    # I Brought My Entire Life to the DPS. They Needed Two Things. 10/10…read more - NOTE CROSS POSTED ON GOOGLE a I have not lost my driver's license in 25 years. Last week? Happened. We're not talking about it. We're moving forward. I'm currently laid off and job hunting, so a valid ID is not optional. Because I didn't have my audit number, I couldn't renew online -- I had to go in person. To the DPS. Voluntarily. Now, I'm a policy nerd. Terms and conditions are my bedtime reading. So you'd THINK decoding exactly what documents I needed would be easy. It was not. By the time I was done, I walked into that office with: my birth certificate, Social Security card AND the receipt for requesting it, my lease, my high school diploma, college transcripts, degree, graduation photos, and my college ID. **I am 45 years old. I brought my academic career as a character witness for my own existence.** Here's the thing though -- the staff at South General McMullen did not need any of that energy from me because THEY had it handled. The office was organized, efficient, and genuinely warm. People were greeted at the door, directed immediately, and when someone got frustrated about a missing document, staff stepped in calmly and gave them a real next step. No chaos. No attitude. Just competence with a smile. I waited about an hour and 20 minutes for my number. Once called? Window in 5 minutes, done in another 5. They also accept Apple Pay (saved my life -- lost my wallet too, it was a week), there are outlets near the entrance for charging your phone, and if you opt in for text reminders you can check in 30 minutes early from your phone. Also: they may already have your documents on file from your Real ID. Ask before you panic. You might not need the graduation photos. The DPS is one of the few places in America where every age, background, and tax bracket ends up in the same room. It's actually a beautiful little snapshot of community -- and this staff keeps it running beautifully. Huge thank you to everyone at this location. Y'all are awesome, efficient, and lowkey hilarious. The banter alone made the wait worth it. *-- A woman who showed up with her transcripts and left with a glow-up ID photo. No notes.*

Time to renew those plates don'cha know?! Walked in, no…read morewaiting for a ticket to be seen. Got my ticket & called up to window 13. Knew it was a good day then! *fav number & all. The young lady was just returning from lunch. Again, good timing. Everyone is happy with a full belly. Handed her my paperwork & asked if I could get a placard to have when I ride with others. She stated my "plates" were coming up as temporary. (Which is not possible, they do not issue PLATES as temporary, only the red placard.) I showed her my proof that my disability is permanent. She gave me my sticker. I went to my car, pulled out the paperwork from last year, & lo & behold I had renewed 8n thr exaxt date a year before. Too funny. Well, it also had my orthopedic surgeon's medical information on my permanent disability. I marched right back in; again no waiting. I was merely informed to go see the same lady. I did. The guy she was assisting Was having issues with his handicapped plates as well. About 30 minutes after I sat down, she was ready for me. She called her supervisor over, showed my permanent paperwork. He disappeared with my paperwork. She vanished, then came back with a blue placard for me, & apologized for the error. I told her no harm, no foul. It happens. Absolutely excellent customer service at this location, & that's why I only go to this location. The young lady that worked at window #13 on the afternoon of 11 June 2021 is a fantastic employee. She never huffed, rolled her eyes, or became frustrated. She handled everything the incorrect system handed her with ease & grace. Great location.

I pre-ordered custom license plates for my vehicle several months ago. About 3 months ago, I…read morereceived an email saying it is being made and sent to the Bexar County office in approximately 3 weeks, and that I will receive notification via phone, once it is ready for pick up. 2 months go by and I haven't received an email or a phone call, so I try to call the number in the email. I understand we are in a pandemic, and expected longer phone times. However, they just don't answer the phone, period! I finally had time to just go to the office today, assuming the plates have arrived, to attempt to pick it up. On arrival, there are two lines, one for vehicle purposes, and one for property tax purposes. The separate lines all were marked for parties to stand 6 feet apart and the front attendant would let a few people go from the vehicle line and then a few people go from the property line. I'm assuming that once you got inside, one side of the building was for vehicles and one was for property, so alternating who go to go inside didn't really matter. I was directed to go towards the right side, so I assume property was on the left side. Once inside, you get asked if you have any Covid symptoms and your temperature gets taken. Although the waiting area looked full, everyone was properly spaced and didn't take too long to get called. Luckily, my plates were there and didn't take too long to pay the difference in registration dates and get out of there.
