    galbi soondubu combo $32.00
    Erik G.

We noticed they greet customers in English or Korean. My wife, who doesn't look Korean and speaks Chinese and English, mentioned they greeted us in English, which made sense. She joked that she has 4% Korean ancestry, lol. The service started well; my sweater even fell off the chair, and a staff member placed it nearby. As a first-timer, I asked some questions, and she offered helpful recommendations. The touchscreen ordering system is convenient, though I wish I had used the service button instead of flagging down the server a few times. We ordered the galbi soondubu combo ($32.00). The banchan spread was decent, including fishcake, bean sprouts, kimchi, cucumber kimchi, spinach namul, and cabbage, along with a raw egg. Unfortunately, I found a long hair in my fish cake. However, the server handled the situation professionally. She immediately removed the dish and brought a replacement, offering a sincere apology. The seafood soondubu was delicious, with shrimp and clams, and the medium spice level was perfect. However, some of the galbi was slightly undercooked and fatty. Although the restaurant wasn't busy, one server seemed rushed, and her tone was a bit cold when I asked for more banchan. Thankfully, a more friendly server took over, and we wished she had been there the whole time. Despite a few issues (hairy banchan, inconsistent service, and the undercooked meat), it was a mostly pleasant experience. While I want to like this place, the inconsistencies prevent me from rushing back.

We ordered the oyster soon tofu which was delicious. Also ordered the galbi which is good as expected. Place is nice & clean... and service was fantastic.

The best seafood pancake I've had in the area so far! I've been here a couple of times and they're not usually very busy so I've been seated very quickly. Their food is so good and definitely hits the spot for soondubu. You order off the tablet on the table and once you order the food comes out very quickly. Service is very fast and friendly here.

The mool naengmyeon is excellent. Even my brother thought it was awesome. My brother's favorite naengmyeon is usually Chosun because of the high quality buckwheat noodles and generous portions. Tofu Chon gives a larger amount of noodles. Unfortunately, the menu implies naengmyeon is only summer time offer.

Count your days BCD... LOL jk jk because this spot was so delicious and flavorful and def deserves much more love! I mean I love that there's no lines and it's self iPad ordering. But I wish they did have a more broader menu. LOVE that they offer EXTRA SPICY & PURPLE RICE!!!!! it was satisfying and I teared up. Every joint does the soup differently and I really enjoyed the tasty and savory flavor of the mixed tofu soup. Ambiance was nice modern and warm. Staff were also friendly and quick. Please check this spot out if you are a fan of Tofu soup. Valet is $3 depending when you go

Paid and bye bye.. see you soon. If you like tofu soup..you have to come here to try it. Faster and really tasty.

Tofu Chon in Koreatown is a must-visit for authentic Korean comfort food! Start with their flavorful marinated crab, then warm up with their rich seafood tofu soup made with silky house-made tofu. Don't miss the crispy tonkatsu, savory bulgogi, and juicy Korean BBQ short ribs-each dish is packed with authentic flavor and generous portions. Whether you're dining in, grabbing takeout, or ordering delivery, Tofu Chon is a spot you'll want to come back to again and again.

This new Korean spot surpassed my expectations. The interior design, service, and food were impeccable. The tofu soup was generous with the anchovy stock and is my new favorite in ktown. The raw marinated crab was juicy and flavorful. Seafood pancake and katsu were crispy and delicious. The Galbi Jjim meat was so so tender. No complaints. Amazing Korean food. Highly recommend! Everything we tried on the menu is really good.

Ordered the spicy noodle + galbi combo and it was exactly what we needed! Banchan variety was good too.

    Ark Shell Bibimbap
    Carlo G.

My first time trying Ark Shell Bibimbap from here and it was pretty good! Ark Shell is a type of shellfish used in East Asian cuisines. In this particular dish, the taste wasn't too fishy since there were a lot of Korean flavorings and sauces used. There also was a generous amount of protein, so the dish didn't feel like it was just rice. I got it with the purple rice and mixed together, it was delicious. The fried egg on top was also perfectly cooked and crispy with a runny yolk. Tha banchan selection was also good with all the fresh veggies. They paired well with the bibimbap, and of course free refills. Overall, the food here I had was great! This new Korean restaurant in Ktown offers several popular Korean classics. A solid choice with something for everyone. The interior and service are pretty nice as well. They have a parking lot out front, but it can get limited since the area is pretty popular.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW I just had lunch here with my friend. We were actually going to get pho next door but when we parked, we remembered we've been meaning to try Tofu Chon since they opened at this location and pivoted here. It was in between lunch and dinner time---around 2pm when we went and we were the only ones in there. It is bright and spacious in there and each table had an ordering pad for convenient ordering. Our server (I'm sorry, I didn't catch her name) was amazing and periodically checked up on us. The banchan was so colorful---you could just tell that everything was super freshly made. The kimchi was one of the best kimchi I've had in a long time. We both opted for different combos. I got the arkshell bibimbap + extra spicy mixed meat soondubu for $27.99. The food came out fast, piping out, and they were huge portions. BCD has NOTHING on Tofu Chon.

Not entirely sure what they're doing differently, but this tofu soup spot just tastes better than others nearby. The tofu is silky and the broth is savory and full of flavor. I also appreciate that they offer purple rice as an option and the banchan has been consistently solid. We've ordered the combo sets a couple of times, and while the meats are great quality and flavorful, they can be a bit hit or miss depending on the day - the meat dishes can be quite oily at times. That said, it hasn't stopped us from coming back. We've been here a few times just in the past month alone and I already know we'll keep returning. I keep telling myself I'll branch out and try other dishes, but it's hard not to default to the tofu soup every time. Ordering and checkout are done through a tablet at the table, which makes the whole process quick, easy, and modern. Restaurant ambiance is clean, bright, and inviting.

    Alexanria J.

Pretty clean and modern Korean restaurant atmosphere with self ordering tablets at each table. We tried ark shell bi bimbap and soy sauce chicken. Very delicious and good service.

Even when we ordered the food, the server said "that's it?" as if she was offended that we didn't order more food (lower sales?) I'm not sure if we misunderstood her attitude but that's kind of how it felt like. The quality and size went down and it was just... not good. This used to be my #1 spot for cold noodles but our other fav place was closed today so we decided to come here. As you can see, the size of the cold noodles became smaller. Everything was packed in this small bowl which made it harder to eat. I think they changed the noodles they use because it wasn't doing anything texture wise. It used to be chewy and had a good buckwheat flavor. The broth tasted.. like water with a splash of bone broth. The quality of galbi was also a disappointing as I feel like it's became less and the meat was burnt with more fat/chewy bits. The leek pancake was ok but again, comparing it to my picture from January, it was bigger in size and more dough-y. Service was decent previously but it felt a bit cold today. Again, super bummed because we still love this place but I probably won't be ordering their combo again. You can see in my pictures how often we used to order the cold noodles from here and you can compare the quality.

Don't let the line of people outside, or the lack of parking, deter you. The food is worth a bit of a wait and they have good efficiency with turning over tables. The beef bulgogi really stands out for me. The peppers and mushrooms elevate the dish beyond the onions and beef I'm used to at most Korean places. It makes the dish something you can confidently order as a standalone meal. But it was also a sizable portion. So if you are willing to share your food, the dish works well if you want room to try another item. The vegetarian bibimbap came with tofu so you can still get your protein. I didn't personally eat this dish but I'm a stranger to these parts and this was the dish that helped my group discover this restaurant. So it comes highly regarded. If you are looking for something a bit different, and don't need the crispy rice cooked to the hot stone pot, the Yulmu Bibimbap is a great option. The barley rice gives a unique feel to the dish and the bean paste stew made the dish more interactive than most. The stew was bubbling hot and was packing a punch as well. So be prepared for both kinds of heat with that dish. But definitely good, and well worth the deviation if you want to stray from the classics that this place nails every time. We will be coming back next time I'm in LA, for sure!

As for the food, maybe my expectations were a little too high because of all the hype. It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. The kalguksu noodles seemed to be made in-house, but surprisingly, they weren't as chewy as I expected, and I could taste and smell the flour quite strongly. That said, I really liked how the meal started with barley rice and yeolmu kimchi. It was a simple touch, but it made a great first impression. The bossam was pretty good as well. I also really liked the presentation of the bossam. The way everything was arranged by color made the plate look beautiful and very appetizing Overall, the food was decent, but the kalguksu itself was a bit disappointing compared to what I had expected.

The hot and sour soup was thick and chunky, just how I like the soup. The scallion bread sandwich with 5-spice beef was distinct. The bread was perfectly baked and the beef was flavorful and juicy. There was both mustard greens and pickles that gave crunch and acidity to balance the meat and bread. The lotus root salad was refreshing while still having a kick from their in-house chili oil. Dan Dan noodles were also excellent. Fresh cucumbers, chewy noodles, flavorful sauce. Hearty portions with enough for a lunch the next day. Also appreciated the speed of service. They also had really authentic and delicious looking cold appetizers like woodear mushrooms and lotus root salad. There was barely a line when we arrived and we were able to order and get a table without much wait. The food all came out at the same time and very quickly. We got their shrimp wontons, Chia Yi chicken rice, and sesame scallion bread stuffed with braised pork belly. I was ready to be transported back to Asia when I saw the dishes but tasting them left me wanting more. The shrimp wontons had very thin silky wrapper which was very tasty, but the shrimp itself was so bland and lacked texture. Most of the shrimp wontons I've loved had a nice bite to it from the baking soda soak but this was just soft dumpling skin on soft shrimp. The shrimp itself could've used more salt and white pepper too, but I suppose dousing it in chili oil helped. The scallion bread filled with pork belly is probably the tastiest dish. The pork belly was well cooked and paired well with the sweet sauce, crunchy peanuts and fresh herbs. The sesame scallion bread however tasted like it has been sitting out on the counter for hours waiting to be stuffed. The bread was cold and the exterior wasn't crispy, there were scallion pieces throughout but you couldn't really taste it. I would recommend trying other dishes before trying the chia yi chicken rice. The shredded chicken was dry and bland, mixed in with mostly soggy pieces of fried shallots. The rice was more flavourful because it was soaked in fragrant oils, but it also left it very mushy and almost congee like. The pickled radishes didn't add much to the dish either. I almost forgot but we also tried their honey lemon black tea and passion fruit black tea. Neither tea had a lot of tea flavor, it was mostly just sweet. The passion fruit syrup was pretty tasty but we both wished there was more black tea. I might be extra critical since I grew up with this type of food, but there are other restaurants in LA that delivers great quality Chinese food. TL;DR: Joy is a well decorated restaurant with good vibes that prioritizes speed of service over freshness and flavour of food.
