Three or four tables have power receptacles, and the staff is friendly. Everything about this place says that it should be a 5-star, daily visit, favorite. Except it's not. Don't get me wrong. I find myself going there more and more. It is just somehow less relaxing than a starbucks. On fire. I can't pick just what it is. The inconsistent décor, the stripmall flooring, or utilitarian seating arrangement. It just lacks character. It's a fine enough place. And I really would suggest it to anybody. I really do like it. I just can't love it.

OMG - this bakery sells the best slightly sweet/dense bread ever! The bread is called "Lagos Loaf"…read moreand comes in white, cinnamon raisin and whole wheat for $4.50 a loaf. It's a generous portion of what looks like those familiar perfectly square loaves that you make tea sandwiches with the crust cut off. The owners are Nigerian and bread is a huge thing in their culture and I can see why with this bread. I chose the white Lagos loaf, which is a dense yet super soft bread with a slightly sweet flavour to it. It will make you skip that multi-grain and fall in love with white bread again! This loaf is best shared with others or else you will end up eating many slices of this. I am fine eating it plain or toasted with butter but I'm sure it will make a nice sandwich bread as well. This place also sells cinnamon buns, Scotch eggs, cookies, brownies and meat pies. I had a meat pie $3 which made for a nice lunch - the meat filling had some lovely ground beef and spices with only a very subtle heat to it. The pastry shell was too thick for my liking but otherwise it was good. The store is pretty small didn't have a large showcakes of the bakery items other than the Lagos Loaf which is their main selling item. This place is located in a stripmall with private parking available. Open Tues-Friday 11 am-6 pm and Sat 11 am -4 pm.

You can also ask about frequent buyer card (if they still have it) for even more savings. They roast their coffee in house, and large number of patrons guarantees that it is always fresh. I also recently discovered that you can pre-order your beans in advance. The advantage, ones you know what type of beans you like, is that you'll have your favourite beans ready for you even if they don't have it in roasted stock. Let's say you like their "cowboy" blend and want to buy it, sometimes you'll show up and they're fresh out. Now if you pre-order your blend, they'll roast a small batch just for you. Note: I'm reviewing this place for their coffee beans *only*. I prefer my home made cup of coffee to pretty much any cafe I've tried.

Recently, Winnipeg is definitely going through it's slew of independent coffee houses. So lucky for…read moreall of us who enjoy coffee and want an alternative to Starbucks and a desire to support local independent businesses. Parlour Coffee on Main Street was pretty much the first onto the scene last year with it's gourmet coffee and ultra minimalistic interior design. MAKE / Coffee + Stuff opened in Dec '12, is a very modern, sleek and minimalistic coffeehouse that looks more like a modern art space than coffee hangout. But that's probably because the owner is an environmental design instructor at U of M's faculty of architecture. The place is a bit hidden unless you are looking for it as it's in the same strip as Kristina's on Corydon. This place is situated within a few steps of Starbucks and Second Cup on Corydon. The space is completely white, with design books lined along the left side, several wood crate like coffee tables, a few minimalistic chairs, hanging industrial lights in a space that's both raw yet designed. The espresso counter in the back of the space has a small and focused menu: espresso, latte, cappucino, mocha, americano, slow drip and san pellegrino. Espressos are $2.50, lattes are $4 and mochas are $4.50 and are served in one size. I would hazard to guess that the mocha I had was maybe 250 ml or a short in Starbucks world. I like smaller sized coffees but for those who love grandes and such, it might seem like you're not getting as much drink. It wasn't my favourite mocha but the did use freshly grated callebaut chocolate. The espresso grind felt a bit dark and was not as smooth as I prefer. But coffee is such a subjective drink so I'd go back and try a slow drip to give this place another try. Nonethless, the best part of this space is the concept behind the coffee house - which is to support the local design community. It's meant to be a hub for not only the local design culture but for others to engage with the art by being a retail and exhibition venue. Apparently, designers work the espresso bar at MAKE.
