I had…read morea walk-in shower temperature mixing valve that was failing and I couldn't get the handle set screw removed to inspect it. This rounded out the Allen head socket and I informed the owner about this when I scheduled. First the good. The owner scheduled me directly for a few days out, availability was good. He kept the appointment on time and communicated that he was on his way. He is competent, experienced, and licensed with the State of Idaho. He fixed the problem by replacing the mixing cartridge but had to destroy the handle to remove it because of the set screw damage. The finish quality is good. The bad: he is not totally transparent about his pricing. When scheduling, I asked what his hourly rate was and he refused to disclose that, telling me that he prefers to work on a unit price basis and gave me an estimate of $325 for the job with a $175 call-out fee minimum. When he arrived, he determined that he would have to drill out the set screw and buy a new shower kit (head, finish nipple, faring, valve handle, and valve faring plate. At that point I should have asked him what he was going to charge for the extra work. When he was done with the job, he paused, contemplating what he was going to charge me and ended up doubling the price. He did not detail the cost of materials or time on the invoice so there is no way of knowing if he marked materials up or whether he was covering time until his next job. So, if you want a competent plumber but one who may take advantage of your situation and charge a price with a comfortable profit for him at no risk, then he is your man. I was probably overcharged (on a competitive basis) but the job was only a couple of hours so it was limited in any case.

JD was driving back from a job in Oregon and swung by our home, looked at the situation, retrieved his unclogger from his truck and within an hour he had our toilet functional. He took the extra time to be sure that the flush water flow was good by clearing out hard water mineral deposits on the bowl. I would call JD again without hesitation. She said they had committed to be there sometime between 8 and 11, but had told her they would try to be there at 8:00. This morning at about 7:45 AM Sherry received an email and a text message saying the technician was on his way, and both included the technician's photo. At precisely 8:00 AM, the truck pulled up to Sherry's house. I was greeted by a clean cut and professional young man named Chris, who introduced me to his trainee Colton. The first thing Chris asked is if I was OK with where he had parked his truck. Chris explained they would need access to Sherry's HVAC unit, the compressor, and the thermostat. They laid out a mat in front of the HVAC unit to catch any debris that may escape during cleaning, and when they came inside for me to show them the thermostat location, they put protective covers on their shoes. They presented me with an iPad for signatures authorizing the work they were performing, said the service would take from one to one and a half hours and that they didn't need me to stick around, and that they would leave a written report on Sherry's counter when they left. As I left, Colton was *wiping down* the inside access door of Sherry's HVAC. I'm a process guy, so when a company exhibits process perfection in their customer interaction I am confident that they will follow that process even if I'm not there to watch, and that everything else in the back of house is in order.
