We LOVE Hanks!!!…read more When we arrived just a little before 9am on a Saturday morning, there were about 10 people ahead of us and about another 5 waiting for their order. The place is truly a bakery haven! They have so much stuff, from croissants, quiches, pies, sandwiches, sausage rolls, cookies, breads, danishes, scones, cakes, etc! We found it so difficult to choose but went with their sausage rolls, quiche and latte. The staff were so friendly and wearing their beautiful warm smiles. We drove out to Mill Bay and had our breakfast by the water, it was magical with the sunshine. LOVED the sausage roll; so moist and flavourful. The pastry was so flaky and I'm not even kidding when I say I wanna go back again tomorrow!!! The quiche was also delicious. It had lots of potatoes and was very filling. Again, the pastry was delicious. The latte was also nutty and velvety! Such a beautiful experience! Parking was tight but we found one shortly after we arrived. Hanks have parking stalls reserved for its customers, so be sure to check and park at the right spot. It is free.

The Cowichan Valley has so many little food finds that make it special. Saison is at the top of…read morethe list. Driving along one of the country roads in North Cowichan you will find many local vineyards. Saison is in fact a vineyard but they don't specialize in wine tasting. It appears they do grow grapes but sell them to other producers on the island or perhaps they create their own family wine. What they do specialize in is a wonderful bakery. Upon entering the gate you are faced with a beautiful vineyard to the right and a lovely country home with meticulously landscaped grounds to the left. Continue up the driveway to the parking area above a little cottage. Walk down the 10 steps to the patio that overlooks a beautiful field of gardens and Mt. Prevost sticking out in the distance. In the summer there are little tables set out all over the patio along with a small stand filled with fresh produce grown in the gardens you see below. All the produce is picked daily during the season and for sale to the public. The place is filled with lots of locals and on bikers. So many bikers will make this a stop on their bike tour of the island. They come here to enjoy the many delicious baked goods: breads, rolls, pastries, pizza, etc. They also can enjoy coffee, tea and soups. During the summer if you can get your hands on some of their gazpacho you will become a fan! I want their recipe for this amazing nectar of the tomato gods. I would love to see Saison have an evening on the patio. They could hire a musician, pour wine and serve some of their lovely bread with local charcuterie and cheese. Maybe one day but for now you can enjoy all they have to offer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Saison has a great formula and is certainly a destination spot if you come to Vancouver Island for any reason.

They're focused on Italian specialty items but have a mix of other goods there too. Staff are always friendly & are very patient with my packing logistics so I can carry everything myself while using my cane. There's seating inside & on the patio. I'm yet to go early enough in the day to enjoy the patio or on a nicer weather day but I do appreciate the very sturdy ramp up to the restaurant/shop doors & patio. Decent amount of parking too. Quick to drive to from Duncan & I first noticed this place when I took Lake Road for different views. Immediately off the main road but pay close attention to google maps (or whatever you use) when you're driving to the restaurant. As you see the sign & restaurant after you should be slowing down to turn into driveway. By my third visit, I knew what to look for & I didn't have to circle back. Looking forward to stopping here in 2026 & trying more items off the menu.
