The camp host in both LOTS A and B were extremely welcoming, very personable and obviously kept a very tidy ship. Thank You Ellen, Roger and Shannon for everything you did that made our trip just a little better. You're hard work and dedication should be recognized beyond this review. We found the fee to be fairly cheap, considering the location and time of year. It was also a very quiet site, compared to the nearby campsites. It's very close to Starr Valley and Payson etc ..too. It's right off the highway, which is very convenient for running in and out of town, but the spots in the back among the trees still make it seem like you're in nature. The campground is a short walk down the road from Rainbow Lake, which is a nice little spot for fishing. I had spot B14 for the weekend, which was larger than most and right next to the water spicket. There are tons of large pine trees throughout the site to provide shade during the heat of the day and campfire tinder. They sell firewood on site, but I think it's chemically treated and produced tons of smoke. I would turn off the main highway and find an empty plot of land and collect you own wood to use for the fire instead. Be sure not to book a spot right next to the toilets...they're the vault toilets that's basically a big hole in the ground and they stink something rotten in the heat of the day when the wind picks up. Overall, a cheap and cheerful way to get out of the desert heat and explore small town Arizona.

I was…read moreexpecting it to be busy since it was a Sunday and a holiday weekend, but we went in the afternoon and tons of people were leaving when we were parking. The downside to that is that you are hiking in at the hottest part of the day. Which makes the water feel that much more refreshing. The hike isn't hard, you just follow the creek. Some people were in flip flops- which is doable, but the rocks can be quite slippery in places. Bring lots of water. There's some shade, but not tons. Oh- and watch out for the random cow. He's not friendly.

Every year I take myself to Big Lake for a few days to camp and fish by myself to decompress. I sleep in my Jeep, rent a boat and fish from 6am to 6pm. Honestly, I could care less if I even catch fish (although that has never been a problem, the fishing is great if you know the right spots :) ). The staff in the marina store are always knowledgeable, friendly and super helpful. You can mix it up a bit and hit the West Fork of the Little Colorado River and East Fork of the Black River while there, both have breathtaking hikes along them. On a scale of 1 to 10, if I die tomorrow I'd want to visit Big Lake one more time as my last wish.
