I hate fried or crispy foods and I can't eat cheese. I was content leaving Oaxaca with out eating a tlayuda. Coming back from my appointment I share this information with my taxi driver. He insisted I eat one before I leave. So that's how I ended up at tlayudas el negro. I had three choices of meat, the tasajo is a tougher meat so I decided to get one with cecina. Other options were costilla -ribs or chorizo. I was able to modify it and have it with very little cheese and I asked if they could not fry it too much. I ordered the enmolada for 120 pesos. The mole was good but it had a very thin layer of it, tiny pieces of meat couldn't taste the flavor and the tlayuda was extra crispy and burnt but it didn't bother me that much but I didn't enjoy this dish. I'm glad I tried it and you may like it. If you get a chance try one from the Mercado or the street vendors. If your gut can handle it. What I really liked was the garnish on top! Yes just this one or two herb pieces was delicious. It gave the food such a distinct flavor I liked the aftertaste. The herb is called chipeche. Service was great and there's live music, someone was playing the violin. I will not be back but you should try it. If you're a drinker I think you have a good chance of enjoying the food and atmosphere. read more

Absolutely loved this meal - this tlayuda comes all folded into a quesadilla type meal and they'll even cut it for you to share. We got the chorizo and arrachera and it comes all wrapped up the cheese and beans. They also have 4 salsas that are amazing and elevate this to quite an incredible meal. If you can get past the racist logo, which I didn't notice until I sat down, this place is pretty good and very reasonably priced. They almost exclusively have tlayudas on the menu, which I ordered with Cecina (129 pesos). I also had a Michelada. They didn't have corona or Victoria oddly, so I had it with Heineken. A true fusion of cultures! Tlayuda was great with a ton of cheese. I loved the salsa that came on the side. Wouldn't have minded some salsa de cebollas, but that's alright. Bathrooms were a bit rough but otherwise the place was clean and spacious. Food came out VERY quickly. read more

I got the tlayuda with arrachera (beef). The veggies as a nice crunch and the pickled onion/chilies and range of salsas add to the flavor. The location is off a beaten path from the city center but it's worth the walk. It's a place visited by locals! read more

We enjoyed the tlayudas and the service from Jose so much that we went twice! Yelp shows that they open at 3, but both times we went, it was closer to 12:45/1:00 and we were served. Jose made it clear, however, that the place gets super busy at night when they have live music. Tlayuda with Chorizo is nicely priced at 129p and plenty for two to share! Load up on the spicy salsa, guac sauce, and the pickled onions/peppers! Cerveza is wonderfully priced at 30p and if you ask nicely, you can get a basic espadin mezcal, as well. (Didn't keep the receipt with the price on it). As people have said, it's a bit out of the center of the city, but it's a nice ~15-20 minute walk or you can grab a taxi if you're so inclined. It's definitely worth it for such a hearty lunch with wonderful service! read more

Love this place that was recommended by a friend, is kind of a karaoke restaurant with great food and service , the tlayudas were very good and way better than the Netflix la chinita . I'm almost embarrassed to say that I came here because I was hesitant to enter the building when I saw the restaurant mascot on the wall. It' very racist as is the name of the restaurant. The only reason I went was because I was invited to meet friends I made on the trip and we were told the restaurant had a nightly interpretation of the guelaguetza. The food was poor quality and the entertainment mediocre. With so many places in Oaxaca this was a poor choice. read more

When flying into Oaxaca, I sat next to a man who was on his 4th visit in 4 months to Oaxaca. He told me about tlayudas, which would be difficult to find outside of Oaxaca, as the oversized corn tortillas are special to this state. Wary of having to negotiate prices at carts and in the markets, we turned to Yelp to find a sit-down restaurant that served tlayudas and we found Tlayudas el Negro. We ventured on foot from the main area of Oaxaca to TeN, along sidewalk-less streets. We saw the smoke emanating from the grill first, and I knew this was it. A man saw us and ushered us in. We were seated immediately at a round table where live music was playing and the smoke from the grill gently wafted in the air. Menus were placed before us. Requests for drink orders were made. Our server returned with our bottle of water and we ordered 1 tlayuda with dried beef, having read a tip that 1 tlayuda would fill 2 bellies. We also ordered flan. The dried beef was actually quite tender. I had expected a beef jerky-like consistency, but was pleasantly surprised it was more like a thin steak. I appreciated the pickled onions as a condiment. The flan was OK, much like the flan I buy in the refrigerated Mexican desserts section at a international grocery store in the US. Overall, TeN was a great locals joint, where basic Spanish will get you by, or do what I do at a dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong: point at menu items! This a popular place and well known by the locals. It was recommended by our tourist guide. I'm glad we took his word. Due to the fact that the restaurant lyes in a residential area, it was hard to find a parking spot. The restaurant was nearly packed but still got seated quickly. Our server greeted us and took our beverage order quick then we had plenty of time to look over the menu. The menu was not that big, the tlayuda is the main dish you just got to decide the choice of meat and any sides or extras that you may desire. I loved the cheese they use in their tlayudas, but I guess you'll see that almost everywhere in Oaxaca. The restrooms could use a renovation, they need some work done as soon as possible. FYI. If paying with credit card, they will add 3% surcharge so you may want to carry cash with you instead. read more

Tlayudas el Negro is a bit of a walk, but it is worth the trip from town. The large restaurant has a grill up front and a large and rustic dining room with folding chairs around tables. There was live music on Friday night, and he was pretty good. The food was incredible. We ordered a Tlayuda Con Chorizo. The tlayuda is fresh and the cheese here is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! It is so fresh. The chorizo is wonderful and is served on the side as crisp links. I enjoyed every bite of the crunchy tortilla with black beans and melted cheese. I used lots of pickled onions. We also ordered grilled nopales y cebollas, which were a tasty side. Our entire meal was 150 pesos (including aguas fracas - DM had te y lemon which I do not recommend but I had jamaica which was wonderful). Yup, that is about $8. And totally amazing and very filling (one tlayuda for two people is plenty). Great and friendly service and lovely locals round out the experience. read more

A must while in Oaxaca. I didnt know how far it was from my hotel, so it was quite the walk.. nonetheless I was happy about the walk after eating half a tlayuda and a tostada. My favorite was actually the tostada de chorizo. I want to go back just for that tostada! It was the most flavorful tostada I've ever had. On our recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico we were recommended to this place by our Airbnb host and we were very happy that we chose to try out this establishment. When I go back I would definitely go back and eat here again! I've even recommended them to family. The food was great and the price was very reasonable. They don't take card so have cash /pesos. Today I tried another Tlayuda place: Tlayudas el Negro. I have driven by this place several times and today I decided to check it out. It is a really big space with loads of tables and chairs, they also have a roof area. The service was very quick and efficient. I had a Tlayuda with Tasajo, there are not that many ways to make a Tlayuda but what is different at this place is that you can ask for your Tlayuda to be rolled up just like a hard taco roll. This way makes it a lot easier to eat and less messy. The Tlayuda was good and the Tasajo also. After 4-5 pm you can phone to order and they will deliver it at your house in the centre!! What is also interesting is that they mention in several places (you will see it on the wall in my photo) that if you do not like your Tlayuda it's free, if your waiter doesn't attend you well he will have to pay the bill and if the cook burns your Tlayuda, he will have to pay for it. Had an awesome dinner here last night thanks to Yelp reviewers giving good reviews. The place was packed and my friend and I were the only gringos in the place, which was a great sign. We just had tostadas and mezcal but they were damn good tostadas and the mezcal hit the spot as well. (Side note: they don't have beer or other alcohol, just mezcal.) Nothing really special about tlayudas in general. Just did it to check off on my oaxacan food list. And the dried slice of beef on top didn't make it any better. It's basically an oversized tortilla with a bland cheese and bland sauce that's dry cooked over the grill. A bit dry and dull. Not really worth the walk across town for. read more
