We ate here recently. It was not a new place for us, bu that been here only 1-2 times in many years. We enjoyed the chips and dip, although it certainly appeared they actually counted how many chips we were allowed. The ambiance is very good here the rooms are broken up so noise doesn't spread. We both had chimichan's. Hers was chicken and mine beef. I appreciated my food more than she did. As she started eating it, she noticed it looked more like a beef-filed one. She called the waitress over and showed her. The waitress agree it appeared the kitchen had made a mistake. A second one was ordered and came quickly. But as she was eating it once again the color and texture of the meat was not chicken, The manager finally came to the table. He left and went to the kitchen. Came back after 1-2 minutes later. He explained that it was indeed chicken, but the meat is a mixture of seasoned pork and chicken. My wife ate her food, but was upset because the name of the entree was 'chicken'. She didn't enjoy it because she could taste the difference firstly but mostly because it was NOT what she wanted and it turned out ALL their chicken and beef are mixtures. My beef one it turned out was also a mixture. Why they did it we don't know. As we let her comment to me was "I will never eat here again. Make sure when you write this up that you let others who might read it know what they are getting. . I am now doing it. Our family LOVES Tico's! It's been in Lincoln forever and hasn't changed one bit. The restaurant is so authentic and the food is mouth watering. Portions are huge and budget friendly. I'm pretty bitchy. My husband and I went to Tico's recently because my sweet cousin invited a big group of her friends and family there on the evening prior to her wedding. It was a Friday. There were a lot of people there. I can imagine this may have been a little discouraging for the server because our entire party didn't arrive at the same time. However, we did arrive within 20 minutes of each other. There were 16 total, including like, 5 or 6 kids, who all chose to sit at a booth across the room, YAY! :P I had a pinot gris which was especially good considering it was a house wine. I was caught by surprise. My husband had a beer and then one of their signature margaritas, which was exceptional. For food, I had the chile rellenos. I get cranky with these because they're breaded and there's nothing worse than soggy breading. It just wasn't. The breading wasn't crunchy, but it wasn't soggy. The peppers were mild, so probably a Poblano, & very tasty. The beans & rice weren't exceptional but to my knowledge beans & rice aren't traditionally served with chile rellenos in a Mexican dish. I like having beans & rice because honestly the leftovers make for a super satisfying breakfast. These were no different. There's lots of things to be said about the service industry today, but at Tico's on Friday, our server HUSTLED. She did a really nice job and kept her smile on. I don't feel like servers should have to hustle to get their jobs done, and actually when they do, it makes me uncomfortable. When I see servers who are clearly tired or hot, I feel like I would rather slip them a secret cash tip rather than tip on the card. I'm really sorry I didn't catch her name. My complaints are only that they tried to seat 16 people at two tables which only had enough room for 12, and it was noisy. Full disclosure, noise is a regular problem for me because I'm hearing impaired and too much noise makes it difficult for my hearing aids to filter out the background in order to hear conversations. I'd be glad to go back to this Tico's the next time I visit my cousins. read more

Such a neat place! I can't believe I'd never been to Tico's before last night. I've passed the building many times over the years. It's really impressive on the interior. We had friendly service and strong drinks. The spicy margarita was very spicy with intense flavor. If I went back I'd try the gold margarita. My date got a beer/Rita which was fun. The food was alright. Standard Tex-Mex. Their seasoned chips and fresh salsa were good. My favorite was the dessert. That fried ice cream was amazing! Tico's is a Lincoln classic that has been around since the 70s. I don't know if they are as authentic as some other places I've tried in town, but there are a few items I really enjoy, like the grilled chicken cream cheese enchiladas and chile rellenos.Chips are visibly homemade and seasoned with tajin or something. I enjoy the original salsa they are served with, but since we are spice freaks, we always get the hotter one too. It is really thick but has a good kicky aftertaste. Prices are pretty reasonable and service has generally been good here. I love the asthetic inside, they are keeping it retro. I went Ticos I'm Lincoln, Ne recently because I've been going there for the last 40 years or so and it had always been great food. However, the last time I ordered my usual Chile Rellanos(?) it was a different story. I took my order home and ate two of the six and noticed right away that they didn't taste right, but just thought maybe they changed the recipe or something. I felt a little quezy but didn't think too much of it tho. I froze the rest in individual portions like I always do. Each time i reheated a portion I got quezy off of it. I didnt Call Ticos back right away because I didn't want to be "that guy." But I spent $25, and pathetically that's a lot of money to me! When I called they said there was nothing they could do, which is really what I expected. I no they're not gonna miss my business, as I can only go once a year or so. Lunch for $8?, you can have it at Tico's. I had the soup and salad. The split pea soup was delicious and came in a generous sized bowl. The salad was crisp and fresh. Margarita was great! Food was bad. Got a chicken chimichanga. Would have expected the chicken to be shredded but it was cubed. Chimichanga was crispy which was the only positive, it lacked flavor and didn't have much interior at all. Service was slow. Sat for over 20 minutes before we got chips or were able to order drinks. Rice and beans were also underwhelming. There wasn't anything worthy of another visit. I would not recommend. I can't forget about the guacamole. Who doesn't love some fresh smashed guac? A fantastic restaurant! My family I went in, for Fathers Day, and it was extremely busy. Our waiter was kind. When our food was delivered to us, 2/3 didn't have our orders correctly. I asked for mine with no tomato and my fathers for the sauce on the side. The waitress apologized and took our plates back. The cooks fixed our plates within 10 minutes. Stole money and won't make it right. I ordered online and went to pickup. They double charged my card and even after showing the GM the 2 charges on my account she says "I hope that just works itself out". Now it's almost a week and SHOCKER it didn't just work it self out . Why do I continually try Tico's? I'll tell you why. It is because my husband loves it. I don't even think that he can exactly explain it, but he does. The drinks contain zero alcohol. The rice tastes like my grandpa's basement. And by that, I'm not sure if I mean the old dilapidated insulation or just mustiness. Every single time that we come here, we have slow or just straight up weird servers. The chips have a special seasoning on them that is slightly spicy. It's good. The salsa is fresh and it is good. The chicken that they use in their dishes is good.Besides that, I kick myself every single time I walk in this place and leave spending over $50 on something I could make myself (sans weird tasting rice). The decor is weird and retro and reminds me of how Ozzy Osbourne may decorate a Mexican restaurant in 1978. I do like that. It is fun! If you are at Tico's believer, that is great. Continue going there forever. But if you try it once and don't even like it, don't continue to go back like I do. Or might I just recommend that you never go? Or I suggest getting takeout to bypass slow weird service and kiddie cocktails. read more

And too neat that a few of the faces there today were there when it opened. After reading previous ratings, I arrived here with low expectations. I left impressed. Much has been said about the chips and salsa. I found neither bland. Both were fresh. Our waitress almost immediately offered a spicier/hotter salsa. We accepted as soon as she said it. Both were good. The chips were unevenly seasoned, but hardly worth complaining about. Our meals came out fresh and hot. I ordered a taco and a tamale. The taco was a taco. The tamale was about as good as I've ever had. There was no need to wrap it in cornstalk (as some places do) which only causes me more work. The filling was just right. My dining partner had a pork burrito (can't find it on the online menu). He described it as "steaming hot and delicious". We thought the portions were very appropriate. The items were appropriately priced. Our waitress reflected other comments that sour cream is an issue, just ask for it on the side. The margaritas were disappointing, however. Quite ordinary. Overall, I can see going back even though it's not a traditional over-the-top Mexican restaurant. I can see why locals who grew up with this keep going back. I can also see why newcomers like me won't be overly thrilled with it. Certainly, there are better restaurants. There are worse too. By far better than the boil-in-a-bag chain restaurants. read more

I had ordered an appetizer, deli Rosa dip that was very dry for a dip for corn chips. I just figured that I didn't like it; expensive mistake. Then I received my order of two relleno con pollos. When I cut onto one of them, oil squirted all over my shirt. Oil proceeded to flood the plate from the item. I took one bite and was sickened by the oil quantity. It smelled good, or I would have been disgusted enough. I pushed the plate aside. When the waiter came and took the plate, I explained the issue and he took it to show the cook. It was our happy hour go to place in college, several detours later I was back in Lincoln for a football game and couldn't believe it was still there. Celebrating my daughters birthday she wanted to go to Ticos. There is something about the atmosphere at Ticos that makes one nostalgic. However the memories made today were not good ones. The waitress was excellent, salad okay. Margaritas tasted like overly sweetened koolaid. We informed the waitress who told the manager of our concern the manager said we could order additional tequila shots if we weren't satisfied. We did and with the additional $4.00 worth of tequila we had margaritas. Entrees were mediocre. Cheese used appeared to be Kraft single slices. All wrong for rellenos and really wrong for the cream cheese chicken enchilada. From salad to entrees there was a delay in getting our food. The waitress kept apologizing and did in the end get the manager to take 5% ($3.00) off our bill. Nice try but I won't be back read more

Honestly, I should have known it would be dog shit when I walked in and there was civil war veterans and woman's suffrage advocates at every table. Old people do not have taste buds. First of all, I will mention the good things about this meal. - 1. My server was excellent. Very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. - 2. My soft drink was great. - 3. The cheese dip was pretty good. Now for the bad. - 1. The menu said "beef taco" so I was expecting something that tasted at least something like beef. This tasted like the cooks opened up a can of Worthington Vegetarian Burger fake meat and put a couple of spoonfuls of it (without any seasonings) into a taco shell and then slightly warmed it up. (And if you don't know what Worthington Vegetarian Burger is, go over to the ABC next to Union College in the eastern part of town.) - 2. The menu said "chile relleno" so I was expecting a chile relleno. The correct way to make one is to take a good sized fresh green chile pepper (either a poblano or a Hatch/Anaheim is acceptable), roast and peel it, then remove the seeds and replace them by stuffing the chile with cheese or/and meat (and vegetables are even good in there--I had those twice in Texas), and then dip it in an egg batter and fry it. If the egg batter is too complicated, then make an omelet and fold it over the stuffed chile (this is how they're usually done where I lived in Arizona). Attention restaurant owner/manager: That's what a chile relleno is--a stuffed chile pepper. The garbage brought to my table was nothing even remotely like that. What they brought me was something that closely resembled a small, children's sized chimichanga with some cheese and a piece of a green chile pepper rolled up inside it. And while it looked a little like it might have been a small flour tortilla that it was rolled in and fried, the taste and texture were much closer to a large egg roll wrapper. That is NOT a chile relleno. - 3. The salsa that came with the chips was not very good. Actually kind of weird. - 4. The prices were ridiculous. For the quality of food I received, this food would still have been expensive at half the price they charged. For a create your own combo, those two items I just mentioned (along with a smaller than normal amount of rice and beans for a side) was $15. Yes, you read that right. Fifteen dollars!! I've had much better food at Taco Bell--which is not even close to being Mexican food. The next time I'm in Lincoln, the only way to get me to even consider returning to this restaurant would be to read "New management/owner, new cooks, new recipes, fresh and real ingredients, and more reasonable prices" in the description. read more

Full disclosure that I'm writing this review based on one dish, which maybe it's my fault, I took to go: chile relleno. This is a classic dish that you cannot go wrong on - nay you are not allowed to go wrong on - because the recipe is in the name. Chile relleno literally means 'stuffed chile'. What they gave me was the opposite. It was a weird microwaved yellow processed cheese looking block ... on top of the rice and beans. And inside the sweaty cheese block were two little strips of green chile. The inverse of what the dish should be! I was so annoyed when I got home and had to eat those two little strips of green chile and throw out the rest of that gross cheese. read more
