Need a baby gift? Look no further!…read more I had the chance to visit Zen last week after my daughter gave birth to our first grandchild. Zen a beautiful store (with lots and lots of non-baby items, but that's all I was focused on). The selection, price and quality are all fantastic, and the service was somehow even better. We picked out a soft robe for the new mama, and lot of colorful, adorable rompers for the little one. I can't wait to stop by on my next visit.

This is the Arcata branch of the larger store in Eureka…read more Right on the main plaza beneath the hotel, it holds up the lower end of the arts and crafts market in Arcata. Not meaning that the quality is poor, but the the pieces are generally small, lower in price and easy to carry away than the competetion on the other side of the plaza. While well made, I would categorize the selection as a bit "cutsie," which for me is a turn-off. After 30 minutes of browsing, I found nothing to buy, which is unusual for me. If looking for a gift for a student there, this is the place to come. But for more mature tastes, I would go elsewhere.

I am new to the area, and a week ago went into this store with my husband. I found several things I…read moreliked, although pricey. We bought a purse with no tag. The owner had to be called over the phone to verify the price. I bought the bag for $44. It was only a week, and the zipper started breaking. I went down there yesterday and the owner was present. I told her about the problem with the bag, and she remembered the exchange about the original purchase, but she refused to give me the other bag in exchange for the broken one. her reason was that I had been incorrectly quoted on the price of the first one, and I was only to recieve credit for that part and would have to pay the difference which was $40 more dollars. In no way was any of this my fault, of course. The shoddy over priced merchandise, her pricing error, or her hapless teenage employee who was just trying to help. I still was getting screwed by this old snatch with an overpriced junk shop. I took my bag back and left, never to return. Maybe I can glue it.

And right now, in a shopping bag under a bench a few steps inside my front door in Oakland is a beautiful sweater from the Irish Shop, procured for aforementioned tractor-rider week before last during my visit to this fine little town lost but not forgotten near the top of this silly state of ours. I hadn't planned on leaving with a sweater. I had planned just on going inside and seeing what was what in this place I had passed over the years wondering briefly of its contents and other things. But once inside with the Gaelic crosses and toffee and wool from the North Sea and the nice shopkeeper that was five inches shorter without her shoes, inside I got to thinking of the trips I've made to the Emerald Isle with my mother the tractor-rider, the Scots-Irish lass who can't sing you Danny Boy without crying. And then there was this sweater. And it was really, really beautiful. And in a few weeks it will be her birthday. And then the rest all seemed to happen so naturally. Please, you must keep this to yourself. She'd feign surprise when the postman arrived even if you did tell her but I'd so much prefer that it be an all the way surprise. And if one day you're at a bit of a loss for how maybe to show your love and appreciation for the woman who made all this possible, make for yourself a long weekend and head up the coast. There's something here for her, I promise you. And it matters not from whence you hail, lovey. As there's a little Irish in all of us.
