My kids loved it here so much we came here twice in a week! After fishing (quite unsuccessfully) in nearby lakes, it was so fun for the kids to fish for trout here in this pond. We ate the 6 rainbow trout for dinner and it was wonderful! My daughter especially loved the tire swing, and my son is hoping we come back soon and rent a cabin. It was super easy to park and sit on the shaded benches. Grandparents joined too. We brought a cooler of food, and the owner even cleaned out the fish the kids caught. read more

I would have given this place a full 5 stars if it weren't for the owner... PROPERTY: the property itself is breathtaking! It has such a peaceful feel to it, lots of shade, and a wide, open, green field where people can have venues, kids can run around and play, have a picnic, or just hang out. The fish hatchery part of it is also very nice, which you can fish and feed the trout. We came to this little spot not only to feed the trout, but to allow our kids to run around and enjoy the outdoors/weather. THE OWNER: While we were sitting at one of the picnic tables, the owner came up to us and bluntly asked us (in a rude tone) "are you fishing?" I informed her that we were planning on feeding the trout, but were letting the kids run around and play a bit first given they had been sitting in the car for hours. She told us (again, in a rude tone) that the "property is only used for those who are fishing." We were not aware of that nor was there anything in the area stating it was only used for fishers. When I asked her where I can buy the fish food, she pointed her finger to the location and said, "over there" (with a little attitude). My husband and I could not believe her attitude and her lack of customer service in communicating with people. While we were feeding the trout, my husband noticed her sitting along an edge watching us and everyone that was on the property. We started to feel uncomfortable given what she had told us about non-fishers not being allowed on property. Therefore, we ended up leaving. OVERALL: the property itself is worth visiting. Lots of great areas to get photos, fish, feed the fish, and see beautiful sceneries! My kids had a good time feeding the fish and enjoyed running around the green field area. On the other hand, know you are only allowed to be on the property if you pay to fish or feed the trout. Otherwise, expect to be treated disrespectfully by the owner. SMH. read more

This is cute. Came here because the fish hatchery further up the road was already closed. I was prepared from other views to have quarters and that the owner wasn't friendly. It's a nice area with a pretty drive. We had quarters to feed the fish. Come with quarters and low expectations of customer service. It was fun to feed the trout. read more

Upon trying to find an easy way for my kids to catch some fish, we Stumbled across this place on our way to the hatchery. And definitely hit the jackpot. This is definitely not a spot for everyone. If you want a quick fish fix than this is your spot! Show up, give them your name and get your bucket, rod, net and bait. Head over to the pond and toss your rod into the pond. The fish instantly start biting you just have to hook them. No throwing back but once you are done take your bucket of fish to the same spot you checkin and in the matter of minutes your fish are measured, cleaned and iced. At $1 per inch be prepared for high priced meat, but I would have it any other way. After 4 12inch+ fish we were out of there in under an hour and had the rest of the day to play! We will definitely be returning, hopefully next time to reserve the guest cabin that sleeps 9 at $275/ night. read more

Like others have mentioned, the man running this place is incredibly rude. An honest tip to others, please bring a tape measure with you. The cost is $1.00 per inch per fish. We took one fish and were charged $15. They do not measure in front of you. We had a tape measurer in the car and the fish was only 12 inches long. We were overcharged by $3. Our boys, 5 and 7, loved this place. They each caught three fish over the course of 40 minutes which is perfect for children--who like to fish but have short attention spans. Beautiful oak and pine trees provided shade on a lush grassy lawn where we picnicked afterwards. Rancho Tonto provides poles and bait, clean the fish for you, and even provides kits if you want to grill your fish up on site. The "fish tender" was a very nice lady and gave the boys a fish anatomy lesson when they showed an interest in her cleaning the fish. The whole experience cost $56 which we felt was a reasonable price for the entertainment and some tasty trout to grill up tonight! If you have been to the Rainbow Trout Farm in Sedona the prices are comparable. Sedona's fish are bigger but Rancho Tonto's property is much nicer and there are fewer people. read more

Had heard great things about this place from a friend. Drove up from Phoenix with our grandkids only to find a handwritten sign on the gate that they were closed. Website says they are open everyday from 10-4. We also called and got a recording that said they were open. So based on website and recording we figured they would be open. The place was beautiful. The setup, The concept. But I have never in my life felt discrimination until Saturday. From the second we went up to find out how things worked the man that runs the place was rude. In our car was 5 adults and 3 toddlers. The man said you could get one fishing pole (really with three toddlers) I proceeded to get drinks out of the fridge for us all, he said you do know those are$1.50 each. I didn't think too much about it and said yes I'm aware. He continued to say you can't catch and release, every fish you catch you have to pay $1 per inch so we should take our time. I just ignored it and thought to myself we are here for the kids. My husband and cousins were helping the kids out, I sat on one of the lounge chairs they had out there to take pictures, the man walked by and said Hola... I just smiled and said good morning. About 15 min later another family came and that's when I totally got it. He was over there talking with them and laughing. We were waiting for the fish to be cleaned and the kids were exploring the beautiful area and he just kept looking at them with a disgusted face. This was the first time to fish for our kiddos, 3 and 6 years old. The location is a small man made pond heavily stocked with Idaho trout between 9 and 15 inches long. The fish are very hungry and take to the baited hook very easily. This is by no means challenging fishing. If you can put the bait on the hook, you will catch a fish guaranteed. There is no patience required like stream or lake fishing which was good for our young boys. The down side, it's not catch and release, its catch and keep/you own it at a dollar an inch. For us we caught 3 fish; 13", 14" and 14.5" which equaled about $42! We didn't want to chance catching another fish and being out another 10-15 dollars. The rest of the property is very nice with green lawns, shade trees and plenty of seating to watch other people fishing. The equipment which is simply a bamboo stick with some fishing line and wood bob and the hook at the end of the line. We also got a net. All the equipment is included so basically you only pay a dollar an inch for he fish you catch. Once we decided we caught enough we returned to the main house to have the fish clean, gutted and bagged with ice to take home. We also noticed they had grills for cooking on site. We just enjoyed a great weekend here! Took the grandkids 3 and 2 for their first fishing trip. We did rent the guest house cabin for the weekend which was awesome! Very nice, has everything you need. The owners are very nice and made us feel welcome. The fishing was very memorable for the boys as they both got to catch a fish. The grounds are beautiful and just a great place to relax. We even enjoyed the fire pit and s'mores our last night there. A must see. We will be back again! read more

I normally don't do reviews but I felt the need to share after leaving quite upset. The place was very beautiful,green and clean we were a group of 20 ppl. After catching our fish we proceeded to getting them cleaned and to pay. When we asked if we could grill them there he didn't seem to like the idea n said "I don't want a mess on my grill" then he said we could grill them but his face expressions were saying the complete opposite. I said if it's not ok we can go it's ok.....he got more upset after I said that, the man that runs this place must not know anything about costumer service he was extremely rude to our entire group. We came here during a camping trip in Payson. The grounds are beautiful and there is a little pond well stocked with fish. The kids had a lot of fun even though they caught their fish in less than 30 seconds. I don't know if the fish are not regularly fed but they bite immediately. The only blazing con is the owner watching you the entire time. I guess it's to be sure that no one throws a fish back but it does interfere with the overall experience. Maybe a video monitor would make more sense for them. They would have all activity recorded and wouldn't have to stand there staring at customers. The owner seemed pretty grumpy and unhappy but the lady that cleaned the fish was very nice and personable. I don't think we would come back again but I'm glad the kids had fun. read more
