I decided to check this place out because they there's a groupon running lately and I had heard some awesome things about it, plus I was craving a burger and it's always nice to get them for cheap. I pulled up their menu and loved it even more, when they name everything after classic rock bands, they list each and every thing that can go on it, and they support local with their meat and produce. What more could I ask for? I called ahead to place a carry out order on a Sunday afternoon about 7 pm, getting two Bread Zeppelins (their basic burger with LMTO, Ketchup, and mayo) with no mayo, and a side of mac and cheese. The gentleman taking the order read it back to me, answered the questions that i had (cook on the burgers are all medium he said), and gave me an estimate of about 30 minutes. I showed up after 25, and ended up waiting for about 10 before the food was done, but that's not a big deal - they were absolutely slammed and he was the only person working the front. Taking orders, answering phone calls, and making milk shakes all on his lonesome, with the occasional delivery of food from the kitchen. The restaurant had a cool look, tables sitting around, fun graffiti style writing and paintings on the wall that reference back to the classic rock theme of the spot. My two burgers were take out, so when they brought them out in brown paper bags (one for each) I went straight on home to unwrap and grub.
Getting the burgers home I was surprised, each bag also had a serving of coleslaw (completely unmentioned on the website, menu, and most reviews), bonus food is like my second favorite type of food so I'm already even more excited... Unwrapping the burger I would be lying if I didn't say I got a serious Wendy's vibe. That may sound like an insult, but I love Wendy's. I don't eat it a lot, but if you want me to eat a Wendy's burger from a takeout spot it better have hit the weight room. And you better believe Tickle Pickle has a good training regimen. The burger was thin and square, had crispy edges, a soft bun, and partially melted american cheese, topped with a few thin pieces of iceberg, some chunks of red onion, and a soft slice of tomato. On the bottom we had a splatter of ketchup on a pair of fresh dill pickles (and I know these were dill pickles because I could literally see the spices on them). Regrettably the burgers were too thin to really be a true "medium" on the cook, they were pretty hammered, but that flat top left such a crisp I wasn't mad about that. It tasted like that big boy Wendy's burger. It was classic and smooth, you would never confuse this for "gourmet" and you wouldn't brag about it to anyone. But you just want a really solid throwback style burger? This is it.
Another visit we tried the Rob Zomwich and Red Hot Chili Peppers burgers, both switched onto a pretzel bun, split them down the middle and tried each. They're very similar burgers, just with different types of cheese and some hot sauce instead of banana peppers. I'll be honest, the Rob Zommwich wasn't really spicy at all. It had flavor, there was a bit of heat, but I never felt like there was SPICE. The Red Hot? Somehow managed to hit me in the face! I was a little surprised by it, there was such a small difference between the two sandwiches, but it was huge in the impact of what I was actually eating. Definitely go with that if you really want the heat, the pepper jack cheese has to be the factor. If you just want a hint with the same classic hamburger style, stick with my buddy rob.
How about the coleslaw and mac and cheese? COleslaw was definitely vinegar based with some heat to it, spices and pepper that soaked right into the cabbage. It would have been nice as a topper on my burger, but I didn't even think to try that until I'd wolfed down half of my sandwich already. The mac and cheese? Tasted homemade, it was bowtie pasta with a seriously thick amount of cheese, real cheese, not velveeta or grease heavy fake powder, there was cheddar and colby at the least. It also had some black pepper in it, not the red flake that was in the slaw, but large black flakes. It was what you want with homemade mac and cheese. A little heavy, a little too indulgent, a lot delicious. Dig in, enjoy that classic burger, enjoy that spicy coleslaw, worry about the calories later. read more
