    Dining room

Sunday, July 5th. In this already catatonic town --which saw better days during the coal boom --my options for lunch were bleak. Maybe a sandwich at a gas station? Yelp suggested three places along Independence Street, with a handful of ratings each. The Dining Room was the closest. With a name this original, how fun could the food be? I was wrong! I ordered a berry berry tea, and my server suggested the chicken and waffles. Huge portion! The waffles had a nice fluffy pancake-like texture. Neither the gravy nor the syrup were worth the calories. I sat outside and enjoyed a rotation of shirtless men, couples cursing as they walked, and outdated hip hop blaring from trucks, vans, sedans, and even pedestrians' cell phones. Next time I'm in Shamokin, I have to look into its music culture, and Old Forge style pizza.

The decor is nice and the staff was on top of refilling drinks, taking the table order, and cleaning off tables. The pierogy and halushki was really good. My brother liked his jasmine bowl/chicken teriyaki but said it could've been a bit larger. My mom liked the chef salad. It took a little while to get the food so be patient or order an appetizer. I'll definitely come back when I'm in town.

Really nice lunch, took my family here and was really happy with he service our meals. A cool throw back vibe. My grandfather had a burger that looked great and came with fresh cut fries. But I couldn't resist ordering the polish picnic, a sampler dish I have never seen on a menu before anywhere. It was huge lunch serving and all the home cooked specialties on the plate were delicious and went together well.

I came here for lunch with my grandmother on a Wednesday afternoon & had a lovely time. The decor is vintage mod with a modern twist & cardboard celebrity cutouts line the walls. The different light fixtures above the tables are gorgeous! My favorite table is the beautiful yellow 1950's-60's table for 4 which I call the Audrey Hepburn Table since her picture is framed behind it. The menu has a lot to offer & breakfast is served all day. There are quite a few salads, sandwiches, subs, paninis, & dinner entrees including a favorite of mine known as chicken and waffles. We both started off with the soup of the day: tomato basil bisque & it was very good & fresh. Next, I had the 6" steak & cheese sandwich garden style. It was seasoned well & the veggies were very fresh, ripe & full of color. My Grandmother had the pesto chicken panini & a side of fries. The sandwich came with a pickle on top, was full of flavorful white meat chicken, pesto and melted cheese with two very ripe tomatoes. Overall, a nice place to eat! Very reasonable prices & very clean. Tables were bussed very promptly & service was great! We will be back! :)

We went a few Sundays in the late spring and had a good experience. When Knoebel's opened, the experience went downhill. We drew the line when we went in on a Sunday where large groups were present, and they apparently had no clue on buffet etiquette, or just didn't care. Cleanliness and food safety are huge to me after I got horrible food poisoning at another buffet in the area and spent 4 days in the ICU with it. While the buffet area itself was clean and the food was to temperature, there were many patrons taking dirty plates back up. We notified our server who just looked at us and kind-of shrugged and walked away. My husband approached one of them and said, "Please don't keep taking dirty plates back up to the buffet.". One of them chastised him and told him he was "nuts" and that he was lying that it's not OK to do that. Plates are not at the buffet - the server brings them, and will bring two sets at the beginning, and then will replenish when needed. When we left, we informed another server that it was gross to do that and they're opening themselves up for issues if the health department stopped by, she asked why we didn't say anything. We said that we did but the server didn't seem to care. She yelled "I care!" from behind a door, but that was enough for us to opt to not return until Knoebel's was closed for the year. We suggested that they consider keeping the plates at the buffet area to discourage that. We decided to try again recently. Not only was there a large group there taking their dirty plates back up, but they were also taking dirty utensils up and using them. I was 3/4 through my plate when I saw that and refused to eat any more. My husband again said something to them, and they just pretended as if he didn't hear. We again said something to the server and suggested that they need to put signs up saying to not take dirty plates back up, or again to put plates at the buffet, but I'm fairly confident nothing will be done. There are other reviews out there that bring up questions of cleanliness, which is concerning. Unsure whether we'll try to return or not. At 10 am, much of the hot side of the buffet was empty, and not restocked while we were there, which is another strike.

It was worth it to get off the beaten path (for a very little bit, in the scheme of things) to eat here. We were disappointed we'd already had too much coffee for the day because it all looked so good. The service was a little blah but I'm okay with that, as long as the food is good. Took a while to make our sandwiches, but it was a bit early in the day (11:15 a.m.) and it gave us time to use the (clean) restrooms and look around the cute little place. I had the chicken Caesar wrap - HUGE amount of greens and some chicken (maybe not enough for some) and - get this - croutons(!!) in there, all with a great-tasting but not overly done dressing. It was so big it was shareable. But I managed to eat the whole thing. Couldn't have done any better on that wrap!! It came with chips and a really good pickle spear too! My hubby had the EBLT. SO huge. Not the easiest to eat while driving haha but an amazing sauce on there that just MADE the sandwich so much better than a boring BLT, even with an egg on it. Sure wish we had this little gem closer to us! Great little downtown vibe and quaint area. Next time, we won't skip the coffee, no matter how much we've had already!

I have been coming to this place for a long time and, until today, had no complaints…read more Today I brought in a coffee from the coffee shop down the street, thinking nothing of it. In fact, I thought that a place called "The Kind Cafe" might appreciate someone supporting another local business. Instead, I was told to cover up my coffee with a sleeve. It struck me as a very odd request, but I complied anyway. After that, the experience became increasingly uncomfortable. I overheard the barista making comments to other customers such as, "Thanks for choosing our place for your drink order." Given the context, it felt very clearly directed at me. The comment was made publicly, in front of other customers, and came across as an attempt to shame me for bringing in a coffee from somewhere else. Then he asked me what kind of drink I had gotten. After I answered, he responded, "Oh, I thought it was something special," with a tone that felt sarcastic and dismissive. At that point, I asked him directly whether I had offended him by bringing in a coffee from another business. He told me that outside drinks were not allowed but delivered the message with an attitude that felt unnecessarily hostile. I explained that I had never been informed of this policy and genuinely did not know. I also told him that I felt he was trying to make me feel bad about it. His response was essentially, "I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, but whatever." The policy itself is not the issue. Had someone politely informed me that outside drinks were not allowed, I would have respected that immediately. What bothered me was being publicly embarrassed and treated with passive-aggressive disrespect over what was clearly an innocent mistake. I've been a regular customer for years and order from this place nearly every week. This was the first time I had ever brought in a coffee from somewhere else. Being treated this way by both the owner and the main barista was disappointing and completely at odds with the values this business claims to represent. For a place that calls itself "The Kind Cafe," this was one of the least kind customer interactions I've experienced in a long time. Perhaps this is an opportunity for some reflection on what kindness actually feels like from the customer's side of the counter.
