I was at a training down the street so popped into grab a quick lunch. I haven't been to any Thundercloud in quite some time. My sandwich specialist was pleasant. I got my go to sandwich a "veggie delite with hummus". It tasted the exact same as it always does. The bread is fresh and the ingredients were as well. I guess why I'm giving this only four stars is the price. I ordered a small sandwich; just the sandwich -no chips or drink and it came out to be like 7 bucks. I know things have changed since Covid and food overall is more expensive now but that seems high to me. I'm glad I didn't get a chips or drink! Maybe it's just me and my teacher salary that can't afford to eat out as much anymore. :( read more

Avoid this location and service !! Short bald head dude with glasses does not have the capacity to comprehend how rude and unpleasant his service is . I came to get a sandwich and as I'm waiting in line looking at the menu the customer infront of me walked away putting me next in line. I see the old man is still occupied and so I'm still looking at the menu as I'm waiting in line I over hear mumbling coming from him he doesn't have the capacity to speak up and tell me to move forward so he continues to speak lightly and finally I have the chance to hear him and asks if am I ready . I noticed how lightly he was talking so I start talking the same way as he is to me nothing wrong with that right ? No he then signals his hand to his ear as he can't hear me then uses his finger to tell me to move closer . Disrespectful and unprofessional. As I do he proceeds to ask me for my order, I've been there many times and know they get their bread first I tell him I would like a small sub sandwich in white bread but oh he can't hear me well I'm speaking to him the same way he speaks so now he understands the problem when he receives the same energy back . He then asks again what type of sandwich as I tell him my order with only having the chance to say 2 ingredients he rudely walks away!! Why ask my order if your going to walk away and mumble as your leaving "so turkey sandwich then" . I then started confronting him and telling him how rudely and unprofessional he is, and he had no care in the world he has no awareness of his rude actions and should not be working in a customer service environment if he provides unpleasant service . Then after speaking to a manager the old man told his side of the story and said I went into the location rudely and his coworkers also sided with him bc I raised my voice and spoke up abt his actions when I would've never got out of character if there wasn't a reason to . I wasn't even in a hurry in fact wanted to eat there but after that experience I left in a rush to cry in my car . If this is your daughter or wife coming into this location only for a 70 year old man who doesn't know how to provide customer service be working in this location and having them go through this same experience I would recommend not going!! And if something does happen feel free to take matters into your own hands as the manager proceeded to tell my bf he can come back right now and take matters into his own hands just shows to show what kind of manager allows the kind of people working here . The only way to do a fantastic sandwich in this city is going to Thundercloud Subs as there is a large variety of hot and cold subs you can get here including soups and salads too. I just tried a new menu item, the Lady Bird, and boy was I super happy about it too! Chicken salad was super fresh and the jalapenos in this sub was popping! This location is one of our favorites as there is always friendly, fast, and safe service! Online ordering is always on point and on time! Parking is super easy here too as you can park right in front of the storefront or along the other businesses in this shopping center. Be sure to tip the staff as well as they are slinging these subs on time every time! Also do note that this location does accept the coupons from the Community Impact newspaper. Be sure to clip that as it is a sweet deal of buy one sandwich get one free! It is definitely a deal saver and allows you to move that money you saved into their tip jars! read more

If you aren't happy with your service, there's a Randall's across the street, you can buy the ingredients for triple the price and make something to your satisfaction. Some people get angry because the sandwich makers don't have gloves, and handle money. I've watched and it's clear that they're instructed to wash hands after handling the cash. Of course, I'm sure there are time when they're in a hurry and forget. So, I can see why some people would be angry. Let me start by stating how much i like thundercloud subs but will probably never eat at this location again. This place just feels dirty as well as i have seen multiple instances of very poor hygiene as well as standards at which the place is kept. On this visit alone (i will leave out the other bad visits) my helper had gloves on, left to do a task, clean something, move things around, came back, blew his nose, washed his hands (with gloves on) and then made my sandwich. And and before he made my sandwich, he kept touching other things besides food related items. Seemingly nice people, poorly trained, poor standards and poor quality of food. Moved to Austin 6 months ago and finally tried TC subs. Wow why did I wait so long?! Nothing like your typical chain sandwich shop, the employees are personable and make conversation. Laughter and treat you like a person not just a customer. Not a fan of the subs with guacamole, but live and learn, I loved the Italian with thunder sauce and sweet peppers. I'll be back. I love thundercloud. Absolutely fantastic sandwiches for a reasonable cost. I got a large California club for about $6 and was surprised with how tasty their subs were. They also frequently feature daily specials that sometimes puts good sandwiches on sale for just a couple dollars. I've seen in other reviews that some people had problems with the service, but in my experience the employees were super friendly and efficient. They make the subs in front of you so you have a good amount of specialization as well. I'd recommend using wheat bread and thunder sauce because those things make the sandwich taste amazing. read more

I really do love their subs. The Austin Club has always been my favorite. But my experience with this location was not all too good. I placed an order online for a curbside pick up. I showed up at the pick up time (7:28 pm) on a Sunday. I called to let them know I was there and they said they would bring it out. It appeared that the employees were already cleaning up the store .... The employee came out to tell me they couldn't find my order, i said I did already place this online and pre paid for it. He went back inside to look for it, he came out with it 3 minutes later. I ordered a drink with it but the empty cup was in the bag. I asked why they gave me an empty cup and if I can fill it since I PAID for it but I was told they were closing. Even though I paid for a fountain drink. Not too thrilled with that at all. Not sure how I haven't reviewed this thundercloud yet! I've been coming here for years and years. This Thundercloud is what I'd consider their flagship. I'm pretty sure it's also their largest location. The staff is quick on processing orders, friendly and personable. The food is always of good quality and I've never had any issues with accuracy of order or bad items. The establishment is clean and nicely lit. I have no complaints and use this as my standards for all other thundercloud locations. read more

OK, this review is going to contain opinion from a germaphobe. Everyone always raved about Thundercloud Sub when I first moved to town, so I stopped by this location one day for lunch in 2008. I got the veggie sub, and I remember thinking it tasted like the way a trashcan smells. So I wrote off Thundercloud until yesterday when I thought I'd give it another go. As I walked up to the chaotic counter, I noticed something immediately, none of the sandwich makers were wearing gloves. "OK, you can deal with this," I said to myself "they have to wash their hands...". Then I noticed my sandwich maker was wearing cloth/other natural fiber bracelets (aka cesspool for germs!) which were resting on the preparing surface. Once again I had to talk myself into continuing to order, I didn't want to embarrass my friend. Once our sandwiches were made by our ultra friendly maker, she proceeded to ask our method of payment. This ran chills down my germaphobe spine. The non-gloved sandwich makers also handle money? I'm glad I didn't know this sooner, I would have been watching like a hawk for hand washing. All I noticed was the sandwich maker next to us bring back a credit card and pen (yes, communal pen), hand it to the customer and continue making a sandwich, without washing her hands. That was enough to make me never come back. It makes me sad too, because the food was a major improvement over last time. I tried the nada chicken sandwich, and it was hearty and filling. And the service was really cheerful. There are just some things a germaphobe can't look past. But they're obviously not hurting for business, so one lost customer isn't bad, right? read more

There was a time when I would have heated debates about Thundercloud Subs based on ONE experience I had when I was 18. A smelly hippie with a sleeveless shirt and hairy armpits made my sandwhich and from then on I was a forever scorned woman. I would call people "crazy!" and "insane!" for loving Thundercloud Subs. I tried it again 10 years later near my place of employment on Bee Caves Rd and I must say that I was WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! all those years. I wish I could get back those 10 yrs of wasted quiznos and subway eating. This one has changed my view. The people who work there are way too hip for me. They are all very pleasant and fast. Don't mistake fast for messy work. They are good at sandwich making and they do it with style. My lunchtime is healthy and fun again. read more

I've already written a (glowing) review for a different Thundercloud and this location is equally as awesome in my book! One particular sandwich maker stands out in my book... the bald guy with black-rimmed glasses. He can make one killer sandwich! The other sandwich builders are awesome as well, but this guy REALLY knows his ratios and has produced the BEST Thundercloud sandwiches I have ever had. Kudos to him! Pro tip: the place can get pretty slammed at lunch time (as do most places in this shopping center) but if you get in before 12 or after 12:30, you shouldn't have much of a wait. I usually kill some time in Stein Mart before walking across the parking lot to Thundercloud so I don't have to spend so much time waiting in line. read more

I have mixed feelings about this Thundercloud, but I'm going to give them 4 stars based on the consistency of the food, and their good staff. The bad: The first two times I tried this place, I had to wait in a (long) line with perfectly manicured Westlake Wives and their perfect(ly annoying) children, enduring their whining about how tired they were having just flown in from Europe the night before, etc. etc. Now, admittedly, I'm jealous of their money, which is probably part of my annoyance, but I'm not jealous of their living in a gated community or driving those ugly, over-priced, monstrous luxury SUVs, I could find better things to spend money on. The good: However, even though the lunch rush was in full effect, the restaurant was staffed accordingly. The folks working there were efficient and the line moved fast. Despite the efficiency, the people making my sandwich were still friendly and polite, I didn't feel like they were rushing me. More bad: I can't seem to get their online ordering to work. The first time, it failed because the online service tries to send a fax, and the fax was busy. The email that I received with a link to try again had a broken link. The second time, a week later, it informed me that it was too late to order online. More good: Now that I've started calling in my orders, I don't have to wait in line. They always have my food ready. One time I called on a Monday, and the guy taking my order hesitantly mentioned that it might take (*gasp*) 15 minutes to make my food, and was that okay? Uh, yeah, that's fine, it's going to take me 15 minutes to get there, have you driven on Bee Cave during lunch? This got a relieved chuckle from him. They don't keep a tip jar near the pick up counter, which is interesting, since they still have to make the sandwich for me, and I don't mind tipping at this place. One time when I picked up my order, the counter guy reminded me not to forget my napkins. This was actually helpful, since I always do forget to grab a napkin, but it did leave me wondering if I had dribbled breakfast on my shirt or something. On my very first day of work, I decided to treat myself to lunch. Having only been in Austin a month at the time, I knew little about my immediate surroundings. However, word travels fast in this proud city and I had heard a thing or two about Thundercloud Subs. Lucky for me, there's a Bee Caves location in the expanding Thundercloud family. I was my usual difficult self and decided to build-my-own sub. The man was friendly and patient, despite a huge line (this location is a popular lunch spot for businesswomen & men). He built my sub as requested and I was anxious to dig in. Maybe it was because I wasn't thrilled about the $7 tab, or maybe it was because my expectations were too high, but I wasn't overly impressed with this popular spot. My bread was soggy (bread support is big for me) and my cheese was stale. Plus, the subs aren't big enough. Thundercloud is Austin tradition. It seems that many consider it a once-a-week staple to their diet. They are active community members and have been around for over 30 years. They have daily specials, decent prices and convenient locations. But when you get right down to it...to the actual product itself....I cannot award more than three stars. I loves me some Thundercloud! I usually rock this locale but I've been going to their various locations for years on end and you can almost always expect it to be just as awesome at any of 'em. Their subs are really amazing. My favorites are their chicken salad (they make it fresh daily! And it's crazy delicious), egg salad, turkey, and nada chicken (a veggie pho-chicken patty, some people don't like it but I'm a fan). Really though, I couldn't imagine any of their subs not being great. I feel spoiled and feel that Lenny's, Subway, Quizno's, Jimmy Johns, etc. all pale in comparison. Not really related to their food but they have the best radio ads too! My favorite was from several years back that went, "Like a day in the park, when the music is right. Or hittin' the trail and riding yo bike. We're a home grown part of what you love about Austin, we're Thundercloud, Thundercloud Subs! THUNDERCLOUD SUBSSSSSS!" Twas the best and so accurate! I love T-CLOUD! I LOVE T-CLOUD! I can eat it every day. Seriously. I would put the Westlake Thundercloud up against any in town. It's amazingly efficient. Even when I walk in to find a line during the lunch rush--I'm confident that I'll be out in 25 mins flat. (That's with a soda refill). I usually go for a small chicken salad on wheat. I sub spicy mustard for the regular yellow kind, and add provolone. Light on the onions, heavy on the thunder sauce and pepper. They have Ms. Vicker's Jalepeno chips, so I'm set. They keep the place tidy even though it's always poppin'. When I feel like mixing it up, the Office Special/Egg Salad is pretty dang yummy. For a heartier choice, Roast Beef & Avocado is my jam. I always ask them to go a little light on the avocado--they can get a little carried away. The staff is friendly (I always hope for the legend or the bald guy with glasses--He is the most skilled of the bunch) and there is plenty of seating. Of the staple Austin sandwich restaurants, Thundercloud is my favorite. The Westlake location is my home, so I always go there. The 9" large is the perfect size, the bread is better than Subway, and the ingredients are always fresh. I always get either the NY Italian or the Mesquite Chicken on wheat. Highly recommended, no matter which location. The Westlake one recently got renovated, and I have to say, I'm not a fan. The new, clean, Austin-chic does not jive with the old grungy feel of the place. read more

As soon as we entered the place on a Saturday afternoon, there was a huge milk puddle that had not been cleaned, and there was no sign. There was a large group of workers and worker's friends who were sitting in the booths being loud and the employees didn't get to work until we walked in. Some of the friends, who probably didn't work there, walked in and out of the back, and it was super sketchy. My boyfriend went in before me while I got something out of the car. He had never been to a Thundercloud before and told the guy behind the counter that. Instead of explaining the process he just stared at him awkwardly. The guy that helped us seemed to be extremely HIGH! He's eyes were red and puffy, he was extremely slow moving, rude, and he asked us questions about our sandwiches multiple times. He did not ask us about what we wanted on our sandwiches in an effort to move the process, and when asked about bread or cheese offerings he was annoyed and short. He was very slow making the sandwiches and used very little of each ingredient. From a sanitation note, it was very odd that we wore one glove instead of two. The cleanliness of his hands was questionable at best. Halfway through the process, we considered walking out, but we felt bad about wasting food. Once he had almost finished the sandwiches we noticed a man's wallet sitting on the counter and I turned it into the other guy working because he seemed to be sober. While ringing up the order the High guy "helping" us seemed confused about how to use the cash register. After a moment he returned and said we didn't have to pay for it... We went ahead and took the sandwiches because we thought asking to pay for them would have made this already awful experience worse. We think he may have been too high to function. This was a very sad experience at Thundercloud. I like their sandwiches, and other locations seem to be quicker and friendlier. I will not let this experience define my opinion of Thundercloud as a whole, but I will never return to this location. read more

1st time I had Thunder I wasn't wowed. Somehow this place grew on me. Slowly, but surely, I came out of the woodwork and jumped on the Thunder train. It must have been the thunder sauce and the avocado spread that did me in. Yep, I think those 2 items are key. Add in the Elvis shake and I was SOLD. The bald, stocky, hip looking dude, with the huge, thick black frames, tinted lenses and cut off Thunder t-shirt is my favorite sandwich maker. He seems like he's too cool for school and somewhat tough guyish, but is actually very nice by sandwich making server standards. He loads on the avocado and all the fixins' and has never left my stomach grumblin'. Look for him next time you go.. Btw, I just realized I may have described a majority of what the workers there look like, but this location has never disappointed. Went in today, not very crowded so I went right up to the counter and ordered my sandwich. I SPECIFICLY asked for the BACON to be heated up because I wasnt a fan of cold, soggy, and chewy bacon, so what happen when I turned my head for a second to pick out my chips? He has THE ENTIRE SANDWICH IN THE MICROWAVE! I try to go to the back, and he is already returning with my sandwich, when I said that I just wanted the BACON heated up, he goes "Oh, well 3 dollars and blah blah blah is your change. Have a nice day." I say "Can you please remake it?" To which he replied "Yea I can remake it, but I will charge you for 2 sandwhiches." Umm wow... Never again.
