I have been going to see Charminique for years. She does great work with color and styling but she is consistently late to every single appointment and always "running behind". My biggest mistake was to continue to go to a person who isn't timely. I made an appointment for June 8th at 9:00 AM. **I booked online and was charged for the entire amount before having a service** I arrived to my appointment 5 minutes early. Charminique had another client in her chair when I arrived. She hadn't even started styling the clients hair. I took a seat and Charminique asked me to wait 10-15 minutes to finish her client. 10-15 minutes went by and she wasn't ready for me. 30 minutes passed and Charminique was not ready. I got up to leave as I had another engagement to which I needed to be on time. I filed a dispute with my credit card company to get refunded and Kenyon (owner) and Charminique lied to the credit card company stating I showed up late and left without saying anything. Actually, I told Charminique I was leaving because my appointment was at 9 AM and it was 9:30 AM and she was still servicing another client. She said sorry and asked me to wait (the audacity to ask me to wait more than 30 minutes past my original appointment time). The owner was there and witnessed everything and didn't say or do anything to right the situation. If you like sitting around for hours wasting your entire day in a salon, go to Time Hair Gallery! If you like a business that has no integrity and will lie and to keep your money, go to Time Hair Gallery. If it took $110 to be rid of this place and poor service then it is a $110 well spent. would give negative stars if possible. read more

I was referred to Kenyon after seeing a friends hair and decided it was time for a change . After years of wearing crotchet and braid styles, then 2 years of doing my own hair and wearing wigs during the pandemic, I was ready to throw the wig out the window. I called Kenyon and told her what I wanted , I told her I was over doing my hair and and she made it happen. I gave her some crazy description for the highlights that I wanted and she nailed. Finally decided after 10 years of not stepping foot in a salon to treat myself to a new hair color. Before my salon hiatus, Time Hair Gallery was my regular salon and Kenyon (owner) was my hair stylist for years. There was no other place or person that even crossed my mind as an alternate place to go. I am so glad that I followed my first mind and went with what I knew. Kenyon and Time Hair Gallery are still the best at what they do. With COVID-19 protocols in place, I think I even prefer the quieter and less trafficked salon as it is now. Kenyon gave me a beautiful balayage hair color that has gotten me a ton of compliments. As always, Kenyon not only gave me great color, wash, and style service, but she inquired about my hair care routine, gave me great tips on keeping up the color and healthy condition of my hair. She even called me the next day to make sure I was still loving my hair. Kenyon is a master at what she does and her business is a reflection of that. My original review was 5 stars but I've revised it because of the way my hair was layered. I requested a more tapered cut. I didn't realize how much hair in my crown was cut at first because of the way it was styled. Now that I am wearing my hair with less product, I am noticing that the hair in my crown is too short. The hair below that should have been cut more or the crown should have been cut less. My natural look flat in the back and isn't firming the shape that I wanted. This may also because my hair was cut wet, not dry. I requested a DivaCut which is always dove dry. I think that would have prevented the issues I stated above. I'm not sure if I will go back to Time for the same service. Their prices were lower but I didn't like the results as much. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a while now, but finally am pulling the trigger today. I've been going to THG for a little over 2 years now, and my natural hair has never been healthier. I normally get blowouts, and Charminique is a genius -- my hair is silky, swingy and even lasts through a couple of sweaty workouts. Further, Charminique is an expert colorist: she's done my highlights twice now and they are always beautiful - I constantly get compliments. More than anything, Char and the rest of the staff are amazing. Char listens to my hair concerns - and I can be a bit neurotic at times ;), she's easy-going and super talented. I've never seen a client (of any stylist) leave without a "wow" on his/her face. That said, the salon doesn't do time-based appointments - so on a busy day, there may be a bit of a wait, but hey, there's Wi-Fi, televisions and great conversations -- so I'm happy! I'm on the hunt for a great salon and decided to check out time hair gallery after reading the reviews here. I was in the last phase of a transition to natural hair. I needed my extensions taken out, relaxed hair chopped off and a natural hair style done. I walked in, the salon was quiet, clean, the stylists friendly and asked a lot of questions about my hair and what I wanted. Things were off to a great start! 11:30 - 11:45ish : Extensions were taken out. (Super fast). 11:45 - 12:45 : I was asked to wait while another customer got her hair finished up. (I was excited about the pleasant service so far, so no big deal if I had to wait a bit to get my hair done well). 12:40ish - 1:30ish: (I didn't know I would have to wait an hour! Jeez! ) Braids were undone, hair washed (amazing scalp scrub) and conditioned. (Speed of service started to slow down as my stylist started chatting with other stylists. This continued for the rest of my appointment). 1:30ish - 2:00ish: Deep condition under heat (I love that this was done without my asking. They really do care about healthy hair here). 2:00ish - 2:30ish: My stylist was gone. Not sure where she went to. I was already frustrated by having to wait for an hour while someone else got their hair done and by the slowness of service. I told another stylist I had to leave soon and could she please call my stylist and ask her to finish my hair. 2:30ish - 3:30ish: Stylist came back. I had to be out of there by 4 and from the lack of respect for my time so far, I knew my stylist would not be done in time. I had to tell her to just cut and blow dry my hair. No style. 4 HOURS!!! And I didn't get my hair styled (this would have taken another hour for her to complete). I've done this exact same service before and it didn't take anywhere close to 4 hours. So, they are great for healthy hair and great styling (from what I saw on other clients); but what a time suck. Most people don't have that kind of time to waste on any day. Update 3/3/10 So about 3 weeks ago I went back to Time Hair Gallery. Unfortunately Nadling was completely booked for a month (yeah, she is kinda that good). So instead I met with Kenyon! Well...let me tell you, talent is abundant at THG. I received a rinse that upgraded my look from lil' ole me to FREAKIN SPECTACULAR. Do you know what it means to feel like 1 million bucks when you've spent under $150? Thats getting your money's worth, for sure! I had never received a rinse on my virgin hair and its was gorgeous. I have found my permanent rinse color! Kenyon also put some of the most beautiful curls in my hair that I had ever seen! I truly walked out a new woman and now have a signature hair style. In this world of natural hair, my true self has surfaced. I absolutely loved being Kenyon's temp client. I felt a little torn between her and Nadling :( But I believe in having faith and loyalty in my hair stylist...and I'm sure Nadling can do just the same (OBVIOUSLY IF SHE IS BOOKED 9/10 times :) ) Having Kenyon do my hair meant that I now have another amazing go-to stylist when Nadling is booked solid. Its a very comforting feeling, for sure! I also liked that I was out of there in 3 hours! Record breaking time! I wonder what it would take for 2.5 hours which would be normal considering I have a "big hair" QUICK SHOUT OUT: To the lovely ladies that shampoo and take appointments :) Thanks for reading the comments. lol. I've tried a number of salons since moving to Chicago, and for the most part...I've had great experiences. With one tiny, tiny exception. I always gulped, gasped, swallowed, blinked and nearly cried when they gave me my bill! I have probably spent more on my hair...than I have on vacations in the last three years!!! WELL, not any more! Thanks to my niece, I discovered Time Hair Gallery and Nadling. Let me clarify: This is not a bargain basement salon. It is wonderfuly appointed. The staff is professional and the stylist use all of the latest and greatest products. AND my hair looks divine!!! This is probably the first time (in a long time) where I left a salon and I absolutely, positively loved my hair. I mean I've loved it before...but there was always something I wanted done differently. A bit longer, a bit fuller, a few highlights...something. But, not this time. Nadling spent time talking to me...about my lifestyle and my preferences, so she got it perfectly right the first time! I have gone a couple times and have had great experiences with my natural hair. I love my silk outs and always take time for the steamer. My hair always comes out laid and it lasts. I have been to both Victoria and Kenyon and have had great issues. I have also had trims both times and they actually trimmed instead of cutting hair which is big for me! I am going back for a color in 2 weeks so I will provide an update. Highly recommend for anyone with natural hair. read more

It had been over a week since I chopped off my hair myself (I had full bangs w/ shaved sides so I just cut off my bangs) and my 'fro needed some serious love. I'd passed Time Hair Gallery's sign saying "Barber on Duty" several times as I made my way to grub at Porkchop on the late night. It had never occurred to me to stop in until today while browsing the Yelp reviews and trying to squeeze in a cut between a double shift at work. I was thrilled to call at 2:45pm and get a 3:15 appointment with Jeff. I trust that this will be a rare occurrence as word gets out on his skills. As a woman who has grown out and cut her hair off several times over the years, I immediately appreciated Jeff's gentle yet insistent series of questions about what I wanted each step of the way. Even though I came in with less than an inch all over, Jeff took his time to make sure my sides, front hairline, and nape were tapered in a flattering way. Clean cut yet natural and feminine. I also appreciated his way of alternating between clippers and scissors - an important distinction for short 'fros. The gems of the West Loop reveal have been revealing themselves to me slowly and Jeff certainly is one of them. The salon itself is warm and welcoming - Kimberly, the receptionist immediately offered tea or juice upon my arrival and upon departure, made sure I received a "frequent haircut" card. The clientele and other stylists were also wonderful to be around - in the short time I was there & getting my ear hustle on, I collected tips about good dentists and belly-laughed over the many ways folks classify their friends. She took her time and was very patient during our hair consultation. She provided various options of best natural hair extensions to blend with my natural hair. I decided to purchase Indique natural hair extensions based upon her recommendation. Kenyon nailed the color highlights that I requested and my sew in looks so natural. She's definitely puts hair care at the forefront of her service delivery. She deep conditioned my hair and made sure a net was sewed in to protect my own tresses. The interlocking was really professional, fast, and fair priced. I have baby/pre-teen locs and hadn't gotten my hair retwisted in about six weeks. I had an excellent shampoo, deep conditioning, and oil treatment. I wasn't happy with my locs after the retwist (even though Orlando assured me Locs take patience) but its been two weeks and I love them! I definitely think its a great place to get your locs retwisted and I love to support small businesses. Still, I wouldn't make it my home salon. It took awhile to make an appointment (I tired online and by phone). The atmosphere was a bit quiet for my taste--I wanted a more fun, relaxed vibe. I felt awkward asking questions because I would have been the only one talking. Additionally, I was pretty upset when I left the salon. My loctician in Colorado usually palm rolls my hair--it would have been nice to be asked what I wanted and how I expected my hair to look. I know its only hair, but you want to look and feel amazing after you leave a salon. Overall, its a solid option for locs if you like quiet. read more

Hi, I met Char for the first time and she made me feel very comfortable. She explained to me the things that I should be doing to take care of my hair. She was on time and even informed me what she was using on my hair and even gave me a sample to see how I liked the product. Everyone there was friendly and it also felt good to be around successful African American women who are professional and respectful. The only thing I did not like was the parking but I am not used to city parking so come early or find a reasonable parking lot . I was happy with my hair. That is what matters! read more

I had my first appointment yesterday. I made the appointment on the same day, and when I showed up, my stylist was ready for me. (You need 15 extra minutes to fill out their intake form). Charminique was my stylist. Before she started, she asked questions about my hair, and the products I was using and any allergies. She asked me whether I wanted to stay natural or go straight (I got an amino acid treatment). She was patient while I hemmed and hawed about what to do. We finally decided to do straight. I was out of the chair in about 1.5 hours, (wash, amino acid treatment, blow dry, style and trim) no miscellaneous waiting. My hair is really thick, and I have had stylists do a poor job of getting my hair saturated with the treatment. Charminque took her time, and it is clear that all of my hair was well treated with the amino acid treatment. My hair was styled (to my liking). The price was fair. I saw an elderly woman walk out with a beautiful sew in. For the first time it made me consider a sew in. The atmosphere was funny and charming (the discussion about Lebron James' short suit pants and his purse were hilarious). I would definitely recommend this shop. I will come again. read more

I just love this shop!!!!! Nadling was my stylist and she is the very best! My hair is healthy and happy! I have every style from natural Afro to sets to press and curls to extensions. Nadling is incredibly skilled in all areas of hair styling/care. She will totally make you look beautiful! Her spirit is just as wonderful as her talent. I recommend her strongly! I arrived in Chicago unsure of where to go to get my hair done. I am so blessed to have found this salon. The entire staff is polite, professional, and fun to be around. Heard about this salon from a friend when I was looking for a new place for my hair. Started going there a few months ago and really love the place. Been a few times, each time had my hair done by Charminique, she is awesome stylist, very personable and provide great customer service. Always get compliments on my hair after I get it done. The app to schedule your appointments is user friendly, informs you of the cancellation policy, and like that I'm able to pay for the service beforehand as normally go before work . I just moved from Michigan and my hair was ROUGH, like over 6 weeks since my last relaxer, past my shoulders, thick as all get up, dry, in a nutshell... AWFUL! I have been on the hunt for a reliable salon for a few weeks now. Found Time Hair Gallery on Yelp and it seemed like the best/safest/reasonably priced/not shady place to go! I booked an appointment online with Charminique for a relaxer and it was simple and I made it like two days before! Got buzzed in easy, no wait, everyone is friendly, clean place (and free wifi!) and Charminique did magical mystical wonders on my hair and did it in a timely manner! It looks so much better & I have received nothing but compliments on it! She helped set me up on a plan to take care of my hair. I went to THG looking for a place that's not afraid to do natural hair and was pleased to find this place! The shop has a nice atmosphere and the stylist are all very nice. I went and got some color done last July. My hair was in a natural state (short and tiny curls) and I worried that it would need to be straightened to get the color right, but they did a fantastic job on the color and got it just how I wanted. The style was not exactly what I wanted, but I think that was a combination of other factors and it would not stop me from going once more. read more

I am a hair dressers worst nightmare in the sense that I never go in regularly for hair trims, I pull my hair back into buns daily, I don't hydrate enough and occasionally I'll take out my own scissors to chop away. In general I usually only force myself to get my hair cut when I have a wedding to attend, and this time was no exception. In efforts to not be the bridesmaid with horrendous hair at my friend's wedding this weekend, I set out to find a decent hair salon in Chicago that works on damaged African American hair. Little did I know, the same salon my co-worker (with fabulous hair) has been raving about for years was the same shop I "discovered" on my yelp search. Time Hair Gallery's close proximity to the Chicago Loop and awesome reviews is what convinced me to bite the bullet. The area (Morgan Green Line) is super cute and has several yummy restaurants to dine in after you get your hair done (Nando's Peri Peri didn't disappoint). Upon my arrival I was warmly greeted, instructed to hang my coat and offered refreshments. My time was valued and I did not have to wait before my stylist - Victoria came to get me to consult on what I was in for. I clearly laid out my lack of devotion to hair care and she sweetly listened without lecturing like most places have in the past. Victoria is the first stylist that has ever said, "Okay we are going to start with a hair cleanse, I'll give you a deep condition and then we will discuss what I think should come off and what you feel comfortable with." In the past I have always had stylists just wash and then start chopping with little regard to what the client wants, so I was really impressed with her thoughtfulness. My hair cleanse was so lovely, with Victoria perfectly executing that magical tip of the finger pad scratch that only the pros can do. After a solid go around with the shampoo she put in a conditioner that smelled amazing (honestly all of their products smelled great which is such a major bonus) and sat me underneath a steamer. I have never been under a steamer (at least not that I can recall), so I was unsure about whether the steamer was on for the first five minutes. Sure enough just when I was about to ask if it was on I felt the glorious steam start to settle in and laid back to enjoy a relaxing sit-down there for what could have been anywhere from 20-30 minutes (I really suck at guesstimating time). After the steamer stopped Victoria washed out the conditioner and took me back to her station and dried my hair. She showed me the areas that needed to come off and in total only took about 1.5 inches off (much to my surprise since I was prepared to lose more). Prior to Victoria cutting my hair she asked if I wanted to leave with a straight do or with curls and told me I could think about it as she worked. After seeing her magic come to life with the scissors I gave her full reign to do what she wanted and she whipped out some lovely loose curls with her hair straightener. I walked out of that shop with a pretty, light and bouncy lob (long bob) and was feeling myself. Long story short, I am a fan and will be back in eight weeks to see Victoria. This is the worst salon I have ever been to. I asked for a tapered cut, i didn't get a tapered cut at all. The stylist cut most of my hair off, so much that i cant do anything with it. This does not look anything like the picture i was shown, of how it would look. I asked for her to not cut too high in the back and she did it anyway. Seems like she got scissor happy with my hair. I didn't know I was going to be charged $60 for her to twist my hair, plus $25 for her to cut all of my hair off. I barely had any hair left to twist and to charge $60 for that is ridiculous. My appointment was at 5:10, i got there at 4:40 only to leave at 9:20 and my stylist wanted me to stay for an additional 40 minutes to finish it. Can't believe i paid $85 and my hair wasn't even finished because she took that long. I left with my hair still wet and in twists. Can't believe it took that long, when i have no hair! I waited almost an hour to be seen, she cut my hair, washed it, then told me to get under the dryer for only 20 minutes. Seems like she forgot about me, because an hour later another girl comes to get me to finish washing my hair and to blowdry it. The lady had the blowdryer so hot that i saw smoke, i could just see my hair dying from heat damage. My scalp hurts from how hot it was. Then they tell me to sit down and wait for my stylist. An hour later and its finally my turn. Only for her to take about an hour chopping off all my hair, i should have said something but I didn't think my hair was going to be this short! I came in there with a certain hairstyle in mind and was talked into getting something else, only for her not to do that style right. I would have stayed with the original style but she said she didn't know how to do it. I specifically asked her the day before if she could do it, after i sent the picture of it and she said yea. Only for me to get there and she already washed my hair tells me she can't do that style! I'm highly disappointed because now i have no hair and had to pay for something that i didn't want. read more

Well... I've been going to Kenyon to get my hair done for over 15 years. I call her the Michael Jordan of hair care. She can perform magic with natural hair or relaxed hair. She can cut, color, weave, relax, texturize. You name it and she does it well. The bonus, is that she will always make the health of your hair a priority. Your hair will look good and it will be healthy. I also like that she listens to her clients. You will always leave with the hair style you desire. I am such a fan of TIME HAIR GALLERY. I always feel like I'm going to my second home when I go there to get my "butta whipped". Everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - is so darn nice to the clients. They make you feel welcome to the salon, whether you've been going there for 5 years or 5 days, it doesn't matter - you automatically become a part of their famliy. My stylist is THE BEST DAMN STYLIST IN THE CHI - MISS NADLING POLLARD (the crowd roars and claps)...lol. She has been doing my hair for 5 years and I have gone from natural to relaxed to back to natural to semi-relaxed. Each time she takes the time to tell me if it makes sense for me to go down that road or just stay away from it. She also takes the time to do research on different processes for hair and stays educated on the latest styles and trends for hair care. She is so professional and like a sister to me when it comes to her concern regarding the health and condition of my hair. And a weave.....OOOOO WEE!!!! She is a beast on the weave. I promise you wont even look like you are wearing one. She is so talented and God has truly blessed her hands. I've had weaves, color, naturals, and semi-relaxed hair....and each time I leave out of there smiling like I won the lottery.....and looking DAMN good too. Time Hair Gallery is conveniently located in the West Loop and has a professional receptionist who takes good care of you when you're there. Char, the shampoo and blowdry technician, takes great care of me every time. It's a joy not to have the crown of my head overlooked. Nadling can flat iron my natural hair extremely well and I'm always pleased when I (eventually) leave. So why 3 stars? I have been 4 times and have never been serviced completely in less than 4 hours. The wait for me is excessive and exhausting. I've seen all the stylists here work wonders on all kinds of hair, but just don't have the time (or patience) to sit in the shop all day. Maybe if I can get the first appointment on a weekend, I'll see if that makes a difference. I would love to keep going here. read more

I've been coming to TIme Hair Gallery for about 4 years now--well at least as long as Nadling has been there. She is fantastic. My hair is natural (meaning no relaxer--many of her clients are natural) and extremely thick and dense. Nadling is a real miracle worker! She transforms my dry, tight, coarse curls into bouncy, shiny strands--and without the excessive heat used at some salons. I wear my hair natural 90% of the time, and I've not had damage as a result of her heat styling. I find that Nadling is very concerned with the health and integrity of your hair. Many stylists will give you what you want, but maybe not what you need. If your hair is overprocessed, stressed or damaged, Nadling will tell you--so if honesty from your stylist is not what you're looking for, then please don't go to THG. If you are into hair weaving, she does fabulous sew-ins and extensions. She also does relaxers, color, eyelash/brow enhancements, as well as "natural" hairstyles like twist outs, rod sets, etc. If you plan to schedule an appointment, do yourself a favor and BOOK AHEAD. Nadling's appointments tend to be filled 3-4 weeks out. There's a very convenient and easy-to-use link on the THG website where you can book online. I have been frequenting this salon for quite some time, pardon the pun. They have a great barber, George, who always does a great job. Yes, fellas can get their hair done here as well. The staff is very welcoming and easy going, which compliments the sleek yet comfortable feel of the salon. Its the kind of place you don't want to leave after you're out of the chair. This is a great salon conveniently located in the West Loop! The staff is friendly and customer service is great. Having recently moved to Chi, I'm soo happy to have found Time Hair Gallery! Char does my natural twists and they last for at least 2 weeks! She is creative and undeniably talented. I get compliments on my hair all the time--even had someone run me down (literally) to ask who does my hair! Dry hair is not an issue when I leave thanks to their use of Jane Carter products amongst others. I was long overdue for a cut and decided to get one before work. I would never had known this place was here if it weren't for the fact I googled nearby salons. I'm so glad I did. Don't go to the overpriced salons in the neighborhood. Go here Charminique is a magician with a pair of shears. She gave me the most amazing, adorable pixie cut. I've been going to Time Hair since November after watching my friend's damaged hair grow by miles after going there herself. I have VERY fragile hair that I have tried and tried to get growing to no avail. I have not had a relaxer in years, but it still would break off at the ends no matter what I did or didn't do to my hair. Well, now my hair has been introduced to Charminique and it has already grown more in a few months with her than it has in a LONG time. I am usually NOT a frequent salon person, but I will continue going to Time Hair because going has made a true difference in my hair and how I feel about it!!! read more
