Visiting flagstaff we wanted good American food. Got a reservation here at last minute, saw a bunch of high reviews for certain items mainly the pork belly. We are not really pork eaters thanks to my high cholesterol, but I had to try it. I'm glad I did. The pork belly was amazing!! I'd would have eaten 2-3 plates of it. By far amazing. Everything here was without a doubt extremely good food. The dessert wasn't as good as the rest but it was still good. It was a good place to take my S.O. For the night. The service was phenomenal and so was my fillet! The downside is that their menu is way too limited. You're basically one and done if you can only find one thing you like on the menu like me. There was actually a couple that sat next to us that looked at the menu and got up and left. This restaurant has great potential, but they really need to diversify their menu. I am also not a fan of the metal straws that they use. I am sure they're clean per se, but you can never truly disinfect a metal straw. I'm also not a fan of paper straws because there's no reason not to use plastic straws. We're not by an ocean and it's all ridiculousness! ! read more

So happy that Tinderbox is reopening after a remodel of both the space and the menu. Disclosure, this review, and its accompanying photos were from the soft reopening "friends and family" dinner. "TBox 3.0" is a move back upscale for the restaurant. The new decor is dark and elegant, with plenty of spacing between tables for appropriate social distancing. The team is good about wearing masks and using hand sanitizer, and guests are also required to wear masks when not at their seats. The cocktail menu has been revamped and is different from their sister property, Annex Cocktail Lounge, but equally well designed. I had the "Kill of the Night," with bourbon, aged rum, sherry, cocoa & banana, so right up my alley. Their house wines continue to be from Sutcliffe Winery and are great pairings with the food. The food menu is designed for sharing: several small plate options, some entrée selections, and a couple of larger plates designed for two people or more. For the three of us, we ended up with about 3 small plates per person, an entrée each, and a dessert each. We probably could have shared a dessert, but we were all in by then! Hits: Pork Belly with plum sauce and kimchi: a small bite that packs a lot of flavor in it. The kimchi gives it a little kick, but not enough to be called spicy, necessarily. Both the kimchi and the plum sauce are nice counterpoints to the yummy fattiness of the pork. Beef Tartare: the hit of togarashi gave this tartare a nice tingle. Caviar on Blini: one of the pricier starters, but worth it. Classic and perfect. Ora King Salmon: a delicate fish course, moist and flavorful. Good for someone with a lighter appetite. Braised Beef Zabuton: braised wagyu beef you barely have to chew. Delicious. I also loved the squab, although the accompanying grains were undercooked. We had several other dishes, and I took photos of them all, but the dishes above were the highlights. This was a very splurgy meal, but you could definitely dial back the number of small plates per person, do only small plates, or a smaller number of dishes overall. Welcome back, Tinderbox. I'm left speechless, I'm not someone to regularly write reviews, but for this special occasion I felt as if it was a must. my girlfriend and I visited Flagstaff for the first time and got to experience snowfall. we read up reviews on tinder box kitchen. so we decided to give it a try. everything initiated with calling in, Brandon answered the phone and as it was already late into the evening he managed to still schedule me a reservation and was very polite over the phone and in person when hosting us. Vivian was our waitress, I have had many excellent services as I've traveled to many countries and different areas around the world, but believe me when I say that the genuine part to Vivian is one that money can not buy, she absolutely excelled in every aspect, from being welcoming, attentive, politeness, and informative on the menu, and spoke very gently and kind about the chef. i wish every waitress could have the skill set and work ethic she has, but the genuine side of her was one of a kind. my girlfriend and I were very pleased. after our meal the notebook was a very nice touch. Rachael then approached us, the floor manager at the time and came to ask how our visit was, it was absolutely superb. I could have not asked for a better place. a very important factor to me to note is that I recently started experiencing anxiety late last year (2023). I'm still learning to manage it and it's a serious case that many people deal with. on our way prior to visiting tinder box kitchen. my anxiety was lingering all over the place, the safest place for me to calm it down is back home 4 hours away so I was a bit worried that it would interfere with my dinner while with my girlfriend, but id like to mention that the atmosphere in Tinder Box Kitchen was very warm and welcoming as if it almost made me feel at home, it definitely helped ease my anxiety. so if your someone who experiences anxiety, don't be worried about visiting TBK because I know what it's like to get the overwhelming feeling when it's loud and jam packed at a diner and going through it. tinder box kitchen was the complete opposite, plenty of clients but very calm and nice peaceful place to dine. I don't know the owner, but it appears as if he is doing a great job taking care of his employees, every employee appeared happy to be there, nobody seemed like it was "just another day on the shift", and of course if I'm leaving a review I must talk about the food. my hats go off to the chef and his cooks. the plates where phenomenal and delightful. Small space with good ambience. The service is good, perhaps a little disorganized with many people on the floor and all hovering over the tables. Our reservation was at 745, and our table was not ready until about 815. Being so small, it probably has little flexibility if people linger at their tables. That being said - the cocktail bar next door is AWESOME (check out Annex!), so it wasn't all bad. The food was good, maybe not great, overall. The pork belly appetizer and quail entree had very good flavors - pretty bold and unique. The ratios on the burrata salad felt a bit off - 3 types of cheese, beets, very little lettuce - although all the bites were tasty. The mussels were disappointing - really lacking in flavor, and a bit "fishy" to the extent where I felt a bit nervous about eating them. They also give diners a little palate cleansing fruity sorbetto that was a nice touch. This was our first time visiting Flagstaff, and I'm glad we tried Tinderbox but might not recommend it to other travelers. read more

From making the reservation to getting the check, everything was top notch! The manager Jeremy, welcomed us as we walked in the door and seated us at a very nice window table. Food was incredible, we tried the elk steaks, the pasta, and the scallops and all of them hit the mark. Unfortunately, we went 50/50 on the deserts. The cheesecake was very hard and dry, but the other desert - the sticky apple cake - made up for it. Ben, our server, was so attentive and a pleasure to have serve us. My partner and I frequently are in Flagstaff to enjoy the great outdoors. We really enjoy Tourist Home, but hadn't visited its THAT Place relative, Tinderbox. On our last trip, we made a reservation (the place is small) and went in with high expectations. Our server, Andrew, was very good. He asked if it was our first time there and offered a more in-depth description of menu items when we said it was. I ordered the pan-seared swordfish / $32 that comes with corn, potatoes, limas, and cherry tomatoes in a delicious broth (seriously, I used my spoon to eat it all and would have sipped from the bowl if I thought I could get by with it). My partner selected the pork porterhouse / $28 that comes with yams, bacon braised kale, baked apples, and cranberries. He ate every last bite. Tinderbox Kitchen has an extensive list of wines by the glass and bottle. We selected the house Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Both paired well with our meals. We were very full, but decided to split a piece of spice cake for dessert. It was worth it. Why only 4 stars? While our experience was positive, the couple seated next to us had a less-than-stellar experience. His meal arrived, and he finally started eating when it was clear his food would be cold if he waited for hers to arrive. The waiter and manager both stopped by to let her know her food was coming, but clearly her order was overlooked somewhere. Her plate finally arrived literally 15 minutes after his food did. Surprisingly, the manager didn't comp their dessert or anything. It's hard to not notice this when tables are so close. Everyone working was super nice including our bartender/server. The drinks were perfectly balanced and downright gulp-able. The duckfat fritters (ordered in Sept) sounded strange with their pairing of raspberry compote and...(i forget) some type of corn based cream. But it was a SHOWSTOPPER. I promised them I would be back the next day just to order those alone. In. Credible. Main dish was filet mignon served w parm truffle frites, asperagus, & mashed....potatos? Parnips? I will give it 5 stars for atmosphere and service. However, keep in mind that if you're going to eat here and get an appetizer, a couple of entrees, and a few alcoholic beverages (there were 4 of us and we shared an app, got our own entrees and a cocktail) that you're going to spend over $300 for dinner. The food was mediocre and unfortunately the appetizer only had 3 pieces of bread for a table of 4. Like at least make it an even amount when you're serving a larger party so everyone can have their own crostini. I just find this place way to expensive for what you get. I know they are trying to do the whole LA thing where they under serve you food and overcharge because it's "farm to table" but it's not LA, it's Flagstaff. The whole trying to be upscale and charge $50 a plate is a cop out especially in this college ski town. If you like to waste money on mediocre food trying to be upscale this is the place for you. read more

This place is really a gem. My son and I were in town to see NAU and wanted to have a nice dinner after a long day of walking. Every interaction we had, from making the reservation to the bartender, hosts and servers was top notch. Then the food, wow! I'm not really a foodie but the food was really perfect. Maybe one of the best steaks I've ever had. We started with the roasted garlic focaccia and they even brought me gluten free bread due to an allergy. The garlic was so perfectly cooked that it spread like butter. Even the cucumber mint sorbet they brought as a palette cleanser was great! They're all flavorful and just large enough for two. I don't eat bread and there were plenty of tapas for me. But if you like bread, you'll have a good selection as well. We tried the Crispy Duck and unlike other duck dishes, this was a more savory dish. Served over Anasazi beans that infused each of the three cuts of the duck. Location; right off San Francisco right before you get to Phoenix. Food; First we started with the Crab & Brie Dip, the dip was to die for crab did not over take the cheesy delicious dip. I will say the dip came with a thin crostini, which I may suggest a different dip compliment but the dip was so good we did not mind. My main entree was the Pan Seared Butterfish, and it was so good and cooked to perfection. For dessert we split the chocolate souffle and it was beyond delicious. While I disappointed initially when my favorite dish from my previous visit so no longer on the menu, this main dish was mighty good. A hidden gem in the heart of Flagstaff. This restaurant exceeded all expectations from the service, food and wine selections. They could rival with some of the bouqiest restaurants in Scottsdale for half the cost. Our server Owen was remarkable. He guided us through the menu and gave amazing recommendations all night. I don't think we would have ordered the butter radishes without his convincing. And I'm so glad we did because it was one of my favorite bites of the evening. All of the food is so light and perfectly balanced. I wanted to go into the kitchen and give every chef a hug. This meal was THAT good. Sarah behind the bar was excellent at making suggestions for dinner, the duck was very good, the skin could have been crispier, but great flavor in the meat and perfection on the cook.
