All of the goodies on one grill

If you have a love for hot dogs and bacon, Tijuana Dogs is serendipity. On a Saturday night in January we stumbled upon heaven on a cart outside of the Seven Grand (515 W 7th St). At this point in the evening we'd hit up four different bars and were headed back to the hotel when the glorious smell of bacon, grilling hot dogs and sweet onions reached our noses. We got a dog to split for $5 and it quickly became obvious that we should have each gotten our own -- it was well, well worth the cash. The location of these street carts seems to be a bit random or at the very least roaming so I think it was just luck that we happened to find it. Though we had a lot of really good food during our eight day trip to California, this TJ dog really epitomized everything that is California food culture -- comfort food, a little bit Mexican, reminds me of home...and probably organic, locally sourced onions (ok, maybe not that last one). Regardless, it was our good fortune to bump into it and good fortune that I would wish for everyone else in LA, too.

Hot Dog! Hot Dog! Hot Dog!

(spanish accent) Hawt Dowg! Hawt Dowg! Hawt Dowg! and the smell of sizzling bacon calls your name as you step outside of LA Convention Center or Staples after a convention, game or the like. You can also find these tasty treats calling your name after a night on the town after partying it up at a club in downtown Los Angeles or Hollywood. As you stroll out of such venues, if you're lucky, often you'll find a little latina lady in her 40s, handling a jerry-rigged shopping cart, with a hot oven pan used as a hot plate, stacked on top of the shopping cart, with a disposable flame underneath. Laid across that pan, you'll find several sizzling hotdogs wrapped in bacon, along side sizzling onions and jalapenos, and some warm hotdog buns. There are often several carts in various corners; sometimes they compete for your business, sometimes, everyone falls in line. Whatever the situation, you're either drunk or severely excited to have one or five. "You want Eryting?" (meaning grilled onions, green bell peppers, ketchup, mayo) , the hotdog lady asks? Yes, as you get ready to hand her your $5 bill getting ready to devour your hotdog immediately after the exchange. Tijuana Dogs are a Downtown Los Angeles staple. They are like cheesedogs to Philly, reindeer dogs to Alaska, Halaal carts to New York, deep dish pizzas to Chicago. I've seen the police come by and snatch a poor lady's cart once. She just walked off as if nothing happened. Poor lady, the cops need to leave these people alone.

The first time I went on a weekday in the middle of the day, so it was super empty and not the best because nothing was being made fresh- the meats and potatoes were kind of just sitting in bins so although the flavor was there, the cooled down temperatures really affected the taste. HOWEVER, I visited a few more times after that, these times all late at night, which really turned my experience around. I think at those times there were a lot more people and long lines, so everything was being made fresh and it being hot just made the food taste so so much better. I love how the toppings are all self-serve, and the hot potato is my favorite side. Carne asada, lengua, and al pastor are my go-tos. You'll want to add hellaaa green sauce to everything- I could literally drink that stuff straight. Love the big easy parking lot here, I'll mention that I saw a few security people checking all the cars and plates so I wouldn't recommend trying to park here and walk somewhere else!

I was able to snag two tacos for $4.50 that tided me over until dinner time. Now: bring your car because there's no place to sit! I arrived on foot, so dined standing up. Quite a variety of means - I'm a "safe" eater and enjoyed pollo and asada. I loved the self-serve salsas; the green salsa was delish and had a good little kick to it. Happy to have found this spot, and want to come back! 2026: 32/100

Today I was driving North on San Pedro to run work errands, not even thinking of bbq. But then it hit me, the smell and smoke through my window and I turned left to see the pop-up! Corner of 15th & San Pedro, set up is across the street from the LA Face mart. If you get near by I am sure you will see it or smell it:) Swung by after my lunch time errands, excited to get me some briskets again. But not today... Only the ribs, hot links, chicken were available this day. No worries, went for the $10 hot links to try something different. The hot links were good, the inside texture was smooth, don't think I've had this kind before. It definitely has kick, and definitely need to eat with bread. For my weak taste buds, it was too spicy and it literally took a lot of sweat, but ate it all up since still addicting. Been about 10 mins since I cleaned up, but I am still kinda perspiring, lol. I think for me personally, the hot links is 3 stars, since I can't enjoy as much while pouring sweat from my head. But then I'm weak (I pour sweat eating the mild green salsa from King Taco for reference). If you can handle the heat, I think it would be a 4. Hot links seem like a good item to get for the $5 sandwich. But then not sure if you get that crack potato salad! Will be on the lookout next time to see if they have briskets.

I delayed writing this review to really think through, and now I will confidently say--these are…read moreeasily the best tacos I've ever had. Having been to so many taco stands, I think what makes Tire Shop Taqueria really stand out are the right-off-the-grill charcoal-grilled meats, the freshly made tortillas literally in front of you as you are waiting on line, and the free guacamole that comes with each taco. The ordering process is like any other taco stand, though one difference is here the salsas/guacamole are all handled by the staff. If you'd like more of something, just ask them instead of reaching for the ladle yourself. There is a separate area though for grilled onions/peppers and radishes you can serve yourself. I got the asada, chorizo, cabeza, and al pastor, and they were all so good. The asada and chorizo are specifically grilled over charcoal, and that flavor really shines through. I loved how meaty and tender the cabeza was too, and the classic al pastor hit the spot. They have large communal tables setup, so it is a great friendly vibe to enjoy your meal I will say, the surrounding area is not the best in LA, especially given how the taco stand is only open at night. The parking lot is quite small, so I parked on a side street that had some abandoned cars, but of course, if you are in/from LA, this is not that new for us. I would hesitate if I am a tourist though to make it out here. Anyhow, the food really is worth it here, and I can't wait to be back!

We only got the carne asada and the al pastor but it was so good we went back in line for seconds. The meat was very flavorful - the carne asada was thin but still very tender. The al pastor, I think uses a fattier cut than some other places but keeps it from drying out. The tacos were leaking meat juices still. The surrounding streets are quite dark at night but the parking lot the stand is in, is well lit and there is a covered seating area. We went on Thanksgiving weekend and there were maybe always 15-20 ppl in line at any given time. I imagine there are longer lines in the summer.

If you don't see it at first, just look for the bigger van where they bring in the stuff, and you'll see people working. But even with the minimal working parts, these tacos are the best. You order up at the grill. The grill table is complete with a giant kebab of al pastor pork, chicken, beans, cheese, and grilled onions. Once you say what you'd like, they make it up super fast. (We had tacos al pastor and a burrito al pastor). On the table behind the grill, there is someone rolling out the individual tortillas (which are fabulous and obviously super fresh). After they make your choice of dinner, you step to the side to pay (cash only) for what you've ordered. They also have horchata at this point, which is not to be missed and a huge cup is only $2. After you've gotten your food, you can walk over to another table. This is filled with salsas, spicy avocado sauce, onions, Pico, cucumber, and limes (I feel like I'm forgetting something). So you add your own in whatever quantities. Make sure next time you're in town to stop by here. I saw other food trucks in the area but I can say that this made my evening better FOR SURE.
