was too salty. Drinks: I got the Choi's cocktail and my wife got the Gangnam Style espresso martini. Both drinks were very well made and tasted great! Service: Unlike the food, the service was great! From the person who confirmed our reservation, to the staff at the front of the door, and to our server, they were all extremely friendly. We were celebrating an occasion, which we made known when booking and upon sitting down we got a handwritten card with a congratulations note. That was very unexpected and awesome! We also got a couple of complimentary cocktail shots from the bartender while we were there. Overall, I would say the staff and service was extremely good. Parking: The area of San Diego that Choi's is located is unfortunately very bad. Overfilled with homeless, drug addicts, and just plain shady looking people who roam the streets. I was overjoyed when I found out that they give you two hours of complimentary parking in a safe place! So to summarize: The staff that provide great service, the bartender with awesome drinks, and the free parking in a safe place simply do not make up for the main reason we were there: the food. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 was because of all these other factors besides the food. Before paying the bill and leaving, we did let the server know about the issues we found with the food in a very friendly and constructive way. She was thankful for the honesty and the feedback.
