Jason said it's because of my affiliation with checkered past mma . Meanwhile, my friends Mike De La Cruz and Carter--who also have trained at checked past mma--were accepted without a problem. The inconsistency doesn't make sense and felt unprofessional. If there are policies in place, they should be applied fairly and clearly communicated. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression.

The coaches and staff here are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The stereotypes of "not being strong enough," or "im scared that ill get injured" are totally non-existent here. Everyone helps everyone learn and grow, which ultimately makes the gym in its entirety shine. This place isn't like any other culty BJJ gym, and they don't try to kill you your first time in (trust me, I've heard horror stories of other gyms putting new members through a workshop). Furthermore, they just transferred to a newer, bigger spot and have a wicked awesome setup! Plenty of space, new equipment, and they even offer strength and conditioning as well as kickboxing classes to spice it up! Membership rates are more than fair for what you get! They both really like that they are being taught real-life defensive skills as well as the martial "art," and I can see marked growth in their self confidence and assertiveness. The older daughter comes as often as she can. The younger, homebody daughter rarely leaves the house enthusiastically for anything, but is always in a good mood by the end of class. They both tried classes at another martial arts facility in town, but felt that this one was more welcoming and supportive.

There are only a handful of Poekoelan schools in the entire country, and Corvallis is incredibly lucky to have one. Geoff Wathen, the founder of Golden Naga and the main instructor, has put a ton of personal TLC into the development of the school, and it shows, in the quality of the instruction and the dedication of the students.
