Hubby and I were looking for a great place for our puppy to get his energy out and came across this large dog park. The park had 2 fenced-in play areas, 1 for small breeds and 1 that was the largest I've ever seen for large breed dogs! Midnight had an absolute blast playing with the other doggies!! I would HIGHLY recommend visiting this great dog park! The park was named after Toad Tunnels that are emptied into this area. Their was plenty of seating to lounge out while our pup socialized with other dogs and a doggie drinking fountain! This is a huge dog park!!!! One of my best friends lives in Davis so when I was in town I stopped here after seeing her to let my yellow Labrador run! She loved it! It's huge!!!! They have a big park and a little one! So many toys were already in the park! 10/10 can't wait to come back! read more

How lucky we are in Davis to have this beautiful dog park! And how lucky are all the doggies who visit. It is one of the biggest dog parks to which I have ever visited. Because of its size there is a big dog area and a small dog area. Now that is really cool. Today I am here with my neighbor's dog Toby! The sun is out but it is briskly cold. I remember coming once in the summer and it was very hot and unfortunately there is next to no shade. The good news is there are water fountains by the entrance and exit for both humans and pets :-). Many trash cans near by and plenty of pooper scoopers LOL. A dog's best friend :-). The few times I have been here I have never seen any dog fights and all the people seem to be very nice and respectful. This dog park is my everyday go to spot. Sometimes even twice a day! Only friendly dogs are welcome to this peaceful spot and it's a great opportunity to allow them to socialize with each other. It's a little hard to find the road off of second street because the sign is small. There are 2 separate dog areas here: a dog area reserved for smaller doggies that are 30lbs or less, and then there is the rest of the dog park for all dogs. Parking lot is sometimes full in the afternoons. It's an excellent spot to allow your dogs to run free and play together, or just throw the Frisbee for your own Fido. Keep in mind that you need to have control over your dog and make sure to watch their activity (please clean after your pets!) The nice part is that there are plenty of scoopers to help clean after your dogs in case you forgot a doggie baggie. Summary: Awesome dog park. read more

Sweet gated area to let your dog run "young...wild and free" all day long! There is a water fountain, complete with a dog-level spigot. Since first coming to this park, there has been a partition made for dogs under 30 lbs. that is separate from the general population. The shade at this park is limited, as there is one tree out "deep" into the park. The water fountain is located very close to the entrance/exit which has a double door convenient for leashing your pet(s). If grass is not your thing (though most of it is dead), there is a gravel track around the perimeter of the park. Every so often, one will find a pooper scooper and garbage cans are never too far. In the middle must have been at least 2 dozen dingy (not yellow) tennis balls left for your dog's entertainment. read more

Wonderful dog park. We found it doing a search of local dog parks as we were traveling through Davis. This is a very nice dog park with grass and separate areas for both large and small dogs. So many of the dog parks today are dirt or gravel, or weeds. It was refreshing to have a nice dog park to take our dogs for a break while traveling through. There are many regulars who come here daily and we met them, very friendly people. Didn't seem to be a very good water source for the small dogs but they did have a fountain on the big dog side. read more

Love this place! It is the largest dog park I've ever been to. They have both a small dog and a large dog section, although most people use the gigantic large dog section regardless of their dogs' size. I've had a great experience here with both of my babies. They love this place, and it's great for me because they have so much space to run. They go nuts until they tire themselves out, and then I get to sleep well because they knock out when I get home. Most people here are really nice, and their dogs are well behaved. I haven't had any super notable bad experiences with anyone or their pets. There is the occasional douchebag dog owner who thinks he knows better than everyone. Luckily, there is plenty of space to avoid such pretentious behavior. You can just walk to the other side of the park and be in your own bubble! Sometimes the sprinklers or the rain will create muddy puddles, so if you really hate a wet dog, be warned. Finding this place wasn't so bad but the only issue that I had was finding the entrance from the road since the entrance itself was super narrow. I've got a list of things I didn't like about this place: 1. Little dog park, you HAVE to walk through the large dog park. 2. No poop bags (so bring your own). 3. Grass is dry as dirt. 4. Max, my seven year old schnoodle, did what any new dog would do by walking around and smelling the new area out. When he saw the crate he lifted his leg and the lady tried to "shoo" him away, nearly slapping my dog. OK LADY, THIS IS A DOG PARK NOT A CRATE PARK. What a cute name! It's the only dog park in Davis! I occasionally come here with my bf to let our cute husky play around. She loooooooves dogs and she gets so happy when she's here. It's really awesome to see your dog's tail waging high up in the air and running freely. I just wish there's more amenities such as obstacle courses for the dogs. How does it work (for the new dog owners): Similar to other dog parks, bring your 4+ months old dog only after it has all its vaccination. Leash off once they enter the park. Everyone is friendly and just love to tired their dogs out with playful activities. No treats or food because the dogs will just get attracted to you. I connected with my dog Roxy's brother family and wanted to get them together for a play date. We picked this park based on the distance between our homes. I was pleasantly surprised at the size and how many dogs were out. My pup and I got there early and she did a perimeter jog and then started playing with a husky named Kona. Eventually we met up with her doggie brother and they got along great. They ran up and down the park too many times to count and played well with others! The only complaints I have about the park are: lack of shade and lack of water for the dogs. My pup kept going back and laying down under the tree on one side and then would have to run to the other side (about football field length) to get water and then run back (or she'd steal someone else's water that they brought). As I saw in some other reviews people complains about seating. There is limited seating BUT you shouldn't really be sitting down the whole time reading or playing on a laptop. I definitely recommend watching your pup and bringing a ball/frisbee to play with them! read more

This is my go-to dog park. The people are really nice and understanding of different dog behaviors. Not all dogs behave the same, and not all dogs who growl/bark do so to be aggressive (some are just playful talkative pooches) and the frequent folks here are very understanding of that. I say this because I've been to other dog parks where owners are a lot more stuck up, but not here. We were traveling and needed a respite for our active 3 year old Tilly. This was a little hard to find as we missed entrance the first time. What we found was a beautiful little oasis. Tilly thought she was in heaven. Lots of room to run and sniff. She found many dogs who wanted to all out run like she loves to do. When one dog got a little to rough and pinned her, the owner was right there to help. We spent the night in Dixon, just a few miles down the road and returned the next day for more doggie good times. I've been to my fair share of dog parks & beaches, Toad Hollow Dog Park is "alright." HAPA Boy had a great time @ the park. He gets along with just about every dog he meets. HAPA is AKC certified as a Therapy Dog, he has a very good disposition towards, people, dogs, cats, rabbits, and even fish. (Yes, fish, Newport Beach Pier, night fishing, a story for another time.) For being a bully-pit, HAPA is one of the gentlest dogs I've ever owned. For the most part, many of the dogs were well behaved and owners were keeping their four legged friends in check... 'For the most part. (Sigh) 'And then we have those select few, who walk around with their hands in their pockets, preoccupied updating there FB status, or simply too damn stupid to realize when to intervene when their dog needs to be corrected. I was surprised to see how many people allowed their dogs to mount or attempt to, without anyone breaking it up. Did I mention stupid people? Many of them reminded of the weekend warrior type who only take their dogs out on a Saturday or Sunday, no control, no accountability. (However, this was a weekday.) As I mentioned before, the HAPA gets a long with most dogs, sometimes he gets a little rambunctious & overzealous but nothing a time out won't remedy to calm him down . Some people have dogs, want dogs but have no clue on the structure & training involved in keeping a dog. A dog needs structure including a pack leader, an alpha, to establish limits & hold the dog accountable for his behavior. After being there for 15 minutes, it was clear that a number of owners weren't quite grasping the concept. However, there were some owners who were actually doing, what dog owners need to be doing, first off, diligently watching their pets. (Kudos) There were several instances when I saw a dog mount another dog and no one stepped up to intervene... 'Want to know a great way to get a fight started? Allow that kind of bahavior to continue and you'll find out quick, fast, & in a hurry. When you have a group of twenty or so dogs in such close proximity, things can escalate quickly. (Pace mentality = frenzy) One dog tried mounting HAPA Boy a couple of times, thankfully the owner was nearby & paying attention. She quickly grabbed hold of her dog & corrected him. I thanked her for watching her dog and acting appropriately. She told me what I had already concluded, some owners there have little to no control over their dogs. In another instance, a german shepherd attempted to do the same with the HAPA. I briefly waited, the owner wasn't around to correct the dog. So, I grabbed the dog by the back of the collar, gave it a quick jerk, and yelled, "No!" The german shepherd, looked back @ me and quickly walked away. A guy who looked @ me as if I had just kicked HIM in his fellahs, "Hey, if people aren't going to watch their dog, I have no problem doing it for them." It's all fun & games until your dog is injured and/or someone is suing you for damages. (Sigh) Blaming the dog is like blaming the car in an accident... Nope, it's the owner who those accolades go to. You don't take a child to a public park then spend the next 45 minutes looking down at your phone or chatting with your girlfriend the entire time, paying no attention to the child. So, why wouldn't you do the same w/a dog. After all, dogs are like perpetual children, a good example of the Peter Pan Complex, never growing up. Some people want dogs but do not take the necessary steps/measures in creating a structured lifestyle for the four legged, family member. (i.e. - Basic obedience training; puppy etiquette) A dog is NOT a thing of convenience, it's a conscience choice to care for this innocent life/soul that you are solely accountable for. Basically, YOU are their "god." Yeh, that's it, Rico Suave... 'Strut around in your Timberland loafers, $150 sunglasses, cardigan sweater, with your hands in your pockets... You're @ a dog park, not @ a photo shoot for Abercrombie & Fitch, @sshats. This isn't Orange County and you're not a "housewife." ('OR are you?) I used to live in the Laguna Beach/Dana Pt area in South OC, I've seen enough trendy, hipster, bulls*t to recognize it. Hey, If you're too worried about getting dirt on your hands or a smudge on your tan dockers, one question, "What the hell are you doing @ a dog park?" Overall, the park is okay... 'Not great. This place is a godsend for dog owners & dogs! Located across from the train tracks on 2nd street, Toad Hollow dog park is a beautiful fenced off GIANT area for dogs to run wild. There's a small parking lot right in front of the fenced off area, or you can choose to park on 2nd street and walk down the little slope to the dog park. The thing i love about this park (besides the fact that it's fenced off) is the small dog area. Yes, there is a fenced off small dog area right inside of the big dog area. That way my small dog can go up to the fence and sniff the big dogs without me having to worry he'll get smooshed under some big giant dog & there are lawn chairs set up in the grassy area for the dog owners to sit on and watch their dog run. I was experiencing some serious road rage since I was stuck in traffic for two hours and it would take another two hours to get home. So after screaming at the top of my lungs in frustration, I found this dog park since I had two pups in the car and we all needed a break. I love the size of the big dog park but this time we used the small dog park. Under the shade the grass was cool and someone had set up a few bowls of water which was nice (I did bring my own iced jug). My pups were able to stretch their legs and my kid had a nice time watching all the big dogs and jumping around. I zen-ed out and calmed down pretty fast once I cooled down both physically and mentally. There were tons of balls of all sizes for dogs to play with. Tons of people started arriving after 5. I'm grateful for this park. I was ready to murder someone. read more

I might change my rating after I have visited more dog parks but so far this one is my favorite. First off, it has grass. Not sand, grass. Second plus, it has a fenced off area for small dogs. And they have a double fence. My pom Penny (fun alliteration to say) prefers this dog park to all others. At least that is the thought bubble I imagine as she is yapping and running herself in exhaustive circles. Everyone who goes is very respectful and clean up after their pups. The best dog park in Davis! It's big, relatively clean and well taken care of, has running water fountains (although they shut the water off in the winter so the pipes don't freeze), has trash cans/pooper scoopers, and has separate play areas for big/small dogs. I take my pup here about 3-4 times a week because she can't get enough wrestling and chasing with her doggie friends. I come here so much I can pretty much recognize every dog in Davis! The best time to come is around 4:30pm on weekdays because that's when there are the most dogs out. My dog is super friendly and loves playing with the other dogs, so we try to come during high traffic times. I guess if you have a shy dog or you want to play in private, you might want to come a bit earlier in the day when it's not as crowded - it can be overwhelming. There's a nice big trail along the edge of the dog park so you can walk around and get a little exercise for yourself. I often see people going on jogs around the park with their dogs. Only problem is that there's isn't much shade, so I bet the scorching hot summers are not as fun out here. Just like at any dog park, there can be some aggressive dogs here. I have had issues with one or two dogs in particular that like to bite and play a little too rough. Most of the dog owners here are excellent and will intervene if there are any problems with their dogs, but there is the exceptional idiot who stands around chatting to friends or on the phone while her dog is beating up on mine. So just be aware of what your dog is doing at all times since it helps keep the park safe & clean! read more

Davis is probably one of the most unfriendly dog friendly cities I've lived in. So finally getting this doge park is the best thing for my hyper German shepherd/border collie. Beware of the rain and late fall/winter season they'll close the park for weeks on end. Can get really muddy so just be aware. There's two sections, one for smaller dogs which has benches and more social than the larger area for medium and large dogs. Also I've had only one problem with another owner here (rating isn't affect by this encounter) but her dog was fixated on my anti social border collie so my baby wanted nothing to do with this dog. The dog would nip at my dogs ankles. I even moved to the far end of the park and this dog spots her from across the park and runs up to mine and attacks her. My dog cries so I run over. The owner immediately grabs her dog and leaves the park without even talking to me. #Cesar read more

This is a great dog park! Go around 5PM -- that is when there are the most dogs! My boyfriend & I took our dog here and he loved it! There are many different breeds of dogs too :). This place has a small dog area for 30 lbs or less and a big dog area. The reason this is 3-stars is because there is only one bench for people to sit at in the small dog area. There are also not that many amenities for the dogs. Basically it is a gated area for the dogs to play with each other and run around. They do provide water for the dogs though, so that is an added bonus. Be sure to bring your own bags! And maybe a book or laptop to accompany you while your dog plays. read more

I can appreciate this place so much because of my experiences with other dog parks around california, but the overall the dogs are pretty well trained and social. My two small dogs love going to this dog park! The dogs and I really appreciate the small dog park area, which allows my little dogs to hang out with some similar-sized buddies. If you have a little dog that is afraid or intimidated by the bigger breeds, you can always opt for the small dogs area (30lbs and under). One thing that some other reviewers have touched on is the seating issue. I've been going to this dog park for almost two years so I remember when they used to have the simple plastic chairs scattered around, ample seating for 10+ people. That worked fine. Now, they are ever-so-slowly switching to stone benches. So far, the little dog section has one bench and that's the extent of the seating. Lame. They probably should have left the old chairs until completely replacing all the benches. So bring your own chair or be content standing. read more

I love bringing my dog here. This dog park is completely fenced off. So you do not have to worry about your dog running out onto the street or running away. All of dog owners are usually pretty courteous, picking up after their own dogs. And at the dog park, there are two fields separated by a fence. One field is for big dogs, and the other field is for the smaller dogs. The grass is usually well groomed. There aren't any potholes so you don't have to worry about you or your dog twisting an ankle. There's plenty of space for the dogs to run around. On the left near the entrance of the dog park, there is a water fountain for the dogs and humans. I find it so cute and very thoughtful of the city to provide us with such a well-maintained park for the dogs. read more

Few cities love animals as much as Davis, so why isn't there a nicer dog park? Everything about this dog park is average. There is only one large, maybe even huge, area for dogs to be off leash. I've always preferred dog parks that have separate areas for large and small dogs. It helps prevent conflict because the small dog owners who are always endlessly complaining about how their dogs are being bullied can go to the small dog area and search for new things to complain about. Small dogs can still go in to the large dog area if they aren't intimidated by the bigger dogs and everyone is better off. My German Shepherd always played well with the other dogs here, but having to listen to other owners argue was enough for me to want to choke myself with a leash. Anyone who has spent a summer in Davis knows how oppressive the heat can be, so why are there almost no shaded areas in the entire park? I can't understand why this park wasn't better designed to deal with long hot summer days. Besides the lack of shade, there is only one area where dogs can get fresh water. The parking lot here is way too small and on a busy day the lot gets backed up and people start parking like idiots. The city of Davis needs to step up and make a couple of basic improvements to this park. This place has a ton of potential, and those changes would turn this into the type of dogpark you would expect from such a pet friendly city. read more

Large, spacious, well-maintained, and clean off-leash dog park. I love this dog park. When I was living in the area, I would take my little guy (he's 12 pounds) to the park about once a week. During the hotter months, I would go around sunset. There are garbage cans situated around the perimeter of the park for easy poop dumpings. I recommend bringing your own plastic bags to pick up after your dog though. Sometimes people bring extra bags and tie them to the fence at the entrance, but sometimes there aren't enough bags. Hence, just to be safe, bring your own. :) The people who go to this park obviously are avid dog lovers, and you can tell how sincerely they love and care for there dogs. I've met people who've come as far as Roseville just to go to this dog park. That's gotta tell you something, since Roseville is a good 30-minute drive, with no traffic! I like how the park doesn't segregate little dogs from the big ones. The park is basically a big fenced-in square/rectangle. I understand some people out there are afraid of their little ones getting trampled on, but I've never had that happen to my dog. Just keep a good eye out, and he/she will be ay-okay. By far, this has been my most favorite dog park of all time. I'm sad that I don't live by here anymore. :( read more

in 2010 I would have said a 3 and half stars but now..the money that was spent into park in 2011 was a HUGE WASTE- This park was much nicer before they spent thousands of dollars on the dozen or so benches. Who put 90 percent of the benches in direct sunlight away from the trees where nobody wants to sit? The chairs that where there worked fine before...no money for waste bags for the dogs, improved irrigation or the entry (should be all concrete too sandy and muddy currently) but plenty for unnecessary benches.?? Who took all the water buckets out of the park? The one faucet for both the small and large dog area is insufficient..the buckets offset that. Not really a fan of small dogs..but kick down a gate entrance for the small dog area..half the people freak out and make some kinda issue out of walking there "little precious" from the entry in the big dog area to the small dog area.. Go city of Davis civil engineering on your "plus 1" economic spending, hell its in the budget lets just thrown down some benches! We wont be visiting much as this park has gone downhill. Really large park. Half of it is fenced off for repairs, but even with half closed, it is a decent size. The area for small dogs is about the same as for the larger ones. Oddly, the entrance is the same double gate and there is a separate entrance from inside the large to inside the small. My friend told me it floods in the winter and they close down the park. Trees in corner for shade breaks While close to the freeway - it doesn't overpower. Con's Water refill station is too far away from the open area. The owners who don't pay attention to their dog being mean to mine. (yeah I'm talking to you Mr. & Ms. German Sheppard owner) The owners who don't help you get your dog's toy away from their possessive dog. Not it's not funny to watch me chase your dog! I love to come here and bring my Shiba Inu pup! I wish there were more Shiba Inu owners out here. This place is fantastic! They have gates all over, so you know your dogs wont be too far from your sight. Especially Shiba Inu! You don't want them off the leash and not knowing where they go in an open area. Often times, this place is closed due to flooding. As you all know, Davis has been raining nonstop these few months-- even during the Summer. So this place is always closed :( One thing that didn't make this place into a 5-star, according to me, is the gate. If they have a separate opening gate for the little dogs and the big dogs area, it'd be perfect. My dog LOVES to bully small dogs-- that makes him feel high and mighty, I guess. Often times, my Shiba Inu would wait at the door and start to play around with whatever size dogs entering in. Small dogs tend to be scared and stayed at the "off-leashing/leash" area instead of coming in. Otherwise, this place is beautiful. It has a water fountain for the dogs & humans, shading area for us humans, and plastic bags for their poops. I still remember when they used to have a big bowl for the dogs to share their drinking water. However, be careful for the bigger dogs. Sometimes the owners don't keep watch at their dogs and the medium dogs get bullied by the bigger dogs. Please keep watch of your dogs at all times. One of my friends' dog was bullied and hurt over a roughhouse playing by a bigger dog. Nothing serious, but he was just limping for a couple of minutes. Anyways, lets end this review on a happier note. This place, aside from that tiny incident, is amazing! The grass is mostly dry and clean. People take care of their own dogs' leftovers and are responsible for their dogs. Overall, I like it. It's a 4.5 over 5 star. read more
