On November 3, 2024,…read more we were delighted to find a gas station and a restroom. Since we had been driving for more than several miles from the city of Mojave destination. We came across this gas station and not only that. We were able to find some hot chicken and thee best potato wedges ever. I believe Chester's Chicken is a big deal in Trona with the small towns residents and travelers. The few folks working there were so cheerful. I just wish we asked a few more questions from the locals. It's always a plus. We filled up on gas , sat and ate in our vechile not only that we went back in for some honey buttered biscuits. I devoured those on the road to furnace creek city. On the return trip back to Los Angeles as I cannot check in twice. We filled up on gas, restroom and bought a few souvenirs.

The nearest town to Alabama Hills is Lone Pine. So we drove to Lone Pine and spotted Gardner's True Value Hardware. I was skeptical at first, but boy was I wrong! This store has EVERYTHING! I have no idea how they have managed to collect such large variety of stuff in one small store, but they have. And the people working in the store are very helpful. Every time I walk in, someone asks if I need help. Not the obligatory "Can I help you?" as they're walking away, but the kind where they actually stop, listen, and help you find exactly what you're looking for. They don't just point toward aisle 12 and wish you luck--they'll walk you right to it. Sometimes paying a dollar more is worth saving 30 minutes of wandering around a giant warehouse. Karl's proves that great service never goes out of style. It's the kind of place where you're treated like a neighbor instead of a barcode.

Given that the Mineral Society stages vehicles before each field trip in the lot next door, this Family Dollar easily became the most popular place in the valley. Of course the lines were insane at this time, but the employees (while bewildered) handled it with ease. Clean. Tidy. Nicely stocked. Decent prices. If you're in Trona (although, not sure why you would be) this is the place to stop for all your dollar store needs... never mind that it's the only place to stop.
