I was in Simi Valley one late morning and decided to pick up lunch from Tico's. The Mexican restaurant is located in a small unpretentious and quiet strip mall, with a simple sign and a colorful interior decor and seating. There is a large menu that covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. I selected a to go order from one of their three combos. In my case, lunch combo #1. My original thought was the tamale option. When I asked if it was made fresh daily, the manager was honest and said they get it from outside frozen. It was the only such item. The rest she said, was all made in house. I complimented her on her honesty. So my choice was the shredded chicken enchilada, that also comes with rice and refried beans. A bag of chips two small salsa cups also accompanied the order. One, tomato based, not acidic and smooth. The second, a roasted tomatillo based salsa, that was the best for flavor, spices and kick. Unfortunately, at home, both of them ran out fast. The entree, and all of its components, the enchilada, rice, beans, were all good. There is more on their menu that needs to be tried. Service here was warm, inviting, friendly. And honest. So much so, it urges you to make a quick plan, to soon go back to this restaurant again. read more

Was in area on 1/16/26 at 11:30am, restaurant seemed empty When I went inside I noticed it to be outdated as the Hostess mentioned purchased from friend after friend And been same way since early days, yes I can tell no Updates since early 1970 looks like.. But , It looked clean . I noticed after my order of taco and bean and cheese burrito that the kitchen help did Not use Gloves.. When I arrived I also noticed about 4 taco shells being fried. Shells tasted like old oil it was fried in , yucks.. They had a metal container with the shredded taco meat in it which they toke the just fried taco shells and put in my hand with No Gloves. My taco had very little meat! The burrito was ok and sauce they gave blah. My total was 14.45 what a waste!! The hostesses was very nice all had smiles I just wish they used gloves , get a little light in kitchen area and dining area, As rather dark Will I return, don't think so sadly.. read more

Friendly people and great service. A clean and not too noisy interior make for a pleasant dining time. Their food so far has been quite good; try the chile rellenos, they are home made and very tasty. The chile colorado gets high marks as well, so do their crunchy tacos with the very tender shredded beef. Frankly, I've yet to encounter anything I did not like. We drove past this place for years and finally tried it a few weeks ago, talk about sorry we did not try this gem sooner, that's us. read more

I've been trying all of the hole in the wall Mexican places in simi to compare and I tried Ticos and got my usual hard taco and enchilada combo. The green enchilada sauce is a little spicy and I loved it. The hard shell taco was fine but it didn't see like it was fried on site. Overall a solid choice and great prices. This elderly lady took my order and then I realized she charged me $70 for four burritos so I went in and asked him what's up. They got upset even though they said yeah this is her fault but they got upset that I got upset and I'm like how many times has she done this to people without them realizing it anyway they didn't like that I got upset that you know having somebody trying to take my money and reverse my order but I wanted to leave anyway they suck. A Simi valley staple, for sure. Prices have definitely gone up (but who's hasn't?) Phone orders are ready quickly. One thing I don't really like is that they combine stuff in styrofoam containers- but they do label the outside so you'll know which is which. Just my personal preference. Hit and miss on the Mexican style burrito but the tacos are great. I'm deducting a star because there's no public restroom. I mean, what kind of restaurant can you be if you don't offer a restroom? My last review was the last time I was here. I gave it another shot, thinking it might have improved. I thought wrong. Still the smallest burrito, to top it off, they're charging more. Not sure how they're still in business. Burrito was bland, very little flavor. It was supposed to come with guacamole, I didn't see any in it. The salsa was good but I didn't pay over $11 for that. I wish I came here more often. Back when I was a teen, my father would always get me the beef enchilidas and beef tacos. They have the BEST beef that I've had around thid area,super flavourful and tender. Alot of other places make their beef all hard. Also the prices are very forgiving! I got an enchilida plate for only 11 bucks. Everything was so yummy. Also, their salsa!!! Its not spicy but has a slight kick but it's also very flavorful. The restaurant inside is okay, nothing over the top but feels very "mom & pop" shop. Servers/Cashiers were very nice and friendly I hope to try more things off the menu! Really wanted to like this local mom and pop shop. But the food was flavorless, the chips were stale and it was expensive. Plus, I was charged $40.67 for Rancheros Enchiladas (#3D which was 13.49), #13 ($12.49) and nachos supreme ($11.99). I can't make that add up to $40 (even with tax) for the life of me... If you were going to order the chicken posole for take out, just make double sure you check the order before leaving. Our order had 3 bite sized chicken pieces and the rest was broth and loaded with hominy!! Might as well call it hominy posole. That being said, the broth was amazingly tasty, rich and flavorful. It was bad enough, after getting home and hoping to dig into a nice chicken soup, only to find out it wasn't. When I called the restaurant, the lady who answered had the audacity to tell me that this was the first complaint they had received about the lack of chicken!! The pictures depicts the amount of hominy vs chicken. The rest of the space was occupied by the soup which had to be poured into another bowl just to show the ratio of soup to the hominy!! I Have been eating here for a good portion of my life and it has been consistently good with friendly service. I gave one star because I had to in order to write this post. First off we ordered 12 tacos with rice and beans and spent a good amount there. Once we got home we found out there was pretty much nothing in all the tacos and to top it off there was a hair in our food. I wanted to give this place another chance because it used to be one of my favorite spots to go, but over the past years this place has gone down hill.
