Thanks to all of the helpful Yelpers who pointed me in the direction of Today Barber. My hubby has gotten his hair cut at Supercuts for years by a sweet lady who moved out of state. He tried another girl at Supercuts but it just wasn't right, sometimes you luck out there and sometimes you don't. I looked up cheap men's haircuts on Yelp and I found this place close to home. We came in last night before closing and they were super busy. That's a very good sign. John cut my hubby's hair and he did a PERFECT job...so much better than the girl at Supercuts did. John is going to be my hubby's new haircut guy. It's walk-in's only here but I'll make sure John is working before we go in next time. this is my barber shop !! my boys Antom& Anhillip will take care of you hands down . I do my best at coming it weekly and they know what time it is everytime . sit down on that chair and let the pros do what they do best . I've seen a lot of negative reviews on this place and i know the source isn't the shop. Come in , cool down watch the game they got on , super chill area , enter the conversation and be a part of the shop and you'll have a good time . Now, we all know to only come out when it is absolutely necessary. But it is good to know that this place takes extra measures to not only protect you, but to protect the employees as well. Check-in at the door, and they will give you a call when your barber is ready for you. *remember to stay in the parking lot, just so there are no delays* Although masks are required at all times, even when getting your haircut, the experience remains the same. I went it for a skin fade and was pretty satisfied. I wish the lady that cut my hair used a blade to get the fade the most skin tight but she used a shaver which did the job. Overall it came out pretty good, especially for the short period of 25-30 min she spent on my hair. It could've been better but overall it was good. read more

DON'T TAKE YOUR KIDS. I've been going to this barber for months, and I appreciate the quality of the cut, convenience of the location, and the low price. Usually, the TV is not on in the establishment, but today there was a movie playing. As I sat down in the chair, I notice odd sounds that were impossible to ignore coming from the TV. I looked onto the screen, and a woman was being raped by two men. I said, "Are you going to keep watching that?" He responded, "No, I'm going to cut your hair." I said, "But, there's a woman being raped on the screen." (The scene was going on and on and on.) He casually responded, "Oh, it's just a movie." (And, he didn't plan to turn it off.) I indicated that I didn't think the movie was appropriate for a family barber, and I walked out. Probably won't ever go back knowing that this might be on the screen. read more

This is my regular haircut stop, and I love it. Sure, I keep my hairstyles simple (refer to profile pic for visual aid) but I've conducted a long, complex search to find the best option for me. Many cheaper places, especially chains, charge prices I consider excessive for what is, effectively, a buzz cut. I pay $7 + tip at Today Barber, and the service I get is worth easily twice that. The short of it: they do a great job really quickly, I'm a really important, handsome person and I don't have all afternoon to spend in a barber chair. How important? Well, very often, I carry a briefcase. Or at least I own one. I can carry it if I need to... Like I said: they're fast. If I show up for a haircut hungry, I need it to be over fast so I can go eat. Holy moley, I don't know how moley became holy however I do know that this shop is WELL WORTH the exiting the 55 South to get a trim. 99% of Barber shops I go to outside of my home salon in Las Vegas destroy my beard and leave me looking hideous. This place is an absolute treasure in Costa Mesa. I will come back here whenever I need a beard trim, hair cut, and compliment when I am in CA. I highly recommend them! In my 25 yrs of haircuts, I've had my share of accidental army cuts, bowl cuts, and just straight up barbers not listening to what I want. Nonetheless, they've all been somewhat acceptable, and EVEN. I came here two weeks ago for the first time and was fortunate enough to get an excellent and fast gentleman's business haircut. Today, I decided to go back, bad choice. The lady that initially cut my hair unfortunately wasn't there. The two younger guys, an older lady, and older man all said that I should go to this younger lady that doesn't speak English by just pointing at her as they decided to walk out of the building, not even giving me an option of who I wanted to go with. I tried explaining to her what it was I was looking for, but came to find out she doesn't know a lick of English. Another lady explained to her from a distance in a different language what I was looking for. That didn't work. She spent about 30+ minutes on destroying my hair and pushing my head around. I specifically asked to keep everything the same, but to please fade the sides. She re shaped my neck line terribly, hacked my sideburns from the middle of my ear, all the way to the very top, as well as completely removed my hairline closest to my eyebrows by going straight up from the sideburn to the top of my head. Needless to say I HATE when someone can't follow simple instructions. I did not hesitate to bring the mistakes to everyone's attention once the lady decided to say the cut was complete. Literally the two that got involved agreed that nothing was even, and asked if I wanted them to try and fix it. Which was impossible, my only option is to allow what's now missing to grow back. They went about saying thanks for coming in and pretty much you can go ahead and pay now. I will no longer be cutting corners with this barber shop that does not take pride in their business. It's sad that they throw an unqualified individual into a trade that takes skill. This is my go to hair place for the past 2 years. Who can beat 9 dollars for a haircut and 2 dollar tip? I use to go to the same barber, Tri, who knew how to cut my the way I liked. He was my same barber for 2 years and all of a sudden he got up and left...didnt say one word. I was in a extremely saddened and I felt lost. He was a nice guy who I could talk to and just chill with. I've gone 2 times since and I'm scared every time I go. It's more because I haven't had another guy cut my hair for the past 2 years instead of actually being scared of the place. Surprisingly, I've had 2 okay experiences since he left. Quality has dropped somewhat after initially being a great place for a cheap, quick and quality haircut. I stopped going but take my young son, 2-3 times a year as the price is cheap! One would think I would learn my lesson after 2 horrendous haircuts. All these new hairdressers and the on-the-spot training is a big red flag that quality of service is no longer a priority here! The best barber shop in Costa Mesa. As a male that is always on the go, its really hard to find a legit barber shop. I was a walk-in customer on a Saturday morning and was greeted and seated right away. I got a No. 4 on the sides and a No. 6 on top so I can spike it. My haircut came out excellent. I was very impressed how quick she was. I double checked the quality and it was done exactly how I anticipated. They only charged me $9.00 which I have almost never heard of. I have been there several times and have always had a good haircut and therefore wrote them a 5 star review BUT I was there this past Sunday and was the worst hair cut experience I have had in my 45 years! I got a "new barber" and he was clueless. He was a middle aged Asian man that took him nearly 45 minutes to "HACK my hair!" I told him cut it short on top because I like to spike it up and the sides and back a #2 please. His clippers were jagged as he cut my sides ( I bled a little), the top was long and the sides were un even. The older lady that runs (maybe owns the place) had to come over to give him advice and help. He kept combing my hair tightly down to the front ( I looked like Adam Sandler in the movie little Nicky) Later at home, my wife even noticed that the top was completely uneven with strands sticking up side wards!! A COMPLETE MESS UP!!! BUT...........that's not what merits a 1 star review , I have been there several times and I understand that from time to time, mistakes happens and I have had enough good cuts to be understanding When I got up and said "OK, that's it!!, this is the worst hair cut I have ever gotten" The manager/owner middle aged Asian woman came right over and she didn't say - Let me fix that - Come back another day so I can fix that - No charge - Not EVEN I AM SORRY!!!! I write a column for the Newport Beach Independent called "Why Shop Here" and I usually report on the inside story of businesses and about what makes them unique. My motivation to visit Today's Barber shop was more selfish since I just moved to Newport and was looking for an affordable (cheap) place to get a basic cut. And that's what I found. It might be a little off-putting for some people since this is bare bones--and bare floor-- and little English spoken. That's cool. Everyone was very friendly; ALL waved and said goodbye as I left and I walked out with enough money left over for lunch. For two. I thought so highly of the place I immediately came home and wrote an article which will be published and also wrote this review.
