I started training here a year ago, with no athletic background at all. I was hoping for a friendly environment and good instruction, but 10th Planet Springfield surpassed all of my expectations. It might sound stupid, but the second day I came I was surprised to discover that Mike already remembered my name, and was glad to see me. I felt instantly welcome. It's little things like that which really set this gym apart. The environment is amazingly positive, and even complete newbies like me are made to feel totally at home. The level of instruction is extremely high. Mike doesn't hand out belts very often, and when he does, it's because someone has really earned it. The blue belts are amazingly skilled and athletic, but they're all so sweet and friendly that even as they are constantly submitting me I still have a great time. I've been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for about two years now. Both gi and no-gi. I made it a point to train at most of the BJJ schools in the area and they all have something good to offer. Mike Dewitt is one of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu's best competitors. He is a super friendly guy and he knows his stuff well. He is a world champion and one of the quickest guys to achieve black belt in the 10th Planet System (not an easy feat). If you want black belt level nogi Jiu Jitsu training this is the place to be. We got her signed up for the kids class and in the 4 months she's been going to the classes, we have not only seen her learn how to defend herself and make new friends, but also have seen her confidence grow, as well. Man there is so much to say about 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Springfield. Mike Dewitt is an awesome instructor, his academy is amazing, good mat space and super clean. Mike himself is the nicest guy you could meet to go along with his top notch instruction. I personally make it a point to drive 2 hrs a at least 3x a month if not more just to get in even a half hour of training. Mike DeWitt wears really great spats, and I felt very welcome when I train there in spats. It is hard to find a place so welcoming to spat-wearers, much less a black belt who looks as good as Mike in spats. I am a big fan of his scramble urban camo spats. And his beard. Overall great place to train. Mats are great, free cold water is a big plus, but not as important as their spat-tolerance. read more

My fourth grade son used to go here. Everything was good until they allowed a 7th grader with experience do a read naked choke on my son which physically messed his throat, which he still has pain from. It scared the hell out of my son and he wanted to quit after that. The 7th grader was a little prick who was purposely trying to hurt my son and the instructors did nothing. Mike is a black belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu which is quite an accomplishment. I believe their are fewer than 20 in the entire world. He is an accomplished competitor and great instructor.
