The ice cream shop was open next door and connected for seating but idk if that is a constant or just an occasional thing. Not a ton of orderable food options but lots of packaged ready-to-go items and a few bakery goods. I got a raspberry cheesecake fir around $6 and enjoyed throughly. Water in reusable cups was provided, everything seemed to be reusable or compostable aside from saran wrap which is a nice touch and always appreciated. Nice to pop into and look around at the local goods (lake cowichan milk and Shanti chai for example sold here).

There are food like salad and sandwich available in the chiller section. You can also get milk, eggs, rice, condiments and specialty products here. The special stuff is also great to buy as gifts. Then you will be dazzled by the baked goods. The cookies, cakes, tarts all looked so good. I bought Nanaimo bar, strawberry macaron, butter tart and hazelnut puddle cookie. They were good and my favorite is the cookie. The texture was different. It was a bit hollow crunchy with real pieces of hazelnuts in it. The butter tart was equally yummy. Perfect with tea or coffee. This is a place I will visit again if I am in Ladysmith.

Red's has a kind of small town bakery feel, with old-fashioned almost eclectic decor, perhaps 60s/70s retro. Unlike some of the other bakeries, they prepackage some of their desserts in plastic, so it's difficult to tell how fresh they are. I suppose Nanaimo Bars keep well in the first place. We ended up trying Nanaimo bars from three different places, with my notes for Red's as below: Nanaimo Bar ($6) - This Nanaimo bar is much taller than the other two, probably around 50% taller than bar 3 and a full double of bar 2. It cuts very smoothly without much flaking off. The crumb base underneath is smooth, indicating that the coconut fibers are well blended to reduce strand length. It's almost like an Oreo base, with heavy Dutch processed cocoa flavor. There should be nuts mixed in, but they are crushed so finely that I can't really tell what nut is used. People on social media complain about the bottom layer, but I actually love it. For the other layers, the top icing is really sweet. It has a heavily roasted chocolate flavor and by far the darkest in color. The middle layer just tastes like standard icing. It's sweet but I think less so than the other bars. (4/5) Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the Nanaimo Bar from Red's more than both other bakeries. I think it's pretty good in quality and while sweet, has the heavy cocoa elements of the cookie base to help balance things out a bit. Washroom - I didn't see any available for customers.

Driving along one of the country roads in North Cowichan you will find many local vineyards. Saison is in fact a vineyard but they don't specialize in wine tasting. It appears they do grow grapes but sell them to other producers on the island or perhaps they create their own family wine. What they do specialize in is a wonderful bakery. Upon entering the gate you are faced with a beautiful vineyard to the right and a lovely country home with meticulously landscaped grounds to the left. Continue up the driveway to the parking area above a little cottage. Walk down the 10 steps to the patio that overlooks a beautiful field of gardens and Mt. Prevost sticking out in the distance. In the summer there are little tables set out all over the patio along with a small stand filled with fresh produce grown in the gardens you see below. All the produce is picked daily during the season and for sale to the public. The place is filled with lots of locals and on bikers. So many bikers will make this a stop on their bike tour of the island. They come here to enjoy the many delicious baked goods: breads, rolls, pastries, pizza, etc. They also can enjoy coffee, tea and soups. During the summer if you can get your hands on some of their gazpacho you will become a fan! I want their recipe for this amazing nectar of the tomato gods. I would love to see Saison have an evening on the patio. They could hire a musician, pour wine and serve some of their lovely bread with local charcuterie and cheese. Maybe one day but for now you can enjoy all they have to offer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Saison has a great formula and is certainly a destination spot if you come to Vancouver Island for any reason.
