I could see how the owner could be taken for a bit gruff, but on the New Englander Scale of Gruffness, I found her to be palatable. I did like her rules on the seating, as in, bar area is not for waiting and no, two people can't sit at the 6-person table. Food: got the Wave, which was 2 eggs, toast, meat (I got bacon), and 3 small pancakes. Every breakfast place should have this EXACT plate on their menu. Husband had a ham and cheese omelette and enjoyed it. Would come here again. Nota Bene: this is actually located IN the bottom of Ocean something condos, don't be fooled. Also, don't type "Toast" into google maps for directions, it will take you out to the farthest point of Hull. So ridiculous. I've been to Toast twice and enjoyed it both times. If you like tea with your breakfast, this is a place for you. Not only do they give you an individual pot of water in a cute little tea pot, but they also give you a wide variety of teas to choose from, some of which are a little on the fancier side and not the type you normally stock in your home. Both times I dined here, I came as a twosome so we've never had to wait for a table and have never had anything but friendly and efficient service. My boyfriend once got the Wave (mentioned in a review below) and it was the perfect breakfast to get a little bit of everything. The omelettes here are huge and very filling. I've also had the Fireking French Toast from a local bakery and that was delicious as well. The only thing that I don't like about the place is that they portion out the syrup in a cup on your plate and if you want more, you have to pay extra. I stopped in for some quick breakfast before relaxing at the beach for a bit. Not too large of a place, but my wait for a seat at the bar was only about a minute. Had I wanted a table I probably would have had a ten minute wait. I had a female server in her 20's I would say, with curly light hair. She was friendly at first. (More on this later) After looking over the menu, I spotted Creme Brûlée French Toast with Caramelized sugar, and real maple syrup. I ordered that with some sausage links, and (as written on the menu) "freshly squeezed" orange juice. As I was waiting for my food I was staring at the containers of juice in the fridge, and noticed cartons of orange juice. My food came approximately 10 minutes later looking very yummy! When she brought the food I pointed, and asked her if that was the orange juice in the containers as I thought it was freshly squeezed. She replied Yes, and something to the effect of 'We can't squeeze it in the back' her expression was that of me speaking some insanely crazy idea. Numerous restaurants I frequent do in fact have in house freshly squeezed OJ, and it wasn't out of the ordinary around Boston. But in any event I was polite about the whole thing, and asked her if I could just have a water instead. At this point, she was noticeably disturbed, and seemed to get aggravated at me. She kind of walked away quick, and gave me water, with very quick communications for the rest of my time there. I would have gave 5 stars if she kept a smile, and that didn't happen. The wait seemed it would be long since we didn't get there until 11 on a Sunday morning, sat at the counter and were readily greeted by Jess. Drinks were quick and the food was delicious! A DEFINITE MUST! I've been going to this place for 6 years and I have never had a bad meal here. They have the best breakfast in MA. Some of the complaints on here relate to the owner which is unfair. She probably only gets upset when people are on their cell phones which is a major no-no in this small place. Your best bet is to go during the week or early in morning if you don't want to wait longer then a few minutes. Breakfast must haves: Cape Cod Homefries: chunks of potatoes with grated potatoes with peppers, onions, cheese and sausage. Best with a side of scrambled eggs. Blueberry pancakes are another great choice. Locals also rave about the "Burnt Toast". Lunch must haves: Turkey club sandwich with roasted turkey and just enough mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon to make it the best one I've ever had anywhere. My husband and I went here for the first time the morning of our anniversary because our local favorite in Hingham (Star) was super crowded. We didn't wait long to be seated which was great, the space was cozy and fun. We did however wait about 45 minutes for our meals. The server felt really bad, and she and the manager (I think) came by a few times to let us know it wouldn't be long. I ordered a waffle (ONE WAFFLE) and my husband and the "Wave". He loved his meal in the end, which helped, but my one waffle wasn't anything special and the bacon I ordered extra crispy was limp and soggy. The waitress offered to take it back but at that point we were both just ready to get out of there. The atmosphere is very friendly, the decor is interesting. I ordered the Vermont cheddar cheese omelet, and I must say very well made(compliments to the chefs). It is all fresh made food. The sign says "worth the wait". I roll my eyes. It's Sunday. I'm in Hull. Sunny with a bit of cloud on a late Oct day which is "off season" in this beach town. No space at the counter. Waitress who I later learned is the owner says at least 20 minute wait. I remember the sign's promise. 30 minutes later with an apology, sat at the counter, curt but friendly same waitress who I later find out is the owner. Ordered the White Omlette (filled with chicken sausage, spinach and cheese)and bottomless coffee and a giant blueberry muffin (because I didn't eat the night before). If you read this far, it WAS ABSOLUTELY worth the wait. The coffee was outstanding, I bought a bag to tag home. The omelette although look dried because of the slight crispiness of the egg white was soft and oozing of delicious cheese, sausage and spinach. That simple! The muffin I wolfed down in the first 5 minutes and I made no apologies about it. Yes! It was worth the wait and I will gladly go to Hull again and eat at Toast again. Toast. Saturday mornings on the South Shore would be bland without you! Assuming you can get a seat without waiting forever (this place is very popular), Toast is excellent. Every dish is a homemade homerun. It's the real deal. I had the Creme Brulee french toast last time I went. After I recovered from the sugar coma, I decided that this was positively the most lively and unique little breakfast dish I'd ever had. Yum. The Hot Chocolate is excellent, topped with real cream. The potatoes and omelettes are flavorful and fresh. Definitely worth a fan. Just need to figure out how to handle larger crowds! read more

This is the place I take any visitors for brunch. they love that it's on the ocean, not a chain and the place has character and the food is awesome. The service is not lightning fast but it's not slow or rude either. It just is that kind of place where they get to you when they get to you. If you want fast in and out go to Denny's - god help you. The place is small. There is always a wait if you go during brunch. Again. That's the way it is. During season, you could potentially starve or miss a meal. I see people with many kids and they seem to do OK, but I wouldn't choose it because of the wait to sit and the wait to be served. That's just me. The staff is also very knowledgeable about where to go or what to do in the area and the history - again a plus for people who are new or visiting the area - or if you like to chat up the locals. I hardly ever review on Yelp, but I just had THE WORST customer service experience of my life, and feel like this business deserves to be shut down. I went to breakfast with my children, and things seemed ok at first. We ordered our food, and it was a bit busy, not crazy, but enough so I was ok waiting a bit longer than normal. However, after about 20 min of waiting, I decided to just check in with the server and ask when our food might be out. She very rudely said something like " you just saw me bring those other peoples food out, so you know it's gonna be soon. You're gonna have to wait a little longer" and then walked away. My kids and I just sat there she'll-shocked for a minute. THEN, she came by the table and reiterated her rude response-totally unprovoked. After that, we can literally hear her talking trash about us to the other servers!! Still don't have food. Probably half an hour after we ordered, the food comes out. It was fine. Nothing great, but fine. I finally had enough, and decide to call the manager over. The MANAGER (who I believe is the owner) tells me that she saw the whole thing and the server was fine, that they are busy and I just need to "get over it". While I was speaking to the manager, my daughter sees the server MOCKING ME behind her and says so! Again, the manager rolls her eyes and walks away. I was in tears when we left. I usually tip well over 20 percent regardless of service when we go out because I served tables for many years and know how it is. For the first time, though, I wrote a big zero on the tip line. I cannot tell you how terribly they treated us, and for absolutely no reason. Do not ever go here. These people do not deserve any business. read more

The food was very good, the service was friendly busy and happy to accommodate our needs. There was a small wait but that was during the End of Summer Festival. I am now a frequent visitor and bring others with me to experience what they have to offer and that is "A great view of the ocean and fantastic food served with a Northerner attitude. Somebody always needs something from someone no matter what side of the counter we all sit on. So lets all try and be patient. The place is must be doing something right as it's always full of customers eating , having coffee, reading the paper at the counter or waiting for a table. My Little Girl and I used to come here for breakfast on the occasional Saturday, but won't do so again. Arrived at Toast Saturday AM, and were directed to the counter. I switched two adjacent chairs at the counter so that my Little Girl could have a cushioned seat rather than a wooden one, and saw a waitress appear bothered that I was doing so. Odd. Four minutes later, that same waitress started talking exasperatedly to a busgirl, whose eyes kept flickering up at me as they talked. I walked down and asked the waitress if she were complaining about me, and if so, what I had done something to offend her. She explained that she really doesn't like it when customers switch the chairs and wanted to know how I knew she was complaining about us. I considered explaining why I had Moved Two Chairs Around, but then realized that was ridiculous, and instead just said that we had come there to have a good breakfast and start our weekend off right, not realizing that they didn't want us there. She said that we weren't unwelcome and that it wasn't a Big Deal, but had no answer when I asked her if it weren't a Big Deal, then why was she complaining about us, and worse, why she was complaining about us right in front of us. We opted to leave. Point of irony: Toast has two signs up, one of which reads, "No whining," and another which alleges they won't tolerate rudeness from customers. This was a tiny place and not at all appealing. It was a bit crowded and there was a wait, which we expected for a Sunday morning. We went in to put our name down. An older lady took his name and gave us an wait estimate of 30 mins. We decided to waste time by checking out the nearby shops and walk along the beach, all of which took us about 15 mins. When we got back in to check on our table we were met by the same lady. She was downright rude and unapologetic about giving up our table and putting the blame on us for not being there when she supposedly called our name and said she will put us down again. I guess it is more difficult than that since mine was burnt on the outside and soggy inside. The linguica omelet had a few pieces of kielbasa (not linguica) in it and the rest was just dried scrambled egg with some cheese. The hash browns are just shredded potato. Nothing to write home about and it took a long time for the meals to come out. The coffee was good though and the rest of the servers seemed great. Overall, the food was below average, but the entire experience was made unpleasant thanks to the constant nagging from the MISERABLE owner talking down to employees and customers loudly throughout the visit. I've been here many times and here's another place I find difficult to rate. I can't give 3 stars (A-OK), so I rated it "Meh. I've experienced better." If there was a rating for 2.5 stars, I would have chosen that. The problem with the place is it's inconsistent. When they want to be good, they are excellent, but they aren't committed to serving excellent food. For example, when the waffles are cooked to order for you, it's excellent. But sometimes you'll get bad tasting waffles (soggy and not crispy at all) . . . I imagine they had left over waffles from the previous day which they frozed and de-frosted to serve the next day or two. Well, they saved money by not throwing it out, but it just damages their reputation, so during the week be careful on what you order. I am sure during the busy weekends that wouldn't happen. The food can be 5 stars which keeps me coming back despite their problems (more on that later). Burnt Toast is great! Their hash browns are great too, not too salty and just enough grease/butter. The secret is not to deep fry it like at McDonald's so they do take the time to make good food when they want to. And it's one of the few places around Boston that serves real maple syrup. Who wants to eat bad-for-you calorie laden pancakes or French toast with gross corn syrup instead of delicious maple syrup?? So the food can be 4 or 5 stars, or it can be a 1-2 stars. If you come during the weekend you should be all right. Now, you say I should have complained about my waffles? Well, if you see the owner's body language and facial expressions you know you'll get no where with that, and it wouldn't be worth discussing. Every time I go there, she's grumpy, under stress, and impatient. The first time I went to Toast I got the hint . . . with "no substitutions" and $1 charge for sharing food on the menu along with her posted "rules". It's hard to avoid her as she's also the hostess, but I just try stay out of her way, and talk to the wait staff if I need something. The wait staff service is very good. Side Note: Naturally, I also read reviews besides writing them, and laughed out loud that other reviews on tripadvisor.ca and on another site (can't recall) had reviews that said the owner is rude.
