Finally got to try this restaurant and so glad we did. Loved everything we ordered at this family-owned place. They're so friendly and kind, food was super tasty and not overly salty. Definitely a new go-to for Chinese for us! What we got: Beef chow fun - Great flavor, the noodles had a good texture and are the right kind of wide rice noodle. Beef was tender and juicy, and I loved all the veggie in it. Fried rice - We got this without soy sauce--soo good. So many different proteins in it too: pork, chicken and shrimp. This was great. Egg foo young - My husband really likes this dish and after our usual chinese place closed, he hasn't really gotten it from anywhere. He said this was good and he liked it. I think it's the mix of textures that does it for him--a little crispy, but tender and saucy at the same time. Vegetables - Not too salty and definitely fresh vegetables (not canned). They used broccoli, bok choy and carrots. Everything was crispy but tender--nothing was overly soft or overly crunchy. It was just right. They used to be located down the road in Barrington, that's when I became acquainted with them nearly 40 years ago. Relocated to Palatine many years ago, take out only, a small family operation that serves your food cooked to order, so unlike bigger operations, you may wait a bit for your food. It is fairly priced. We had the moo shu pork, kung Pao with two proteins, and house special fried rice. Free egg rolls if your order is past a certain dollar amount. Tin Seng is my go to Chinese take out restaurant in Palatine. Anytime I'm needing some good ole warm, Chinese comfort food (on a cold, tiring day, or pretty much every time our family comes back from a long vacation), Tin Seng is where we go. My favorite there is the Chicken and Broccoli. I have not had a chicken and broccoli at a Chinese take out that tasted better than Tin Seng's. To me, it tastes like good, home cooked food. It uses a white sauce (not brown, like some others). It's a perfect salt-level for me, not too heavy, but very flavorful. All my kids love it too, which is a huge plus. We order TWO everytime we go. Ok, wrote a GOOD review back in '21,food was great. Now I'm updating it in '24. Not good. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and ordered many times since my last review. We were really excited to try a local Chinese cuisine, particularly after seeing all of the positive reviews. Ordered many items take-home from the menu: the sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken were abysmal and tasteless. Fantastic Chinese take-out place conveniently near our place! I'm asian and usually prefer the sit-down type of asian food, but this place is definitely the place to be if you're craving chinese food but just want to eat it in the comfort of your home. We've never been disappointed by Tin Seng's cooking. The Chicken with Broccoli (usually i'm hesitant to get this other places) is really flavorful and homey-tasting. The egg drop soup was also delicious and given in a generous portion for a reasonable price. One dish that was surprisingly good was the Tin Seng Chow Mein. When I ordered it, I expected it would be the Cantonese-style thin, long, all-stuck-together crispy noodles that I'm used to (sorry, not sure how to describe it further), but it ended up being more like the small, fried noodle chips that sometimes go in asian chicken salads (again, not sure how to describe it fully). I thought it was going to be a dud, but it ended up being a great symphony of flavors with a good portion of shrimp, chicken, vegetables, pork, bean sprouts, and many other things that I can't remember anymore. The food was "meh". The egg rolls were ok but I wish they were Chicago style. We got beef chop suey and beef with oyster sauce and really couldn't tell which was which. There wasn't a lot of beef and the sauces were very plain. I did appreciate that the food was good and hot. But I was disappointed that there weren't any fortune cookies in the bag. I'm shocking myself by giving Tin Seng 5 stars but here it is! I went expecting not to like it based on other reviews (peer pressure) but everything about Tin Seng is fantastic. First things first, their prices are great. They have some of the cheapest lunch specials around and you get a boatload of food for said prices. The lunch prices hold true every day except Monday (they are closed Mondays) from 1130am to 230pm. My lunch specials were $6.35 each and they come with a can of pop & egg roll, woohoo but most on the menu are $6.15 each. Sesame Chicken - AMAZING! Honestly some of the best I've ever had but be warned it's quite different than the usual Sesame Chicken. The sauce is soooo sweet and sticky. The chicken is really fresh and deep fried with just the right crisp on the outside. Orange Chicken - Not spicy at all despite the menu warning. I liked the dish a lot but def preferred the sesame chicken Fried Rice - Yum, delicious, really good Egg Roll - Thank goodness it had no shrimp in it (I'm allergic) but was filled with beef. Yummy eggroll that was deep fried to perfection. I think this is my new favorite spot for Chinese food! It doesn't hurt that the lady working is so cute & sweet. It's a hidden spot on the corner of a strip mall off of Northwest Highway (address says Quentin but it's actually NW Hwy facing). Tried Tin Seng for the first time today, and I can now honestly say Tin Seng has the best chicken fried rice I've tried in the area. With scallions, sprouts, egg, and chicken, it's not overpoweringly salty, which is what I prefer (if not salty enough for you, feel free to add soy sauce from the soy sauce packet included with each fried rice order). Amazing Chinese food for a small business! The owner (lady) was accommodating for my husband's sensitivity to fish and oyster sauce and it's true - he loved it, no reactions, and she reassured me at pickup! It was the best custom Chinese food we have ever carried out! We ordered chicken with garlic sauce and cashew chicken which were both amazing! We did order the chicken chow fun which was good for my daughter but we definitely needed to add spices to it. It was fine otherwise! The veggies spices in all the dishes tasted fresh! I really hope this place does well as it is really hard to fine business willing to take the extra step to accommodate special requests! This place will always have my business as we have been told "no changes" by many other local Chinese places like absolutely Chinese. We ordered Mongolian beef, Beef in oyster sauce, sweet and sour chicken, peking delight, chicken fried rice and pot stickers. No flavor in anything! Mongolian beef had no spice or kick to it, had carrots in it????? Beef in oyster sauce was nothing but onions, peapods, carrots and hardly any beef which was fatty and chewy. Sweet and sour chicken was huge pieces of mostly breading and very little chicken. Peking delight, don't even know what to say other than it had jalapena peppers in it, never had Chinese food with that in it before. Ordered tonight for the first time and we were in for a treat! Ordered for delivery when I saw they delivered. Ordered the chicken with pea pods, beef and broccoli chow fun, Beef Vegetable Lo Mein, and beef fried rice. We also got fried egg rolls and Crab Rangoon. Everything was fantastic. The "large" is rather large, so order accordingly. The fried rice was reviewed online as being really good and the food lived up to the reviews. There are other items on the menu we really want to try as well. The staff was all super friendly and helpful. I just tried this place. I enjoyed it. Definitely don't not try it because of the store front or small inside. It has a very friendly staff service and good food options. I wanted to try the Lemon Chicken, which not every chinese restaurant offers. I liked it but I think Orange Chicken and Sweet and Sour is still my preferred choice. I got the crab rangoon and chicken fried rice. If you're not familiar with ordering chinese... the small fried rice is more than enough for one person. The rangoon is 6 pieces. If you spend over 20 dollars here you get an order (2) of egg rolls, they're huge and really tasty. Order also cokes with side of free white rice and fortune cookies. Tin Seng is a gem of a hole in the wall, right on the corner of Quentin and 14. After placing our order by phone I drove from Fox River Grove and was warmly greeted by Samantha, who was impressed I drove past three other Chinese restaurants that she threw in a free egg roll, which was delicious. We ordered garlic chicken lo mein and the thin noodles were perfect, just on the soft side of al dente, with yummy and super fresh veggies and chicken. We also had the cashew chicken which was rich and just spicy enough. I judge all Chinese restaurants on their pot stickers, and Tin Seng has the best ones I've had in decades. Don't judge a restaurant by its strip mall store front. This place is not your typical strip mall "every dish comes with a defibrillator and a roll of toilet paper" Chinese take out. The food is really good, and the ladies that work here are so delightful. I've had the General Tso's chicken, the Sesame Chicken, the fried rice and the egg rolls. The chicken dishes and fried rice I'd rate as better than Palatine's other options. Egg roll tasted a touch funky to us, though. Wouldn't recommend that one. There are plenty of places for me to get Chinese when I'm at school in Champaign, but nothing ever seems good enough because I grew up eating Tin Seng. My family has followed Tin Seng every time they've moved, no matter how inconvenient. 40 minute trip to Barrington and back? Worth it. Though the current location is definitely more preferred... I don't think I've been disappointed by anything here. I've always been a fan of the General Tso's chicken, and lately I've really been a fan of the twice cooked pork. I love the veggie fried rice too. It's great for breakfast the next day, but there never seems to be any left... Most important: Get the crab rangoons. They're the biggest crab rangoons I've ever seen, and they're also the best I've ever had. You will not be disappointed. Unless you're on a diet, because these will kill your diet. Because you will eat them all. (and because, come on, it's deep fried cream cheese) But you know, you probably won't care all that much because they're just that good. Sometimes, there's a table and chairs inside where you could hypothetically eat, but generally it's best to do carry out or delivery. I don't think I'm even in the delivery range so take-out for me! The food is usually done on time, though sometimes maybe 5 minutes late if they're busy. Never long enough to be a problem, though. And remember, crab rangoons. read more
