As you stroll out of such venues, if you're lucky, often you'll find a little latina lady in her 40s, handling a jerry-rigged shopping cart, with a hot oven pan used as a hot plate, stacked on top of the shopping cart, with a disposable flame underneath. Laid across that pan, you'll find several sizzling hotdogs wrapped in bacon, along side sizzling onions and jalapenos, and some warm hotdog buns. There are often several carts in various corners; sometimes they compete for your business, sometimes, everyone falls in line. So you can't attend any event at Crypto.com Arena without walking by (or better yet, sniffing the delicious aroma of the hot dogs and hot grilled onions from the many food carts blanketing Star Plaza, LA Live, Chick Hearn Court, and Figueroa Street. Many come with the intention of getting a TJ Dog, many get talked into it by those selling it, and many succumbed to the munchies. No matter the reason, they're more tasty than they smell (if that's possible). Many have some hot dogs in all stages of their cook state (cooked enough, some char, lots of char, almost overcooked). A lot of the hot dog vendors have their PayPal/Venmo QR codes taped onto their cart. You can't tell the difference between the TJ dogs sold here and the ones in Tijuana. They're particularly amazing if the vendor is set up on a corner, it should be at least midnight, and you should be a couple of sheets to the wind. I don't know if it's the car exhaust marinade or the lard cooking ingredients, but those damn Dirty Dogs are life-changingly good! (Make sure you get it with all the fixings... Calories don't count after midnight.) Whether it's outside the clubs in Hollywood, or you're celebrating the Lakers win outside the Staples Center, those trusty carts are a godsend to LA food lovers like me! Now to find those bad boys, if you're good, you can locate a stand by scouring the city for the queue on corner - the clear indicator of the food stand. But if you're freaking awesome (like my fatty friend, Ellen Sue C.), you can simply stick your head out the car window and sniff the nighttime air to find them. If you have a love for hot dogs and bacon, Tijuana Dogs is serendipity. On a Saturday night in January we stumbled upon heaven on a cart outside of the Seven Grand (515 W 7th St). At this point in the evening we'd hit up four different bars and were headed back to the hotel when the glorious smell of bacon, grilling hot dogs and sweet onions reached our noses. We got a dog to split for $5 and it quickly became obvious that we should have each gotten our own -- it was well, well worth the cash. The location of these street carts seems to be a bit random or at the very least roaming so I think it was just luck that we happened to find it. Though we had a lot of really good food during our eight day trip to California, this TJ dog really epitomized everything that is California food culture -- comfort food, a little bit Mexican, reminds me of home...and probably organic, locally sourced onions (ok, maybe not that last one). This is one of those places in the city where it would be easy to convince an outsider that Los Angeles is not a part of the United States. This my friends is where you can still find a Tijuana Dog aka Danger Dog. The term "danger dog" originates from this form of hot dog's reputation as being of cheap quality (or presumed low quality, as it is usually sold by unlicensed street vendors). Not quite Mexican and not quite American, the bacon-wrapped hot dog, has a curious romance about it. You can smell one from blocks away. At first, I was very skeptical to eat street vendor food. I mean, do you buy movies, electronics, etc. from street vendors? Hell nah, because that shit is probably fake, a rip off, or has some kinda defect. Same with food, it's probably fake meat, or they rip us off by using poor quality items, or the meat is expired. You honestly don't know what they do with the meat or how they prepare it, but you can say the same for some restaurants because you're not watching every move the cooks make. So I had the hell with! It was at the Anime Expo over the summer at the LA Convention Center when I first had one of these 'bad boys'. (Side note: I'm not a fan of 'japanese anime' but I was there because my friends are.) First off, I don't like bacon, they're greasy and just don't taste good. However, these hot dogs were pretty good though because I couldn't taste the bacon. I ate about three of these during my time in Downtown LA over the summer. The first one I had, the guy (with a truck with this young daughter) charged me $5 for a dog with a can of soda and chips. The people with the cart charge $4 for just a dog. I got lucky the last time I ate one because I only had $3 and they said that it was fine. So overall, these are good, but just so expensive that makes you wonder if they're really worth it. They are if you have nothing to eat, but normally if I want a hot dog, I would just go to Costco. Dude... So my buddy calls me up the night before and he's like, I got an extra ticket to both Eric church shows at Staple center tomorrow and the next. He also had an Airbnb booked. I just had to first, work all night to get my hours in, second.. drive 5 hours to my home town. Third.. drive from my hometown to LA which was another 11 hours away. These hotdogs are amazing! My husband bought me one at Hollywood after he got kicked out at Club Avalon. They said he was drunk, but bouncers lies, lol. All I know was that I was sooo hungry! This was the first thing that I smelled coming out. Dehydrated from alcohol and shots, and all I can think about is that these hotdogs are beyond the definiton of delicious! I had like two, then I got sick from the onions. Too much onions I think. I felt like vominting afterwards, but would I purchase this again? HELL YEAH!!!! It's that good, like health concerns?
