The key to any successful restaurant is Food+Service. Think about it....you can have great food & crappy service and it will leave a bad impression. You can have great service and crappy food and even if they gave the food to you free - it just wouldn't work. Unfortunately TIO's suffers from great food and really crappy service. Today we sat at the bar. The bartender was busying herself with her side-work and barely could take time to discuss the menu or drinks. Missed opportunity. We ordered chips and salsa to start followed by chicken and carne asada fajitas. We each had a margarita. My husband a frozen mango and me a Cadillac. Chips and salsa were warm & fresh. Fajitas sizzling and delicious. The fajitas only came with 3 tortillas. I asked for mire and also additional salsa. The bartender forgot - we had finished when they finally came. Shame food is good but crappy service I cannot forgive. I would be forgiving "IF" it were busy - but it wasn't. I very rarely post a negative comment- however, this past Thursday June 12 I went there for lunch with a colleague. We decided to sit by the bar since there was no one in the place. The Bartender had his back towards us for a good 10 minutes before he came over. We ordered two beers: we also ordered naked wings, and Chicken Nachos with extra jalapeño. The food arrived fairly quickly, however, the wings had a sauce on them and there was very little chicken and NO jalapeños. We questioned the bartender regarding the wings and he said they only come one way. Then why didn't you mentioned this to us. I visited Tio Taco on a Saturday afternoon to attend a friend's birthday party and had a good time. Food is tasty, staff is friendly and the drinks are good. I gave this place a final try years later... it still hasn't changed. The drinks are horrible... nothing is ever mixed well here. Quite possibly the worst margaritas, Sangria and Mojito's I have ever had anywhere. As for the food, the chips have super fake lime seasoning and other garbage on it. The corn appetizer comes out ice cold same like last time. The entrees almost were passable but of course they had to ruin the dish. Skirt steak entree with plantains. The plantains were horrid. They added sugar and cinnamon and it was like eating gross french toast. The steak was cooked medium rare and was fine and came out warm. This was the only thing that actually was decent. First time here, we sat at the bar for happy hour. The happy hour menu was not very extensive. They had a special for a margarita flight typically, I drink on the rocks. They had a sample flight, which included four types and I don't drink spicy, but they would not let me substitute the jalapeño out for a different kind. I was told that I could order it as is and just not drink the jalapeño. Why would I just throw money away like that? That kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I ended up just getting a regular margarita. First one was pretty good. Second was terrible and taste straight like sour mix. I had my friend try it too, and she agreed it was awful. We also got some food. the chicken flautas were pretty good, nachos were kind of boring and the wings were good. Also got churros which we liked. Overall it just wasn't a consistent experience. I prefer a restaurant which offers a little more flexibility with its customers. read more

Went for Happy Hour on a Monday. Margaritas are half price ($5.00) on Monday. They were pretty good. The food was Happy hour priced. ($8-$10). The food was good. The birria dipping sauce was not great. Taste a little like marinara sauce. Everything else was very good. The server kept forgetting our stuff-not a huge deal-however considering it was a dead Monday...this shouldn't be the case. The ambiance is nice. Bar area is a favorite. I dined at Tio Taco + Tequila Bar today for the first time. My waiter Antonio was great, and he told me about his favorite dishes on the menu. I had the Mango Habanero Shrimp for my appetizer, and I thought it was mediocre. The sauce tasted nothing like mango as it was described on the menu. I wouldn't order that again. For dinner I ordered a Chicken Tinga Taco and a Fish Taco. The Chicken Tinga Taco was very good, and the Fish Taco was so delicious! The Fish Taco was packed with Mexican flavor, and was the better of the two. For dessert I had the Rum Banana Cheesecake Chimichanga which was amazing! You can't leave without ordering it! It's a warm and inviting place, kind of reminds you of the old TGIF when they were new and hot. There is a nice bar section and some TVs to watch sports, and comfortable seating at various tables and booths. The service was outstanding. Our server was helpful, polite, did not hover over the table, which in itself is an art form - hard to find a balance between annoying and helpful. She did the latter. But the food was disappointing. The chicken wings came out cold. Literally. It was as if they just took them out of the refrigerator and brought to the table. Other dishes were beyond greasy, which dulled every sensible taste bud one had. Still, the cake for dessert was delicious but that was balanced out by the disappointing churros which were nothing but grease and oil. Definitely room for improvement at Tios. read more

I sincerely caution those who cannot eat gluten in coming here despite what seems like a solid gluten sensitive menu. I am fairly certain that something they said was gluten free was not at all. I'm a physician and have been eating gluten free for 12 years. The only times I have any major issues are when there is a substantial amount of gluten in something (ie, I don't have issues with minor things like cross contamination from shared fryers) from a large scale error. I had my usual symptoms of a major gluten ingestion shortly after eating here, leaving me vomiting profusely. I spoke with the manager who will be looking into it as I certainly do not want this happening to anyone else. read more

I haven't had a chance to understand why overall rating is low, but I can tell for sure that I will come back. Stopped by for some taco&beer on a snowy day and was pleasantly surprised with table availability and friendly demeanor of all employees. Also interior clearly had some effort in it since place used to be Friday's and managed to change ambiance completely. Food was better than expected: we had nachos and number of different tacos, not a single complaint from anyone present on quality or quantity, and definitely not on the speed of prep. Also we had at least 2 people other than the server stopping by and making sure that everything was great; so I conclude that management is working on improving customer experience, and for the most part it seems to be working. Now, why did I subtract a star from a place that I only visited once? Due to the server. While he clearly tried to be positive and assisting, his overall grade is C-. He did not know what tap beers were available and had to go check on them multiple times. He could not suggest alternatives to the missing ones. And my biggest point detractor that many restaurants are suffering from: he was not around when someone at the table run out of beer, and had to wait for him to finish playing / texting on his phone directly in sight next to the bar/kitchen. I sure will come back on another random night, and try to order different things and get a different server, but something tells me that I found major reason of poor raiting. read more

A solid 3.5 stars. Pros: -Frozen Margarita Sampler was really fun with some good flavors. Where else are you gonna get a prickly pear margarita? -Portion size is very fair for the price. You are not gonna walk away hungry Cons: -Food is really mediocre. Tried 3 different tacos but due to the same sauces and toppings they all tasted the same. The corn tortillas are big but taste kind of mealy. -They are still working out the service kinks. We were quoted 30 minutes for a table but it ended up being closer to 1.5 hours. -Though the portion size is fair for the price, the price itself is a bit much. 6 dollars for a side of rice and beans? If they knocked a few bucks off here and there I think the price would be more in line with the quality of the food. Overall: An interesting new spot that might see me stop by again but by no means will I be running back to Tios. read more

Our food was great, affordable, and large portions. Got the fundido which was packed with flavor. The veggie fajitas were enough enough to share (but only 3 tortillas). My mezcal Paloma was definitely a very light pour but otherwise good. The water was nice and ice cold. Our waiter was very polite and attentive. Food was served quickly. Would eat again. I would have given this place 5 stars, but very shortly (less than 10 minutes) after we received our meal (1.5 hours before closing, other parties also eating in the dining area, kitchen was still open) a staff member (likely required by management) brought a flashlight over and began to thoroughly sweep the section where we were seated (as in all of the tables surrounding ours). I completely understand the need to keep a clean restaurant, but ultimately we ended up getting grit in our eyes, sniffling noses, and dust in our faces in the process. Not to mention our food. We tried to politely mention this to our waiter and he did mention something to his fellow staff member, but the sweeping continued throughout the rest of our dinner. read more

We've been there few times already and I don't see why are people complaining about the restaurant and about prices! I don't mind paying for great food and service that you'll actually can enjoy. Some restaurants are over priced and at the end I'm still hungry but not at TIO's. Nachos very good, fajitas delicious and just tied the burger which nicely surprised me, they bake buns which are not your traditional burger buns and it was super soft the meat perfect medium just how I like it.
