We spent the weekend in Paso Robles area for my daughters 21st birthday. We decided to drop by Tobin James for one of her first wine tasting experiences. This is such a fun environment!! We were on a girl's weekend in Paso. Our first stop on the way in was Tobin James we ended up going back by on the way our because of the great experience. Our Sommelier was a wonderful gentleman with an accent. He took time to hear what we liked and why and then recommend wines accordingly. He also gave us some tips for metabolizing wine while we were tasting for the next few days. It was a lemon/ ginger tea that really helped us feel great. He steered us towards some wines that we loved, we bought some and enjoyed it at the house. We needed more on the way back through and on that visit we met many of the staff who were also wonderful. Slightly off the beaten path and not that scenic. Stopped by because it was on this list and several places were closed due to the holiday (Easter). Since it was end of day, we were the only ones at the tasting counter. The ladies were so nice and accommodating, that we had to leave with something - 1 bottle of the Sangiovese. This place looks like it might be a lot of fun when the tasting room is filled. Then again, I don't mind not having to taste elbow-to-elbow with someone else. read more

This place is the bomb! Free wine tasting, good prices in store on solid wines. They do push membership pretty hard, which I suppose is pretty standard for most vineyard tastings, but who cares when they're giving you free tastings on a ton of different wines. Tobin James seemed interesting upon arrival. Full blown western theme ... kinda threw me a little. Very different from other wineries and slightly off the beaten path. But it was a pretty large tasting room, had tons of little goodies to peruse. I guess that was the point though. The service was good but the wine was just ok for me. My mom purchased a bottle so I'm guessing she really enjoyed it. Just not my thing. read more

Probably the cheesiest tasting room I've ever been to.... wild children running around like animals. We had our dog with us - a service animal. And they questioned us what certifications he had. Our boxer was perfectly behaved. The wines weren't great either. The petite Syrah is the best option. Cheesy wine labels too. There's so many wine tasting places to go to - i would drive passed this one. read more

If you visit only one winery in San Luis Obispo county, definitely don't pass this one up! The entire staff is laid back and friendly, and professional. They have a nice variety of wines for the region and the James Gang club looks like a good deal. read more

We did ten wineries in two days (... I know...) and this by far was our favorite! We stopped here last on day 1 since it is open the latest (6pm.) we had a great pourer (Chris.) He was so fun, so engaging, and taught us so much about Tobin James wine and wine tasting in general. We had so much fun and were so happy we came. There is not a better place to taste wine than Tobin James. The staff, the atmosphere, the wine - by far the one of the most fun wine tasting experiences. This place makes wine tasting fun. You are not a customer, but rather a participant. They have some outstanding wines and (the reason for 4 stars) some not so good. However, I will always make sure I stop here. While I'm not a fan of their wines, I am in love with their champagne. It's always a favorite of everyone i know that "has" to stop by. It's a fun saloon bar type establishment, and they're always very friendly and knowledgeable about their wines. Not a personal favorite of mine, but a fun stop that I include onto all my trips when out of towners come for the tour of the central coast. read more

There's a reason why they refer to this place as "the party". I've had the pleasure of visiting here 3 times (twice for wine tasting and once for an industry party.) and each time was quite the experience. This is by far my favorite winery in Paso to visit for a wide range of wines and prices. No tasting fees, very friendly service and thier wine club is off the charts!! They have three tasting areas there however be forwarned that on weekends this is a popular stop for everyone as well as buses so it gets a little crazy. We have two wine club memembershis here cause we love it so, and the wine dinners are epic! read more

Awesome experience for our 25th anniversary. Easy parking, great decor, ratio of staff to guests was fantastic--spent almost 90 minutes with Stephanie who was incredible. Joined the wine gang almost immediately, and proceeded to taste WAY more than we expected, at no further charge. Product was really good, with the "Fatboy" zin topping our favorites list. I gave it three stars because the tasting room is cute, the servers are friendly and the tasting is free. The wine gets 2 stars. All the reds are very light-bodied and acidic like a Mediterranean style wine with short finish and hard to distinguish the grape varietal. The 2013 radiance unoaked Chardonnay is pretty good though. read more

Sooo went to the Tobin James party last night and first clue is I am not hung over. These parties use to be so much fun with good food, funky music and a wild time. Can you say, "Boring and bland?" The food was like cafeteria style lukewarm and the whole event has gone down hill. Oh well, 80 bucks per person down the tubes, never again. read more

Very busy and fun western saloon feel. Lots of attention from the helpers and lots of people tasting. We were told that they have the biggest wine club - some 20,000 members. This winery has a fun western theme and they sell cute paraphenalia but this is by far the most crowded, loudest winery I have ever been too. If the wine had tasted good it might be worth the crazy atmosphere but I won't be back. read more

This is a great winery to end the day as it is open later than most. The wines are all good. I don't think there is a tasting fee or they waive it with the purchase of a bottle of wine. The salon style is unique and has plenty of room inside. The staff are friendly and provide good service. Dogs are not allowed inside. read more

Tobin James was one of our first stops in Paso Robles. I had heard a lot about the winery before I even arrived. I think people either love it or hate it. It is definitely not a quant, quiet and classy place to go wine tasting if that is what you are looking for. Tobin James is more of an old town saloon that has been reincarnated as a loud and lively wine tasting venue. When we walked in there was loud music, people everywhere and even a fake tatoo stand. I stood there for a minute debating and then decided. "This place is awesome!" The pours were free and heavy, the employees were knowledgeable and helpful and I really love their motto that wine tasting should be fun. It was! There was nothing pretentious or stuffy about this place. If you want to let loose and have fun tasting a ton of great wines - this is the place to do it in Paso Robles. I liked it so much that I am now a member of the James Gang (their wine club) and am eagerly awaiting my fall shipment which should arrive any day now. While we were there, we tasted a ton of wines ranging from the Chateau Le Chacheflo (Cash flow - "cheap red") table red wine, to the $150 reserve Cabernet. We decided to pick up a few bottles of the Chacheflo as our shipments will only include reserve wines. I opened up a bottle of this last week and it immediately brought me back to my Paso Robles trip and the fun we had. It is a very stellar table red wine that is a blend of Mediterranean flavor. It's bold flavors and longing aftertaste makes me extremely excited we picked up more than one bottle. It will go great with red meat. It also has a price point under $15 (hence, cash flow). read more

I'd met and interviewed Toby more than once, so I was anxious to see the saloon/wine bar in real life. Very welcoming, much like the man himself, and Ally served us a nice line up. Of note was the 08 Chardonnay "James Gang Reserve", 08 Zinfandel "Ballistic", 07 Syrah "Rock-n-Roll", 08 Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard, 08 Zinfandel Silver Reserve and the 07 "5" - a Bordeaux blend. Next time I'm coming for one of his famous wine parties or taking the cruise! read more

Our first stop as we drove into twon on Hwy 46 from the long boring I-5 drive. Very convienient location and a great first stop for sure. We enjoyed the around 8 different wines and liked them all. The free wine tastings are a bonus to a fun wine tasting experience. The staff is great and are happy just to hang out and make sure you are having fun. My girlfriend said this was her favorite spot out of the dozen or so wineries we visited in two days. We will definately be back on our next trip to Paso. read more

Some good bargain options, but for me their zins and more costly wines are just too heavy handed and high alcohol fruit bombs. Kind of a must-see for a bigger Paso name though and a nice facility. While the price for the tastings here was great [free], the staff really don't seem to know the products that well. They would pour one wine and tell you it was another often it seems. They had a lot of people there and it was rapidly turning in to a "Shit Show" at the rate people were drinking. They have a couple of ancient video game machines in the corner for kids i guess, however they don't work very well. Other than that there was a ton of stuff for sale, think Cracker Barrel Country Store with free wine tastings. read more
