View of the rim

I have been to the Rim Lakes area twice this season already and look forward to yet another visit. This section of Arizona, which is between Payson and Heber, is absolutely stunning! The Mogollon Rim ("muggy-own") is the big attraction. Depending on your location, you will find that the rim extends thousands of feet. You can also find some sheer cliffs here, decorated with dense pines. Lovely. And it is full of campgrounds, lakes and streams along the 260. It is ideal for camping, hiking and trail walking. I have stayed at Sinkhole already, and have also checked out Christopher Creek and Tonto, among others. I am especially fond of the elevation -- 7,000+. That means you get very cool temperatures, and you also get pretty much around the clock access to ponderosa and pine trees. I hear that Woods Canyon Lake is the most popular lake in the Rim. That appears entirely true. The lake, and the are surrounded it, are hugely populated. Total party town. But you can find other, easily accessible campgrounds in the nearby area that are well equipped for those of us who like a more rustic and certainly a more quiet space. And a couple of tips: When driving toward the Rim just outside of Payson, be very attentive to speed posting. There are speed cameras along the highway just outside of the town. Be sure to check out the Rim Lake Vista Trail. The views are stunning! Bear Canyon Lake is less populated than Woods Canyon, but expect a little hike down to the bank.

The rim is a true geological wonder hosting sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic rock. The Mogollon Rim has been a favorite place for us to camp at over the years. Take the turn off to Woods Canyon lake and follow along turn off to a dirt road. We have many fond memories from our camping trips. It is free to camp and is a first come campsites. Plenty of boondock camping sites along the way to the rim or stay at one of the many campgrounds. The evenings do get cold even in the summer so pack accordingly. If you're not into camping it's a great day trip from Phoenix with lots of hiking and exploring opportunities. Great for pets, kids, fishing at the lake, hiking, wildlife watching, or just a relaxing and beautiful drive to soak in Mother Nature.

Got some tips on bait and purchased a few more lures. A couple of small snow packs still visible, and a few snow flakes in the morning. Caught and released a nice rainbow trout. Saw a bald eagle fly by and enjoyed the scenery. Had lunch near a scenic outlook. Place is likely crowded on weekends but that is expected, given the location and beauty of this place.

This 260 acre lake is located on the White Mountains Apache Indian Reservation near Pinetop…read moreLakeside. It is in Arizona's White Mountains at a high altitude of about 8,200 feet. The lake is 300 acres with and average depth of 40 feet and a maximum depth of 100 feet. White Mountain Apache Permit is required to fish, as well as, a tribe boat stamp if you plan to fish from a boat. You also need a regular fishing license from the Game and Fish Department. Thanks to Phoenix area Community Ambassador Joyce W., who recommended Hawley Lake! So my husband and I went on a reconnaissance mission to see the lake and check out the facilities. Hawley Lake is simply beautiful. It is surrounded by high mountain peaks covered with thick forests of spruce, pine and aspen. The lake has Brown, Brook, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. You will see wildlife at Hawley Lake and likely hear squirrels running around, owls and possibly wolves howling, roaming the distant, closed areas of the reservation. On the drive in we passed cattle grazing and we even passed a bear on our drive in to the lake. I love Hawley lake. It is rustic and natural and beautiful. They do not allow swimming or gas motors on the lake-electric only-keeping the lake pristine, as possible. Fishing and boating is more expensive because if the special permits. Camping is basic, no hookups; picnic tables are at most campsites, potable water faucets, and vault toilets are what you get. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilities like a store or marina are not available here. You have quiet, beautiful sights and dark skies at night.
