I felt like the portions were large, but the flavor just wasn't great this time. I normally love everything cookie butter, so I was excited to see this on their menu, but I was left searching for the flavor. It just tasted like vanilla ice cream with an occasional tiny hint of cookie butter. I wish there was a lot more cookie butter flavor. I had the same experience with the cookie dough. The flavor needed to be stronger, but I did enjoy the little bits of cookie dough. The only ice cream my husband and I ordered that had a lot of flavor was the honey comb. I tasted honey in every bite and it was delicious! I wish all of their ice creams had this much flavor. read more

I tried Thurgood Creamery recently with some friends. The overall consensus was not great. I didn't mind my ice cream, I ordered the pistachio ice cream. I thought it tasted good with a fair amount of actual pistachios in the ice cream. Two people in our group ordered the cookies and cream ice cream. They did not like it at all. Said it tasted oily to them. Another friend in our group ordered the cookie monster & said it also tasted oily. They had a lot of different flavors. I'm not sure what the chance of two different ice creams both tasting oily was. Our group said they wouldn't be back overall. The line was really long when we got there but I felt like it went quickly. Seemed like a very popular place. I thought the prices vs portions were just okay. We were headed back towards Layton on Antelope Avenue when we opted to stop for Ice Cream. Thurgood Creamery is located at the western edge of a large shopping plaza. They appeared to have some outdoor / picnic tables set up under some canopies, but we opted to dine inside as it was a hot day. I got a small, though they apparently will sell the "child's cup" to adults. I would have gotten that instead, as it was sized more to my appetite. Even the small seemed like a fairly large portion. I got some local variant "I-15 pothole" or some such - a take on Rocky Road. It was good. My wife and daughter got other flavors and enjoyed them as well. They also offered complimentary water, which was nice due to the heat and to wash down the ice cream. For a place that claims it's attempting to be the best creamery in UT, I was expecting it to be a whole lot better but it's just sub mid. All the flavors we tried tasted similarly and were bland with a weird after taste. They're expensive but serve huge portions. Finally gave this place a try! They are located right by the movie theater and down the street from the temple. A great location for an icecream shop. Plus the Thurgood name is an old name for this area so it's a name a lot of people know. Good thinking on their part! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The store is cute and even though it is small they have a good amount of indoor and even outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The lines get long but they have three employees taking orders at the same time so it goes by fast. They allow samples as well, so you can try the flavor before you order. Since it is homemade icecream the flavors are strong. The chocolate is a very dark chocolate flavor and the honeycomb has a lot of real honey in it. Might be too strong for kids but as an adult I appreciate the real flavors. I should have trusted the reviews that rated this place in the lower end. I got the cookies and cream and honestly it tastes like room temperature butter with cookies in it. Bad after taste. Thick film stuck in my mouth. My wife got the raspberry cheesecake which is admittedly much better but still not great as far as ice cream goes. Staff was friendly. The Thurgood name has been around Syracuse long before my time (51 years). Everyone in Utah loves Ice cream, so you're destined to be a hit when you combine the two. However, my experience at their creamery was "it's ok." It just opened and there was a long line and lots of families. The seating was limited. The decor was cute. They have 15-20 flavors to choose from. But once I bit into my chocolate cream, I was disappointed. The word that best describe it was "CHALKY" It has nothing on Eddy's or Dryers, except for a good waffle cone. It's a new business and I'm sure they'll morf and change things up over time. Definitely worth a try, and I'm a big believer in supporting small businesses. I 'lol try it again next year and let you know if they got any better or worse. read more

I'm visiting from out of town. I'm very particular about my ice cream always searching for places that prioritize fresh and "homemade" something that's impossible to find these days. I guess you have to drive out of state to find these kinds of locations. Well, Thurgood did not disappoint. The vanilla and chocolate flavors were exceptional. The soft and rich textures reminded me of the deliciousness of Italian gelatos. I ordered the flavors on a waffle. Others in my party ordered the ice cream nachos. In addition to the ice cream, they have shakes which I plan to try next time I'm in town. Last but not least, the people. They were patient while we sampled flavors a super important part of a "mom and pop" establishment. This makes such a difference and why I'm coming back and highly recommending this establishment. I waited to give my review until after it had been open over a month and I had been there a few times and tried a few flavors including my favorite Rocky Road which I thought no one could possibly mess up until I went to Thurgood, who adds sliced almonds? Really? After having Rocky Road with sliced almonds I will never be back, I could deal with the lackluster taste of the coconut dairy free ice cream but the last straw was the almonds. One positive thing is the staff is very friendly and they are very quick at getting through the long lines. I can't really tell you of one flavor that stood out my husband said the Blueberry was really good but nothing compares to other creameries we have been to in Utah especially one down in St George we found by accident that is the best ever. read more

We went here the weekend they were open so it was very busy - as to be expected. The people were all very nice, you could tell they were doing their absolute best and they rocked it! The decor was cute. The seating will be nice and reasonable once the newness of it all dies down. I really hope they figure out how to put their flavors on the wall behind the cash register so you can read them while waiting. The current placement when you walk in the door on a small sign is only nice if you have time to stand there. And the space on the wall to the left of everything is hard to read as it isn't in front of you enough, especially when busy. The ice cream was... good... our daughters was pretty good. She really liked it. My husband and I got the vegan flavors. I wish I would have known before hand that all their vegan bases were coconut. Neither of us are fans of coconut. I hope they try some with almond milk or something a little more creamy and less powerful. We both had 2 scoops of different flavors and the. IG get not of all was coconut. read more
