These gentlemen are some of the best instructors you could ever hope to get. There are levels in fighting, and there are levels in coaching both of these guys are top-notch. I'm travelling up north to Seattle and doing a roadtrip, and made it my goal to drop in on as many gyms as possible throughout my journey. Coach Ben is very technical and we went over modern jiu jitsu technique. He went around helping address and troubleshoot everyone's drilling. Performance Martial Arts Academy is an awesome facility!!! The coaches and staff are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. They have a great kids program. I recommend them for people of all ages and abilities. My son and I have Muscular Dystrophy and this is a life-changing method of alternative physical therapy for us. The coaches are able to adapt and tailor techniques according to our specific abilities and range of mobility. The environment around the gym is very warm and welcoming. I've studied various martial arts for over 15 years and I've had the honor to train at multiple academies. Each has something unique to offer and no one school will be the best for all students. What I think makes Performance Martial Arts Academy unique is: 1) Focus on the Fundamentals - sometimes a whole class will be dedicated to a single move and the 20% of the details that make 80% of the difference. I remember coming over from another school and I couldn't believe how challenging the PMA white belts were for me. They didn't know a lot of moves, but the moves they did know they knew very well. 2) Great Role Models - Head Coach Ben Baxter is what all black belts should be: humble, open minded, and someone who cares deeply about his students' success. At a recent competition he decisively submitted a black belt from a much larger school. When others asked him how he did he simply replied "it went good" and smiled (many had to clarify to see if he even won). Ben routinely trains and teaches at other academies and has an open door policy for students and instructors from other gyms to train with him. In a culture where these people can be labeled "traitors" Ben's attitude is a breath of fresh air. 3) Sense of Belonging - there is a real kinship at Performance Martial Arts Academy. Everyone seems like friends, not just training partners. I can't describe why - I just know that this school has it and some of the gyms I trained at don't. It's probably because the school is a good match for me, which may not be true for everyone. Other schools in the area have more students than Performance Martial Arts Academy. This has some advantages as you can easily find training partners that are the same size and the same or higher skill level than yourself. However, sometimes it can be hard to feel like you belong as you're always seeing new faces and it's hard to remember everyone's names. There is also a greater variety in instruction and techniques at larger gyms and while this diversity can be good I found it challenging to put together into a cohesive style (especially when I was starting out). As mentioned ultimately it's up to the student to find the right gym for himself or herself. I highly encourage anyone to give more than one school an extended trial. Remember that martial arts is a long term (multiple years) investment so don't just pick the first place you try. Try to take classes for at least 2 weeks (4 classes) if not longer to get a real feel of the place. If you feel someone is pressuring you to sign up right on the spot or lock you into an extended contract ask yourself why they might be doing that and why they wouldn't want you to check other places out. While Performance Martial Arts Academy might not be the perfect school for you it should definitely be on your list of places to try. read more

Performance Martial Arts Academy is such an awesome place to train. The instructors are absolutely world class at what they do and to top it off they're just good, positive people who always treat you with respect. I've been training there for almost 2 years and I've never once had a bad experience with anyone there. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and I really do feel they are a part of my extended family. I can't even describe how much my health and my life has improved since I started training there. Also, their kids program is awesome, I have both of my 7 year old daughters training there and they absolutely love it. The guys here are my second family for sure. Everyone is welcoming and there are enough people to get a good variety of training partners. This is def a Brazilian JIU JITSU first school, but there are awesome classes for striking, judo, wrestling, and conditioning. Head coaches are all blackbelts in their art and very hands-on with students. read more

My sons train here. My oldest is 14 and trains in boxing and jiu-jitsu, and my 11 yo trains in one of the youth jiu-jitsu classes. The atmosphere is so inviting and welcoming. We always feel like we could hang out and train there all day and my boys wish they could have class everyday of the week. The coaches are awesome, patient, respectful, kind, really cool and phenomenal teaches. My boys absolutely love being there, learning and training. And Professor Ben Baxter makes you feel like you can do anything. I definitely recommend this Academy for beginners and very experienced people of all ages. They also offer judo! :D read more
