TIMESTEAD @ DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO They have game day specials, which were the best part. The smash burger and fries were just $10, and absolutely worth the money. The cheese curds, however, were a lot smaller than I expected. They also kept forgetting the ranch, not just on our order but on several others, which was a little annoying. That said, the staff was super friendly and nice. We did have an issue when leaving. We were part of a big group of about 10, and my boyfriend and I closed out our tab before heading out. Later, we got a call saying we never paid and had to send a screenshot of our payment. It was strange, since we'd had a whole conversation with the waiter when we paid, yet he claimed we hadn't. That felt a little suspicious and odd. Overall, though, it was great vibes, the food was decent, and the NFL game was awesome. They have a few TVs, and the place is small to medium sized with a front area and a back area. It's a nice spot. read more

It was hot. I had time to kill before a dinner reservation. I wanted to have a drink before dinner but the restaurant I was going to didn't open before the first seating. It's how I ended up here at Timestead. And I don't regret it. Sat at the bar. Bartender was friendly AF. Her let me sample two pours which I ended up getting and we chatted a bit about restaurant recommendations. His first, was where I was going to dinner and I hadn't even mentioned that. As it got busy, he still checked in to make sure I was good. I didn't eat but had a few pours. See pics. One didn't make it. Too blurry - but I enjoyed how the place was cooler though I didn't hear or feel AC. I was out of the sun and the beer was cold. That's all that mattered to me. It's a little further out than I usually stay or hang out but I could see myself going again. Especially if I was in the area and wanted to just hang out a little. read more

Timestead is the reincarnation of The Local in the Gaslamp Quarter. It's operating under the umbrella of Modern Times. I came here for a weekday lunch recently while taking a break from civic duty just several blocks west of this establishment. Little did I know that this was a watch bar for the Red Devils (Manchester United), and they happened to be starting an EPL match that was being televised on the flat screens. Without this live football game, the number of customers would have been 90 percent less at this time of the day. The dining area was well lit and spacious. The central bar was being staffed by a bartender who took all of the orders. The menu sheet was littered with the typical fare for a bar/restaurant. About a dozen Starters and Small Plates were at the top of the page. I picked the Slider Trio from this list. A platter was provided with three sliders... BBQ Brisket, Classic Cheeseburger, and Crispy Pepperjack Chicken. A pickle wedge was speared on top of the brisket and chicken while a cherry tomato adorned the cheeseburger. The best of the trio was the cheeseburger as the patty was cooked medium. The brisket was a bit dry and could have used more sauce. The chicken cutlet was breaded and fairly crispy. At $15, it seemed pricey, but I think it's par for the course nowadays for sliders. I gave a three star rating for my noontime meal at Timestead. read more

Timestead is a new restaurant/bar concept by Modern Times. It occupies the former Local on Fourth Ave across from the US Grant Hotel. It's a great spot for those attending a show at the civic center. In a sea of more formal dining options or rowdy bars, this offers a nice middle ground. The interior is spacious with a mix of booth, bar and high top seating along with a lounge area. There are tons of TVs where they play games but it has a slightly more upscale feel than your traditional sports bar. We came on a holiday, so they were understandably short staffed and busy. But, the server/bartender/host was on it and kept the whole place moving herself! I was impressed by the food! My husband and I ordered the smash burgers. Although they say they are 2oz patties, they are pretty filling! I couldn't eat it all. It was like a fancier Friendly burger with carmelized onions and mayo. For only $12, it was a solid price! They sadly don't come with fries but we ordered some to share. They were super crunchy and delicious! Very impressed by the food options! While we didn't get drinks, they did have some fun cocktails on the menu. We saw a lot of people ordering the skrewball concoction with whipped cream that looked real good! Nice addition to the downtown scene and a solid spot for a pre show meal! read more

Came here with a few coworkers for lunch and ordered the $22 all-you-can-eat tacos. Unfortunately, our first round of tacos didn't arrive until about 50 minutes after we were seated. While delays can happen, we arrived before the lunch rush, so the wait felt excessive. The bigger issue was the service from one staff member (gentleman with long wavy hair) who was delivering food. After nearly an hour of waiting, he informed us they were out of shrimp--something that affected half of my order since my first 2 tacos were shrimp as well as the rest of the table. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Since the missing shrimp tacos threw off the order, no one was sure which plates belonged to whom. Rather than helping clarify, he impatiently said, "Come on guys" when no one immediately claimed the food. As a result, I ended up with a chicken taco I never intended to order while still paying full price for the AYCE option. It felt similar to paying for the premium option at an all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and then being told nearly an hour later that the premium items were no longer available. Had we been informed earlier, expectations could have been managed accordingly. That said, our waitress was friendly, attentive, and seemed to be doing her best under the circumstances. The food was OK, but the combination of the long wait, poor communication, and dismissive attitude of that gentleman left a disappointing impression. read more

Very cute brewery, with plenty of seating and a great stage for events. The one thing I would say is that the service can be hit or miss, and that they are still finding their footing as they opened recently. They had excellent options for vegan food including their cauliflower steak, so this is a good option if you're looking for a place to go with a mixed crowd. read more

I came here on a Saturday evening around 5 PM. There's plenty of seating, both at the bar and in booths, and the place itself is super cute. Tons of TVs everywhere so it's great for watching games. That said, I was pretty unimpressed with the beer menu. It made me miss when Modern Times felt like the best brewery in town. I even asked about their old locations, and the staff didn't seem to know much about them or whether they were still open, which kind of killed the nostalgia. Food-wise, it's classic sports bar fare. I ordered: *Fried Pickles: horrible!! It came in spheres instead of the usual slices. Unfortunately, they just didn't work for me. They lacked that crunch and flavor you expect. It felt like biting straight into a pickle without much payoff. Overall, the location is great and the TV setup is solid. I only tried one food item, which I wouldn't recommend, and the beer selection was disappointing. It has potential, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. read more

Went in with my wife to try some place new. We've been locals for years now and felt the service in downtown has been on the decline for most of it. So, we went into Timestead to give it a try and it was a great experience. The food was genuinely good and I loved the munchwrap (can't go wrong with an elevated crunchwrap supreme). The best part of the visit though was hands down, Abner. The man keeping it real behind the bar. He was slammed busy and new to role but he kept checking in and had a great attitude. Trust me when I say that he is the sole reason that this new neighborhood spot will be a regular haunt for my wife and I. Give that man his props! read more

This was my experience at Timestead on Saturday, March 7th.  We came in for dinner at 5:00 pm, before attending a show downtown at 7:00 pm.  This would allow us more than enough time to enjoy dinner before heading to the show. When we arrived, it was pretty slow as it continued to fill up closer to 6 pm.  Two people in my party and our orders were placed closer to 5:15 pm - 5:20 pm.  My friends drink and our appetizer came out in an acceptable amount of time, followed by her meal.  It was 6 pm and I still had not received my meal. I flagged down our waitress and she said she'd check.  She came back 10 minutes later to tell me they were working on it.  Around 6:30 pm, my food still had not arrived and she said they'd remove it from our check.  At that point, I told her to forget about it because we had to leave for the show.  She also took 20% off of our check, but the point is, that is highly unacceptable to take over an hour to receive our food.  No explanation, just that she was checking.   I'd also like to note that we had to continuously go to the bar to re-fill our own waters as we were rarely checked in on.   I understand that things get busy, but this was so disappointing.  Things happen, but I'd guess that you'd be properly staffed for a Saturday night.  I used to frequest Modern Times when it was in Point Loma and was looking forward to visiting Timestead. read more

The vibes and environment are great. The drinks are good. The staff is friendly and attentive. There are plenty of TV for watching what you want. The biggest issue is the food. I love salt, salt is critical is cooking and brings out the flavor on your food. But holy, their food is salted. So much that we couldn't finish any of our food. It even gave me a headache for the rest of the day. I didn't know that a salt headache was a thing till now. Look it up, seriously it's a thing. However, I can taste the potential and I can see that there are good flavors and textures to be had, they just need to ease on that salt, by a lot. read more

We are fans of Modern Times, not just the beer, but the experience at thier other locations. Having one open in downtown SD, we were excited! It having food (where the other locations don't..), double excited. We showed up for opening night, and expected that perhaps things would be a bit clunky, slow, perhaps the food might be a little off while they worked out the kinks. No such thing. Amazing mac and cheese (currently our number two!), and a BLT that just kicks @$$. Those are two very basic bar/brewery foods, but Time Stead takes them up about three levels. We're looking forward, very much to the developing beer list (we heard they might have aged beers!), and trying out the entire menu. This location is just off the beaten path enough you're not gonna get the Gaslamp shenanigans crowd, but will have locals, and perhaps some adventurous tourist. We stopped in on Saturday for lunch before seeing the matinee performance of Beetlejuice at the Civic Theater. The atmosphere is excellent, our waitress was super friendly and the food was delicious. I ordered the Beetlejuice drink, similar to an Aperol spritz. It was really good, so I had two. We each had the smash burger and shared an order of fries. The portion size is large. The burgers and fries were scrumptious! We will be eating here the next time we are at the Civic Theater. read more

I love a good dirty martini with pepperoncini juice instead of olive juice and know that not many places can cater to that request, but Emilya was more than willing to check with the kitchen and made magic happen!!! We can to checkout this spot for the vinyls. We were greeted by Keyontae (apologizes if spelled incorrectly). He was very friendly, welcoming, and also let us know they had coffee and refreshers. I got a recommended draft abs my girlfriend got one of the cold foam refreshers. She said it was quite delicious! We enjoyed browsing the records, and talking to the friendly staff. We even got to speak to the chef, Jorge, who was very nice and gave us some history on the spot. Everyone was just really chill in there and they had some good record selections. Great visit here tonight. A new bar (finally) from Modern Times. I read in San Diego Beer News that they were doing a very soft opening this weekend (still bits of remodeling to do apparently, which will be added over the next couple of weeks). I was delighted I went - the food was really great. An extensive food and drinks menu, with a good range of beers (as you'd expect from a Modern Times Bar) We had the fish and chips and the steak and they were both really lovely - fresh and tasty, and really good value. The staff were super friendly. We will definitely return - an excellent addition to this overlooked part of downtown. read more

The service at this place used to be great when they had a different owner. Now their service is horrible. Their coffee station inside the restaurant that just opened had the rudest employees. Came in to check out the new place and was so impressed! The menu seems like your "average" Americana bar/lounge food but once you taste it, you will be craving it. The bartenders that were working, Diana and Trevance (Pm bar manager) were really nice and amazing they both anticipated everything we wanted and never left us asking for anything. The manager Marcos was the coolest guy. Very friendly and welcoming. It's nice to have a manager so present and socializing, and not just because something is wrong.
