I've been wanting to visit this classic diner in Charlottesville for awhile now and definitely enjoyed my time. The line was out the door but we were actually seated not too long after we arrived. Everyone was kind and attentive and you can definitely feel the hospitality throughout the restaurant. I came for breakfast and tried their Western omelette with house potatoes and toast while my boyfriend tried their French toast combo with eggs and bacon. Breakfast at Tip Top, which is actually rather close to the very top of this hill/mountain in Charlottesville. It's easy to miss driving past but the GPS does work. I had a simple cheese omelet and it was great, but the winner here are their potatoes. Delicious, firm, soft, tasty. A very tiny amount of ketchup and they were perfect. It's a diner, for sure. My friends and I came to this restaurant before leaving Charlottesville from a girls trip. We were so excited due to the great reviews. What a joke. Before writing this review, it gives you a disclaimer to be kind because of COVID and staffing. Staffing was not the issue here. Took us 15 min to receive our drinks, never received a refill (one person from my party had to ask for one), one of the orders was wrong, and nobody came to check on us after receiving our food. It was incredibly frustrating to watch our waitress be so tentative to other tables besides ours. My first experience a year ago wasn't good, but after some convincing, I gave it another try with my friends since they all rave about Tip Top. You get what you expect which is decent diner food for a reasonable price. The cheese used for the omelette overwhelmed the balance of flavors, my toast was dripping in grease, and the meal felt really heavy. Overall, very decently priced diner style food with a lot of homely feel factors. Portion sizes were also enough for 1.5 or 2 meals. We ordered takeout consisting of: Lasagne - sauce was perfectly balanced with a little bit of tang and a little bit of sweet. The overall construction with the layers of ground beef and ricotta cheese was delightful. Eggplant spaghetti - very tasty marinara sauce and the eggplant was done well. Chicken slouvaki platter - was good but not the most amazing I've had. The chicken was a bit thicker cut and as a result dry. The pita bread was good. Also came with thick cut fries. Overall, I was very satisfied with platter. I would visit them to try other foods. Definitely like their marinara sauce a lot! Chicken shawarma - decent again and very similar to the slouvaki dish. Chicken was little better than the slouvaki. Calamari - came in a thicker coating of batter than I'd normally expect. Made it look and taste more like onion rings. Have eaten breakfast here many times and it is always very good. Afternoon stop for some dessert and coffee as we have admired the desserts in their display case many times in the morning. I ordered apple pie with ice cream and coffee and my wife ordered the chocolate mousse cake. The cake was delivered quickly and was good. My apple pie and coffee came and the pie had been heated as requested but the ice cream was the smallest scoop ever seen particularly for an additional 2.95. The pie was just okay with few apples and much crust. The coffee was hot but not particularly fresh but after a few sips I saw what was some kind of food residue around the inside of the cup. I showed it to one of the ladies working the front and she took the cup and I said I did not want a replacement. If you're looking for classic no fuss no frills diner breakfast and fast and friendly service, this is the place for you. The servings are huge and the prices are very reasonable for what you get! Our favorite are 1) the blueberry pancakes which have whole fresh blueberries cooked right in the fluffy pancake and are quite filling and 2) corned beef hash - if you like salty and a little more texture without getting too dried out, recommend asking for it to be crispy. Vegetable oil margarine is given, not real butter French toast was egg bread. Gravy on biscuits had no sausage and taste like it was from a can, also Luke warm. I'm so glad I discovered Tip Top because you get such good value for your money. I ordered the Old Fashioned French Toast and the Two Eggs, Any Style, which came with home fries and biscuits. The portions turned out to be massive so I had some leftovers, which meant I ended up paying less than $15 for two meals! My friend got The Pancake Special and subbed in chocolate chip pancakes, which only cost her $1.50 or so more. There's also plenty of parking available, which is a big plus for me. However, it was our first time going there and we didn't realize that you had to pay at the counter, so we were waiting for a while for our waitress to come back. I tried the banana and walnut pancakes, a mountain of food that set me up for a hard day's work. That's why you also see nurses, road workers, students, and other hard workers in here at 6am--they know value and good food when it comes along. Our second outing to Tip Top. We are from out of state and had heard good things about this restaurant. The first time we went it was ok. Yesterday was not so good. First of all, the place is dirty. The bathroom is disgusting. The food was not very good- the home fries were like mush.. totally inedible. I ordered toast with no butter- it was buttered. Same mistake last time.
