I went to hike Blue Lake in Boulder earlier this week and my good friend was in the mood to try some good ol' Tibetan food. I was in the mood for a new cuisine so I thought why not!? The diner itself is kind of a "hole-in-the-wall" spot next to a Subway. It is not a restaurant, by no means. I've had good experiences with "hole-in-the-wall" food joints, so it's appearance did not stray me away from trying the food. The employees (all Tibetan folks) were so kind and patient. I was very happy with their menu selection. So much to choose from! I ordered the "Vegetarian Momo" which is basically a traditional Tibetan dumpling dish. It was stuffed with an array of veggies and came with mouth-watering spicy sauce. The man who took our order offered my friend and I a cup of chai (tea) (which apparently comes on the house with every meal) while we waited for our meal to be ready. The chai was much too sweet for my taste. But as a South Asian myself, I know how sweet them brown folks like their food/drinks. The dumplings were delicious and very satisfying (8 dumplings/per order for about $8). I asked for some extra hot sauce because it was so. damn. good. I would definitely go back to Tibet Kitchen when I am back in Boulder. The only reason I would give this place a 4/5 stars is because of the lack of upkeep of the restaurant. If they would spend a bitttt more time cleaning up the place, I am sure it would attract many many more people. For the food and the service, I would give 5 stars, no doubt. I had high hopes for this place based on other reviews. The $6.95 dinner was true, but the lots of food piled up was just a lot of rice. We wanted one beef and one chicken curry. They didn't have any beef curry so we ended up with both getting chicken. The chicken pieces were very dry, just a few of them, but at least the curry sauce was pretty good. The Good: Cute, tiny, tasty Tibetan spot with authentic decor, vibe & food. Menu is clear, there's vegetarian options and vegetarian specials right along with beef, pork & chicken. Cup of free hot real chai when you order, a warm & welcoming touch. The Bad: Cold in winter, very limited seating & parking. The Food: Inconsistent - can range from okay to amazing. Takes a long time which I like because it means they're making it to order (but not great when you're in a hurry).Dumplings are the way to go. Good veggie options (more than one!) The Service: Order at the counter, they're nice when you try to pronounce the Tibetan food names. Bus your own table, self-serve water. This place is a little bit of a hole in the wall on a busy street corner in Boulder. It was a hot day and there is no air-conditioning. I got some Momos to go they didn't have the veggie ones that day but the chicken ones are pretty good would love to try the veggie ones. I love Tibet Kitchen. This is as Tibetan as it gets in Boulder, CO! The momo's are delicious and are filled with juice. I really do enjoy the hot sauce that comes with it, it is fairly hot but does not take away from the taste of the momo. I think this is also a great lunch spot, it is super cheap and you can get a full meal for 6 bucks. The restaurant is small and quaint, it is designed with authentic Tibetan decor, which gives it a cozy feel. read more

We had the beef momo, chili chicken, and sliced beef with bread and rice. Unlike a lot of places, you could tell they made everything fresh from scratch. The momo sauce was fantastic, and the beef and chicken were delicious. Might be spicy for some people's tastes, but if you avoid eating the peppers, it was a perfect amount of heat. Also very generous portion sizes considering the reasonable prices - we had easily enough food for 4 people for less than $30. read more

My favorite food to get is the chicken and beef momo's. The prices here are good and the quality of the food is amazing! There is limited seating on the inside, but in warm weather, you can sit outside on the patio area. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is clean. I would make it my personal goal to free Tibet if I could eat at this place every day. I had driven past this inconspicuous corner restaurant many, many times but only decided to stop in when I saw their and announcing lunch specials starting at $4.95 in the paper. What a deal! You can either choose one entree and a side for $4.95, 2 entrees and a side for $5.95 or 3 entrees and a side for $6.95. I almost gleefully leaped for joy like a little kid at Christmas when I beheld the variety of vegan/vegetarian options available to choose from and the huge selection of sides which included brown rice, but then I remembered I was in public and restrained myself because I am an adult. Don't worry all you carnivores, there are meat options for you too. They also give everyone a free little mug of homemade chai, which even I took a sip of even though I am generally dairy free and it was really tasty. The worker there was really friendly too- we told him it was our first time and he explained everything to us and we had a nice little conversation too. read more

Tibet Kitchen is one of those spots that's very Boulder without being very "Boulder". Does that make sense? It has that hippie/bohemian/free sprit/Flying Mystics/Zen Buddhist/bodhisattva/shah bra/peace on Earth air to it and it's totally cool, man, because this spot is genuinely that way. It's not some brand new, eco-modern storefront selling an image of foreign charm. This joint serves bonafide Tibetan cuisine in a casual and very friendly atmosphere with bizarre art on the walls and vases and figurines on every windowsill. It's a small spot, unfortunately, wedged next to a Subway. The parking situation in the front is also small and usually crowded so make sure not to drive up in your Hummer H2. Do people even still drive those things? On second thought, if you drive a Hummer H2, just got ahead and park it off a cliff. The interior of the restaurant is very small with an order counter and some counters and stools in the front for dining in. There's another small room in the back with 4 tables and it looked like there was a pretty rad patio outside. You order your food at the front counter where there are plenty of menus to peruse. The guy we ordered from was really nice and very helpful. He even offered us some hot chai. While we were there during lunch happy fun special time, we ordered off of the dinner menu because the lunch options are served cafeteria/buffet style which is never a good choice anywhere...not even Vegas...especially not Vegas! The menu has a lot of options for vegetarians. Even vegetarian momos! I ordered those and tsel shogok (spinach & potatoes). The momos were incredible! Steaming hot and served with a side of spicy, ass-kicking pepper sauce. The dude ordered beef phing sha (meat cooked with black mushrooms, scallions and bean thread noodles), but he was served chicken instead of beef--he didn't care because it was delicious! My entrée was awesome as well. All of the food was rich, flavorful and very fresh. The cups and plates were all basic and made out of metal. That kleptomaniac, 75-year-old grandmother that lives deep inside of me wanted to steal the cups, but don't worry, I beat her into submission. If you can't make it to Lhasa and you want some authentic Tibetan food, then make your way to Tibet Kitchen. Actually, I think the Dalai Lama even tweeted about this place... Wow! They make their momo's to order here. Keep in mind that it will take 15 minutes before it gets to you. I didn't mind the wait. I popped in here having no clue as to what to order. Their lunch buffet was a fantastic deal at about $5 a plate but i wanted to try what they were famous for which is the Momo's. College kids were popping in and out filling their belly's with the lunch buffet. Nobody came as a group this seemed to be the place where people came to dine alone. Grab a quick bite and your out. I had time to kill. 15minutes to wait for my momo's made from scratch. The owner gave me some complimentary chai. Super smooth and delicious. He chatted me up. We talked about Los Angeles where he had first lived and worked when he arrived in the USA. We talked about Boulder where he now lives and loves. I learned about Boulder's buddhist community from him and as a realtor in his spare time I learned about the housing market in Boulder too in case I decided to relocate. Super cool guy and totally Tibetan. My Momo's were worth the wait. Freshly made dumplings that were hot and steaming. I had the sampler and I would have to say that my favorite was the chicken. The dipping sauce is a bit spicy but really enhance the flavors of the momo's. I do agree with the other reviewer that the dumplings could have been bolder in flavor but the dipping sauce really helps. If I moved to Boulder I would be coming here often. If not for the Momo's then definitely their Chai and friendly conversation. read more

For freshly made and flavorful cheap lunch that wakes up my palate and gives me a zing of energy for the rest of my work day, Tibet Kitchen is the best. Although I'm in no position to speak on the subject of authenticity, I can say that the Tibetan Buddhist teachers at nearby Naropa University, as well as visiting monks and nuns and all manner of Naropa students frequent the restaurant. A certain Lama from Naropa has told me that the momos (dumplings) at Tibet Kitchen are the best. Comparing to Sherpa's, or Tibet's Kitchen (in Louisville), I have to agree. The momos are freshly made, right there in the restaurant. You'll have to wait 15 minutes for them because they're made right when you order them! You can stand at the counter and watch, if you like. Their vegetarian momos vary in content depending on what vegetables are in season (more carrot and cabbage in the winter, more green vegetables in the summer), and the beef and chicken momos are always excellent. Momos are served with a small side of cabbage salad and a dollop of their homemade hot sauce. I don't know for sure what's in it, but it's the only hot sauce that I've had that produces three distinctly different and potent burns, and yet also feels balanced, consistent and smooth yet textured. It lingers nicely, and cools gently with a few sips of water. I wish they'd bottle and sell it (I've asked). Lunch options at Tibet Kitchen are excellent: for less than $6 you get two kinds of dishes with fried rice or brown rice or noodles. The dishes are often meat-based, but there are always at least 2 vegetarian options. All dishes often have a variety of vegetables. Nothing seems greasy or oily or overcooked, which is something I often find at other similarly priced Asian-ish lunch counter operations. Really, it's the best food I've had at a restaurant in Boulder for around $5-7 per person. And the people that work there are all very genuinely friendly. As a tourist in Boulder, it's great to find an eatery that makes you feel welcome! It's a small little eatery that's worth trying if you're looking for something different. The food is great! I was so happy when my companion agreed to my suggestion and wanted to give Tibetan food a try. I love adventurous souls! We were hungry! I ordered the 2 entree plate with Tsel Shogok--Sliced Potatoes and Spinach and Beef with Peppers (hot, not just green) and Fried Rice. She also ordered the 2 entree plate but with sel Shamu--Sauteed fresh white mushroom sautéed with onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, broccoli, zucchini and red pepper and Jhasa Shamdeh--Chicken curry marinated in home-made yogurt and potato. We split an order of Vegetarian Momo (dumplings). We sat outside beside the alter of irons, (literally, it's a alter made of iron-your-clothes irons. And then there are the rock climbing Barbies. Chicken momos are really good. Just warn your companions of the next hour because when you burp after you eat these, you will definitely be reminded again of their deliciousness. Ask my friends riding back in the car with me. I thought I got away with burping (I couldn't blow it out the window because there were none in the backseat of this car), but when they both had to roll down their windows to get the stinkiness out, I had been caught with dumpling breath! The food could be spicier and I'd still go to Sherpa's if I had to pick a restaurant in Boulder for Tibetan/Nepalese cuisine. However, for a lunch spot a couple blocks from my work, this place is great. I've only tried a few items off the lunch combo menu, but all have been delicious. I'm told that the hand-made Tibetan dumplings (mo-mos) are amazing, but the server suggested calling in ahead as they take a while to make. The food is delicious but the price is the real selling point. A two entree lunch special is $5.95 and comes with a hot (homemade?) chai tea if you eat there. The guy behind the counter piles on scoop after scoop of whatever entree you choose until your entire plate or to-go box is heaping with food. The fried noodles are my favorite side--I found the fried rice a little bland. Having said that, the sauces from the entrees spill over into the rice and make it much more palatable. The momo's are delicious and very filling. A single order of momo's was enough for a dinner for me. The veggie momo is probably the weakest entry in the momo varieties as they don't have as much seasoning or spices as the meat momo's. Be warned, they take about 15 minutes to make, so ordering ahead is a good idea if you momo to go-go (sorry). I will say some of the dishes are a bit hit and miss, with the flavors on some being a bit too subtle, bordering on bland. I've found a few I like (chickpeas, potatoes), and I've stuck to them. If the entrees were a bit spicier or more adventurous with the flavors this place would be a no-brainer 5 stars. As for the parking-- it can definitely be an issue. I've been lucky for the most part, but it can definitely turn into a problem if you're planning on eating there and not just picking up food. You would be better off though by calling in advance and ordering your takeout. They do have a small room at the back if you want to sit and eat and some high seats out front too. Everything was super bland and all tasted the same...MSG anyone? I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because they did have some more authentic looking items on the menu, that were probably a better choice than the lunch special. My boyfriend and I always saw it when we pass by but never went there. I'm glad we did. We got momo and this hand pull pasta soup. We are all about flavors and the momo has it. They served it with a chili sauce. Sauce or no sauce it's good. The staff was very friendly and while he's talking you will be sipping on their homemade chai. It was delicious.
