This place is absolutely beautiful! There is shade throughout the hike. However, be warned it is not a hike for all ages, there are certain sections where there will be climbing up on rocks and part of the mountain. The water was extremely cold even in August and I would recommend water shoes if you plan on crossing to the falls. Once you get to the falls it is stunning!!

What a beautiful hike! We went with kids for the Labor Day weekend and it was real fun. Lot of rocks to climb and water flowing in between definitely adds to the beauty. There are good spots to stop and relax for picnic as well as campgrounds. We liked that it's not a difficult hike and kids can easily do it. The water is very cool and flowing, pretty refreshing to soak your feet. Parking can be tricky since it's limited. Overall a good day spent

This summer my goal is to hit as many hiking trails that involve water, as in waterfalls, creeks, lakes, and Water Wheel was the 1st on my list. We were camping in the area, but not Water Wheel Campgroup, so this review is about the trail. We arrived at the parking lot on a Thursday afternoon, and it was already busy, but I was lucky enough to find a parking spot in the shade no less, it hiking gods were on our side. This was a beautiful hike. You get to climb up a lil incline. You get creek crossings that if you are into trying to stay on top of the rocks it's about knee deep or waist deep depending on where your crossing. It was already 90 outside so I was not concerned about trying to stay dry. I was in the water. The water was still cold and so clean looking as you make your way up. There was plenty of spots to just hang out by the water, either by the stream or small pools that have gathered. I didn't water shoes but waterproof hiking boots, and those worked for me. I did see some in sandals and tennis shoes too. I would definitely do this trail again!

This place is amazing and so beautiful. The hike is hard I would wear hiking shoes only and be careful! It was a beautiful hike though!

Gorgeous spot along one of Tonto National Forest hiking trails near Payson, AZ. A 90 minute drive from Scottsdale, this place is definitely worth the trip! We had no idea what we were in for after a short 5-10 minute hike but the Falls are absolutely gorgeous and the fresh water is worth a dip.

This review is for the Water Wheel Waterfalls and hiking. The parking lot is small and will fill up quickly as it is a popular spot. The map posted in the parking lot is not useful at all. The waterfall itself is a very close distance from the lot. You can hike the loop, but there are rocks you will have to climb that can get slippery and there's no signage whatsoever.

This was a nice little place to stop and let the little ones get out amd stretch their legs to explore. You can tell by the foot traffic this is a popular spot for a hike. Come prepared! Hiking or good grip tennis shoes is a must. There are a lot of large rocks and boulders to climb. With the soft powder dirt and sand, makes them very slippery of not dressed properly. We made it a ways, but not to either of the water falls. We were not dressed for it, but enjoyed the walk and exploring we did. There is no cell phone service here at all. They have a warning sign about flash flooding. Unfortunately you can't always predict when it is coming, and it may be sunny here but wad raining where the water runs from before you see it so do your weather research before seeking an adventure here. We saw some family made memorials here and spoke with some locals. A large family came here and lost 10 family members due to a flash flood. We also learned of a few close calls locals had experienced as well. Be smart and be safe. This trail is much more technical than the Waterfall Trail at the White Tank Mountains. We did see children with their families. I think our are just a bit too young right now.

Short hike to the waterfall and little bit of climbing over the rocks, it was fun experience. Very pleasant to hangout around the waterfalls. In the summer time in the middle of the day it can be little bit warm, but it's nice to stay in the shade and deep your feet in the water.

What a treat! I was a little unsure of how Water Wheel would be after the July flash flood and the fact that it's a pretty short hike. Forget those two things--this place is awesome! On second thought, don't forget point #1. You don't want to be there during a sporadic monsoon storm in the summer. I thoroughly recommend going in late Sept/early Oct though! The water is still at a temperature that's tolerable for at least enough time to feel refreshed. Getting there when the creek runs high can be a little tough as you do have to cross it a couple times but as long as you think about your route before proceeding you should be fine. The log lives! While a piece of it definitely came off during the storm, there's a good amount still sticking out of the water and now free standing which adds to the fun as it looks like you're on a real-life log ride or something. Definitely the perfect photo op! Please be respectful of those around you and pick up your trash. Please also stick to the public land and for your own good, don't wander into private property (you will be on camera and law enforcement will be called, FYI).

Adventure awaits! Beautiful easy hike for my daughter and i. Drove hour 40 min from home. Took the paved road @ 15 min to the Water wheel sign. The creek was running and several deep pools of water to swim and cool off. The end is the very best. A large tree with cut notched leans against a natural rock face. Icy water that feels like heaven on a 93 degree day. Bring lots of water, snacks, water shoes and please take your trash and dog waste with you. The middle part of the path can be a tricky trail if your not in shape or have balance issues

    Main pools and accessible waterfall.

We didn't camp at the campground so I can't speak to that, but we did do the commonly travelled Water Wheel Falls hike up to where there's an accessible waterfall. We really enjoyed ourselves! The day we came to do this hike, we ended up here because we were going to hike Fossil Creek (which we've done before) but it was at full capacity. This was our second choice. The hike itself is maybe a mile and a half in - for awhile it's all underbrush, then you have to go up and over a lot of rocks with some pretty sheer drops next to them. Some bigger waterfall stuff here, nothing accessible for an average person though. Definitely keep an eye on small kiddos if you bring them along. After the big cliff type area you have to cross a deeper part of the stream/river, and after that it's all jumping across rocks in and next to the stream until you get to the waterfall. The waterfall itself is neat. The time of year we came there wasn't all that much water, but it's more than enough to swim in at the bottom of the waterfall. Many people were sliding down the falls themselves because it's such a flat rock. Super fun! There's even a big log next to it with notches in it that makes for an easy to climb up (if not slightly slippery) ladder. Basically, it's fun for what it is - a short 2-3 mile round trip hike with falls at the end and a place to swim around in when its hot outside. If you're looking for something at all difficult, check out Fossil Creek and the significantly longer hikes there.

Waterfall at the end was worth it!

Parking was easy and trail is good for beginners! Was a little to cold to jump in the water but good enough to put your toes in! Cant wait to come back again!

As for camping, Water Wheel is not the place. It's on the side of the road and people are always coming and going. But for HIKING WATERFALLS, this is the place. The first giant waterfall, you can crawl under and it's soooo cool! This is a winter hike and too hot in the summer!

Most of them are in the desert, with little shade and oppressive heat, but if you live in Arizona that probably doesn't stop you. Based on its size and preservation, there are stunning vistas of the Forest even a short drive from the Phoenix area. Describing it as a "forest" is a deceptive term. It is more of a National Desert. Acknowledging that point does not make it a less impressive place to explore. Arguably, the panoramic views are even more impressive in the desert because there are no trees blocking your line of sight. One of the more surprising aspects of the forest is how few Arizona citizens take advantage of the recreation opportunities. Phoenix is a megacity, but if drive 30 minutes away, you can have a 10 mile trail all to yourself. This means either Phoenix citizens are not into the outdoors or there are enough trails for everyone to spread out. One trail in particular that my brother, wife, and I were able to explore by ourselves was the Ballantine Trail. It's halfway between Mesa and Payson on highway 87. The first couple of miles suffered significant burn damage a year earlier. This was quite disappointing at first. As we continued hiking, we were able to appreciate the signs of transition from burned and blackened landscape to fresh grass and bush rejuvenation. The return hike along the side of the mountain, rather than over the top, yielded one of the most stunning views of grass and saguaro cacti that I have seen.

It was an hour ride, but I think it was so worth it! My dog really enjoyed it! What I loved was that the facility and trail were clean and well maintained. There was a restroom station and a marker/direction for a subtrail at the entrance from a parking lot. The trail itself was clear and not crowded at all. There were just 2 other people we met during a weekday late morning during our visit for an hour there. My dog really enjoyed roaming around the trail and we loved that we didn't see any trash at all. While the trail was a bit unleveled, the path was clear! Bonus too that it was a free hike/walk for us, including parking! The only minus was that there was no cell phone signal (T-mobile/Mint Mobile), so I was very wary that we might get lost if we didn't keep track of ourselves well enough..so we mostly stayed on the trail and didn't go in too far. But...it is a wonderful place to enjoy the nature for sure!

Almost all of the land around Payson is under the U.S. Forest Service or by tribal governments so much of the land is still natural for hiking, horseback riding, fishing and hunting activities. The Tonto Natural Bridge is the largest known travertine natural bridge in the world, is just northwest of Payson in Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. Payson is also a good place for rock hunters. There are quartz crystals, geodes, agate and onyx. In town, there are so many restaurants and shops to explore. The area has three golf courses, two being private country clubs. Mazatzal Casino, a tribal casino, is on the south end of the city.
