Despite the fact that I had three kids with me at the time--and perhaps against my better parental judgment--I somewhat involuntarily walked right into Northtown on our recent visit to Arcata. Inside, I found a cool bookstore that was decidedly Arcata-- an eclectic mix of authors and books that might dwell in some specialized section of an old Vroman's or Borders. The magazine rack had the usuals and the obscures, without a hint of overdetermination or veiled self-aggrandizing nonsense. A bookstore that is so cool it doesn't care if you think it's cool? Yep, this is it. Nice kid behind the counter, maybe even a little square for edgy Arcata... but like all college towns, everyone here is either on their way to self discovery, or trying to find their way back to the path. In the meantime, grab a good book here and get lost in it... indeed, not all who wander aren't lost, but a few folks in this burg sure seem to be.

There are multiple floors of books to explore and you can easily spend a day within the store talking about books with the staff, shopping for books, and living and breathing books. If you're traveling through Eureka and wanting a wonderful literary adventure, stop in old town and explore the huge variety of antique shops, used bookstores and wonderful niche shops that the city offers. My mom, who we lost in September of 2019, used to come here all the time. I was here today, and she still remembered her. She had such nice things to say about her. As other people have said, it doesn't look that big on the outside, but it is huge on the inside. If you can't find what you are looking for, you are probably not looking hard enough. They have new and used books, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, travel, rare and out of print books,, a very large children's room, and the list goes on and on. The prices are more than fair.... They also buy used books at a fair rate for store credit . If you don't find what you need this time, they will roll your credit over until the next time you come in. It's really cool that they do that. Once you buy your book, take it across the street to Los Bagels, And you can grab a nice snack while you peruse your purchase.
